Nice easy run today.   I did 7 with the wonder dog and 3 .3 after.  10.35 miles at a slow 7:29 pace in 1:17.  I really didn't want to get up this morning but I was out the door by 6:50am.  I did the run on a very flat course no hills or downhill at all.  The route was actually around our main streets in Pocatello (Yellowstone st., Alameda st., Poleline st., and Cedar st.)

Tomorrow I will do a long run again on the Pocatello Marathon course just like last week,  my plan is to really nail this course down.  I think I'm going to run the first 14 miles at a  6:50 to 7:20 pace than run the last 4 miles at a 6:30 pace.  My wife is a trooper because she has to come an d pick me up and then take me back to the top of the mountain (Crestview Rd.) to get my truck.  It's about a 10 to 15 minute drive from my house.

I have to work tonight at 9pm to put several security patches on our Solaris 10 and Linux Red Hat machines so I won't be able to get to bed until 11pm, and my plan is to be up by 5am.  Will see.

Nice week of mileage for you as well. Day off for me tomorrow.

When I run a 30 mile training run I really don't have a set pace in mind because it can change so dramatically depending on where I am. My long runs are on trails and the 30 mile I did last Sunday ranged from the start at 4500' to the turnaround at 9300', with about half of the miles above 8000'. There was also a climb of about 4500' in 4.5 miles as well. So the pace ranged from about a 10 minute pace at the beginning to probably a 25 minute pace going up the mountainside. To me, long runs like that are to be enjoyed. I do plenty of runs where I hammer it (hammer being a relative term in my case). If you're planning on running a 50 mile race, the main thing is time on your feet and a few long runs above 25 miles, just like having a few long runs above 20 miles for a marathon. A 50 mile race is run using a completely different mindset than a marathon, unless you're elite and doing the race on the roads. I did a 50 mile race back in Feb. on an average of 50 miles a week with a couple of long runs at 25 miles and felt pretty good at the end. With your marathon time, I would think you would do very well in a 50 miler. If you're thinking about a 50 miler on roads, there's one in October that would be a good first one, mostly flat, roads, with two climbs of roughly 1500' in 6 miles, the first at mile 1 and the last at mile 43. It starts in Mt. View, and goes around Pineview reservoir in the Ogden valley. Go to www.striders.net for info. Sorry for the long response. Good luck with your training.

Hey I don't mind long responses, because you always get more information. The Ogden Valley Run was the one I was thinking about doing. It's just all going to depend how I feel after running two marathon's in September.

Your a mountain goat, that's a heck of a climb and takes dedication, nice job on that run Sunday. Thanks for the information. I would just like to enjoy the first 50 miler and not really have a time goal. I'm used to a lot of uphill and downhill runs, but a mostly flat one for the first 50 miler would be good.

Have you considered doing the Bad Water Ultra? That looks brutal.
