Today I ran the Teton Dam Marathon and it was a race to remember for bad reasons. Going into a race you of course want to feel like your fitness feels good and your health is good. Unfortunately, in this one I couldn't get over my cold and sinus issues. More on that later. I first arrived in Rexburg, and picked up my race pack and toured the city. I've actually never been here before, and the funny thing is I only live 70 miles away. The city is very easy to get around, and I found where I needed to be on Saturday morning. I went to the potato bake dinner the night before on the free marathon meal which I've never eaten a potato before a marathon. I met a lot of nice marathoner's.

Race morning I woke up with a terrible headache, sinus drainage, and coughing, which I thought my antibiotics would take care of, well not a chance. I met Clyde and Jeff at the pick up area, and what great guys they are and incredible runners I hope to be at their running level someday.

As we started the race I really felt like I was in a groove except I had a hard time breathing, because it seemed like I was coughing every minute the whole way. The first half I finished in 1:22 something and I really felt good other than the coughing. But on mile 16 my stomach felt awful really hurting bad, because I needed to go to the bathroom bad. I asked the aid station when was the next porta putty and they said "we don't know, very encouraging (they also didn't hand me water correctly at two aid station in a row, where I didn't drink any water for, 4 miles . Well I started the hills on mile 16 and my stomach felt terrible. Half way in mile 18 I went off course and ran behind this grain facility and had to "Brown Code". I looked at my watch to see how much time I wasted doing this and it ended up being close to 3 minutes ( you can see that below in the pacing chart). The worst part I had to find some grass and you can guess the rest. I felt really great after this except the course elevation chart online is inaccurate and there's more hills than the map details. Clyde mentions this too in his race report. This was disappointing when your try to figure your pacing strategy. I started cruising down mile 20 and turned the corner and there was another hill that I wasn't excepting. It slowed me down and the rolling hills began.

Then after mile 21 I developed a really bad side stitch that didn't go away until the end of the race. Every time I would try to speed up it would just kill and I had to slow down and I had to alter my stride (this has never happened to me before and the only thing I can contribute it to is probably all the coughing I did just jolting my insides so much). The last mile my side hurt so bad I felt like I was crawling, and finally the finish (2:59:32).

I'm really disappointed how the second half went, and I can only contribute it to I wasn't feeling well enough to run this race, and my immune system broke down. After the race I ran to the restroom six times with a stomach ache and did a "code brown" each time. My stomach was killing. Finally about an hour and a half later there was nothing left in my body to go to the bathroom. I drank plenty of water during the race... I just think my immune system broke down. But no excuse I should have toughed it out and tried to run hard in the ending miles.

I talked with both Clyde and Jeff after the race, and stayed to support them getting their medals.

I don't know when I will run yet, but I know going into this marathon I really wasn't that focused on what I wanted to achieve with everything going on in my personal life. But 2:50 would have been nice, but it just wasn't there today.

I think I will do Des New Marathon on July 24. The downhill isn't really hard on my legs, and I ran this one last year and felt good. Then I will run Pocatello and TOU. But I think I'm going to take three days off to make sure I'm over this cough and my immune system is built back up.

The best part of the trip was meeting Jeff and Clyde they are great individuals and runners. Fast Blogs did a good showing today.

One thing I think I will work on in my running is more tempo miles in my long runs. This race has made me even more dedicated and I would seek any advice to become a better runner. I would also be interested in others diets before the marathon or leading up to it.

Good job on your race. I like sweet potatoes or Yams they are loaded with carbs.

From Dustin Ence on Sun, Jun 10, 2007 at 11:07:12

Good job finishing what sounded like a tough race. You're right about Clyde he's a nice guy and we've got a good running club down here in St. George. My training partners and the fastrunningblog has really helped me get back into running. I ran for Ricks for two years and one year at BYU, so I am pretty familiar with Rexburg, I was considering the marathon this year, but decided against it mainly because I didn't feel prepared enough. I hope your other marathons go good this summer, if you are even down in St. George look us up.

From Paul Petersen on Sun, Jun 10, 2007 at 11:22:39

Good job in a difficult race. It's the hard races that build toughness and character.

From wheakory on Sun, Jun 10, 2007 at 11:31:50

Thanks guys... Really it's frustrating knowing that my legs could do it but the rest of my body won't give me the chance. Having a side stitch while running was very weird that's never happened to me in a marathon. It was a strange feeling like your chest wanted to fall-out.

