Today was my tempo run day, and second speed work-out for the week.  I wasn't able to sleep last night until 3am, because our son kept getting up.  This is a new thing he's trying.  My wife and I read that two year olds will go through this stage.  With not getting much sleep I decided to change the run to a 4 mile tempo instead of a 7 mile tempo, because I was flat out tired when I woke up at 6am to run, and it gave me an excuse to be lazy.  But, for some reason I found the energy at mile 4 in the tempo run to decide to do the original 7 mile tempo (thank you Lord).  The wind wasn't a problem this morinng, and that was nice to have it not blasting in my face.

Total Miles 11.4  at a 6:19 pace in 1:12.

Mile 1   7:16  (warm-up)

Mile 2   5:58  (Start Tempo)

Mile 3   6:01

Mile 4  5:53

Mile 5  5:52

Mile 6  6:06  (got lazy)

Mile 7  5:57

Mile 8: 6:00 (end tempo)

Nice strong tempo workout.

Nice job on today's workout. In case you are interested, they just issued the Boston bib numbers. Looks like we are both in corral 3.

Thanks for letting me know. It's going to be exciting to see what happens.

You need to try and work your way up as far as possible before the start. You are in corral 3 bsed on 3:02 but will be running more like a corral 1 runner time wise. The further you can work your way up before the start the better. I know I saw some higher corral runners up in corral one when I was there. I'm not sure how they made there way up but they did. If not you will just have to realize that the first few miles may be slower than you want as you try and work your way through traffic. Either way you are ready to roll and I think you will run a very good time.

As far as shoes I prefer something light but also comfortable. The key is find something you are comfortable with and run a couple of 10-15 mile runs in them to make sure they feel good and are broken in.

The feeling of fatigue (as well as freshness) is often very deceptive. When you are training hard, you will often feel fatigued, but you are almost always strong. Very good workout. Another indicator that you are ready to run a fast time in Boston. One word of warning - you might be ready, but execution is not trivial. Things can go wrong and often do for somebody who is not a race road warrior and is racing away from home. Let's hope they won't, but if you do, humble yourself and just do your best. The most important thing is to run by how you feel from mile to mile rather than to think of any specific time goals.

From wheakory on Thu, Mar 22, 2007 at 12:33:25

I heard a lot of people say that about Boston because of the course layout that you should run each mile on how you feel.

I want to be under 3 hours more than anything, if I don't reach a 2:50 thats okay, because my main focus was to be under 3 hours and 2:50 was a long term goal for Boston.

When I ran Top of Utah last year I went by myself and was confident I would be under 3 hours. But the Friday morning before leaving I got really sick, I had the hot and cold chills, temperature above 100. But I was determined to run the marathon so I drove to Logan on Friday and my wife was really worried, because I was by myself. When I got there I got my packet and ate and headed to the Hotel and just slept the rest of the day. I woke up for the marathon and felt worse, runny nose, temperature but only 99, weak, but somehow I ran a 3:02. I know what you mean by your warning Sasha, sometimes things don't go the way you want them to, or you just don't have it for a particular race to accomplish your goals. One of my goals this year is to get a better time at the Top of Utah marathon.

Thanks for the advice.
