Ran 4 easy miles total. Started with 2 warm-up miles, then ran about 800 meters at threshold pace to get my lungs loosened up (I can be prone to asthma). Unfortunately by 800 meters end I was breathing heavy, and it took about 5 minutes for it calm down, so the asthma was there. Instead of being disappointed, I actually like it when the asthma hits, because I am basically required to work at about 75% of my normal lung capacity. It is like altitude training without the mountains. So, I stretched a bit, and then decided to run 6 X 150 meter strides, 2 easy, 2 medium, and 2 hard. I ran it on the 7th fairway at the Urbana Country club - nice soft surface, no bumps. I ran the strides pretty good, I was surprised that my lungs recovered and did not give me too much of a problem. Rest period between strides was about 60 seconds. After the last hard 150 I kept running, and did 2 more easy miles to round out the session. I then stretched and did my normal strength exercises - dips, push-ups, pull-ups, calf raises. Then walked 40 minutes home.

Welcome to the blog Will! Looks like your current level and goals are very much in line with mine and a lot of other runners on the blog. I think you'll find the blog to be a huge help in reaching your goals.

No Way!! There's a trail marathon on Grand Island?! That's incredible. How was it? Do they do it every july?? [i'm a michigan boy...]

Welcome to the blog! Now I am going to be your mother for a moment... Please go to a dr and get that asthma under control. The part of asthma you see and feel is the tip of the iceburg, i.e. there is much more going on under the surface that you don't see and feel. It is very dangerous (it can kill you) even though you like the "training" effect. I can promise you as someone who ran for years as you described above until I almost scared my husband to death (blue lips and fingernail beds) that I finally got Advair and got it under control. My runnning got amazingly better when I was able to breath. Ok, I'm done nagging you. Really, welcome to the blog. It is a great community of runners.

Tom - looks like we are trying for the same 5k goal - let's get it done by next summer!

Dutch - Yes, the marathon is on Grand Island, the runners ferry to it from Munising, and they will be holding it next July, 300 max runners. Google Grand Island Marathon and visit the website for more information.

Lulu - thanks for the concern. Asthma first hit me about 4 years ago. I took up running to help it, and it seems to work pretty well. The more I run, the less it bothers me. Plus, it is seasonal for now, I only seem to have it from August-October. Soon it will disappear until next year....