You guys are great and your running advice has really helped me and I know I will get faster and become stronger because of all I've learned. I'm running the TOU this year so I will be in Utah, but not in St. George. That reminds me I need to reserve a Hotel in Logan.

From Cody on Sun, Jun 10, 2007 at 11:53:38

Kory,

Who can complain about 3rd place? I admire your tenacity in fighting to the finish, even with health problems and intestinal issues. The marathon is a scary animal, but you still managed to break 3 hours on a difficult course and with all that was going on. I am impressed and I know that you will crush this time later this year.

From Paul Petersen on Sun, Jun 10, 2007 at 12:02:22

Hotel??! The Logan Chapter of the FastRunningBlog would be insulted if you wasted money at a hotel for TOU. You're welcome at my place if you want. I'm walking distance (5 blocks) from the busing area/finish line. We have an extra bed and an extra futon.

From Superfly on Sun, Jun 10, 2007 at 15:49:00

Good race Kory. A sub 3hour run on that course is very, very good. Keep the training up and you'll be doing some big things in the future. I think they totally shafted everyone with the awards. I don't understand how anyone who talkes 3rd place in a marathon does not get an award. Instead of throwing all those shirts out durning the awards they should have given them to some of us who placed in the marathon. Anyways thats too bad. Very good job.

From ArmyRunner on Sun, Jun 10, 2007 at 19:14:28

It sounds like you had a very tough day. I am impressed that you gutted it out and finished at all. You are right though you do have faster times in your legs and it will come this year. Just keep up the great trainng and high mileage and it will all come together on the right day. Way to hang in there and push through what sounds like one of the worst days you have had in a long time as far as your health was concerned.

From James on Sun, Jun 10, 2007 at 19:35:42

I second Paul, we have an extra bedroom that you or anyone else is welcome to for any Logan race. By the way, way to hang in there for a decent time and an excellent overall place.

From Superfly on Sun, Jun 10, 2007 at 23:59:41

Kory as far as the diet thing goes. If you want you can go back and read my blog from Monday October 9, 2006. I posted on there everything that I had eaten on the days prior to the race. This seemed to work pretty good for me and I've followed the same types of patterns in both Boston and Teton this year without any trouble.

From wheakory on Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 00:07:56

Wow! thanks for your welcoming your home to me. You guys are like family thank you and God Bless You. I wouldn't mind staying with you if it was only me, but my family might be coming too, and that would be a handful. But if it's just me I would sure accept. It's really not fun going to these alone and staying in the hotel by yourself. I've done this the last three marathon's and I get so homesick I call my wife 15 times.

About the race the one's that deserve a great performance is Clyde and Jeff. They had an outstanding performance over all those hills. Good job guys.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 11:27:18

Kory - good on job the race. It is amazing that you were still under 3:00 with all the problems. You have demonstrated a great measure of mental toughness.

Still near PR with a long bathroom stop. Marathon is a long race, and at least for me, the probability of having to stop is about 50%. Thus proper preparation becomes critical. With practice you can reduce the time loss to only a few seconds in the country side.

Also - I noticed you get colds and stomach problems quite often. You may want to analyze your diet and try to find some improvements. Possibly there are some nutrients you are not getting or maybe some foods that your body is getting weakened by.

I am sure that you'll be able to find a big place in Logan to bring your family to. The Logan chapter of the FastRunningBlog is fairly big, and the way things work in Utah, once you get about five people, if it is not of of them, among them you always have a brother or a cousin or a friend of a brother or cousin that has a nearly empty house just right where you need it.

Regarding DesNews - I would not recommend it if you plan to do well in the Top of Utah. It is not a fast course, and it beats up your legs pretty bad.

From jtshad on Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 11:34:55

Kory, great job Saturday, I wish you could have had a better experience without the intestinal issues. You still ran strong and came in under 3 hours on hard course. It was great seeing you again and I look forward to keeping in touch. Thanks for the kudo's, but you deserve lots of accolades as well running through the issues you had, the cold/flu from last week and the issues with your grandmother on your mind.

I agree with Clyde on the deficiency of the awards ceremony. Instead of the shirts and medals for 5K/10K finishers, they need to go three deep overall and in each division (this is the third year in a row that they have screwed up somehow in the awards). Thanks for the sticking around for the awards and sorry I didn't get to say goodbye before you left.
