Today I did a seven mile tempo run.  I felt really good and probably the fastest tempo run for the start of this year.  I wanted to see how my body would handle a marathon pace mile after the tempo run instead of dropping down to a cool-down mile.   I felt fine and could have continued with the marathon pace miles.  Good training day leading towards Boston.  Overall totals  10.4 miles  at a 6:20 pace in 1:06.

The course is the same course I've done all my tempo runs, mostly flat with one small uphill and downhill.  There was a strong head wind at mile 7 that I really and to push through at 25 mph.

Mile 1: 7:24 (warm-up)
Mile 2: 5:59 (start tempo)
Mile 3: 5:53
Mile 4  5:52
Mile 5  6:00
Mile 6  6:03
Mile 7  6:07
Mile 8  6:05
Mile 9  6:32 (marathon pace mile)
Mile 10 6:50 (should have cool-down slower than this, but wasn't focusing on the cool-down I guess)

Very good workout. You nearly PRed in the first 4 miles and then kept on going. Was the slow down caused by the headwind, fatigue, or just easing off on the effort?

This run shows your marathon pace is much faster than 6:30 (and it should be with your training and natural speed). I'll have more comments after your 12 mile tempo, but for now, I think it would be safe to say you are very safe going out at 6:15 pace in Boston. True marathon pace when you are fit can be quite scary especially for someone without a lot of natural speed. It is for me. I go through the first mile, and had I not done it before I would be panicking at the thought of having to run all 26 like that.

The headwind really made me work hard, so I think it was the wind and fatigue trying to push through it.

At mile 7 its quite an open area outside Pocatello, and it seems the wind always blows towards me on this mile.

Dropping to the 6:30 pace felt good, but who knows how many I could have done at that pace after pushing the tempo pace hard.

Nice work!
