What a nice day for a race. The weather wasn't bad the company of fast blogger runners was great. First off I wanted to thank Paul and his wife for allowing me to stay at their house it was a blessing. Also meeting Sasha, Steve, Cody, Jon, James, Logan, and Paul was a treat.

Sasha, Paul, and I all got up at 4:45, although I have to admit I was up at 4:00. I was so excited to run for some reason. Sasha was too, he was ready to box, and lucky for me I wasn't near him. Although, he might not have the body like Roy Jones he could out run him.

My initial intent for this race was to be somewhere under 2:50, since I really didn't want to push too hard after running a marathon two weeks ago. I made this decision during our warm-up before the race.

I felt really good in the race. I decided I would try to average between a 6:15 and 6:20 pace and that plan was a success.

I ran with Cody almost the whole race, and we had a good conversation going. Cody is an awesome guy. At the half-way point Cody and I checked in around 1:22, and I figured that under 2:50 was in the bag. I just didn't know by how much. I really did hold back quite a bit, but that's okay because St. George is coming. For a little bit Cody and I traded taking the pace, and that worked well. At Mile 18 I held back a little to go up the hill, and I feel now maybe that wasn't such a good idea. (mile 18 6:24, Mile 19 6:28 and Mile 20 6:39). I really felt strong until Mile 25 or 24 where I made a wrong turn and Cody yelled at me and got me going in the right direction. Who knows where I would have ended up, because the Cop patrolling the street wasn't paying attention and never saw me turn the wrong direction. If it wasn't for Cody yelling at me I would have ran a lot further today. But that stop and turn around kind of broke my pace and I felt some fatigue set in (Last two miles 6:31, and 6:31). It was good to see the finish line knowing that I broke 2:50.

My fuel strategy was about the same in this race like all the others. I drank water at almost all the aid stations and had a gel at mile 11, and mile 17. I think though it might have been a good idea to take another gel at mile 21 just to experiment what affect it would have.

Overall, I felt I could have ran faster but saving some for St. George I think was a better strategy for me.

For me the best part of this whole race/trip was meeting and talking to all the fast runner bloggers. I really feel I've gained some good friends.

Kory,

Great job yesterday. You ran a very smart and controlled race and it looks like you never really hit that much of a wall. You and Cody should definetely plan on grouping up again at St. George and going for a sub 2:40 together. I am still trying to figure out what I should run but I am looking for at least a sub 2:40 as well. Again, great race and a new PR your long term goal of sub 2:40 is well within reach this year and after St. George you will have to look at a new long term goal.

From Superfly on Sun, Sep 16, 2007 at 10:27:25

Good job Kory. Way to keep working hard and seeing PR's every race. Hope you heal fast and get the legs ready for STGM.

From Cody on Sun, Sep 16, 2007 at 11:08:41

Kory -

It was an honor to run with you and help each other out. There is no way I would have ran as well without you there to push me. You are an animal and will run great at SGM. By the way, I didn't do you any favors telling you that you are going the wrong way. If you had continued 2 blocks you would have been at the finish. Your race would've been over at 24.6 miles. I couldn't have you beating me, right?

Kory,

Congrats in another PR! I hope you recover well from this one and feel up to another hard effort at St. George. Seems a sub-2:45 is very possible!

From Paul Petersen on Sun, Sep 16, 2007 at 11:43:57

Great job Kory! I enjoyed meeting you and getting to know this weekend.

Ted: I feel 2:40 and under is there. I just need to keep fit till St. George. Anyone have advice for training for the next three weeks. Of course I'll take it easy for the next few days. I plan on running rolling hills to get ready for St. George.

Cody: We really did work well together, you also helped me in a big way too. I'm glad I kept you motivated and you didn't wait for St. George to break under 2:50. It's kind of special we could do it together. Like I said your a great guy.

John K. St. George will be run and if I can get under 2:40 that would be great... will see.

Great race, You are steadily making progress. As far as the gel at 21 is concerned, it would have helped a little but taking sports drink would have helped sooner and made a bigger impact on your blood sugar level.

Kory,

As far as training between now and St. George here are some thoughts:

I would just focus on recovery this week. Let the body dictate your running but even if things feel ok do not push it this week. Probably 40 miles or so with a 10-13 mile easy run on Saturday if you feel good by the end of the week.

The following week about 60 miles would be good based on your previous mileage but again you need to play it by feel. If all feels ok then maybe include a 3 mile tempo on Tuesday at 1/2 marathon effort(5:45) and something like 3x1600 at 5-10k pace(5:30) on Thursday. Then finish off with no more than 13 easy miles on Saturday.

The final week look at about 30 miles in the 5 days prior to St. George with 2-3 miles at marathon pace (6:00) on Tuesday. Everything else easy this week with miles decreasing all week.

As far as rolling hills or down hill work I think you have done plenty so not much is needed. I would stay mostly flat all this week and if you feel fully recovered then you can include some the following week but return to flat the last week.

Well, just my thoughts, I hope it helps.

Nice race, Kory. Rest lots, then train hard, and hopefully you and Cody can beat my TOU time!

From wheakory on Mon, Sep 17, 2007 at 18:18:08

jtshad: thanks! this week I'll run easy. Wish I had more time.

Jon: Thanks! You did an awesome job of accomplishing your goal. I hope 2:39 is in the reach for me in three weeks. Good Job again.
