No warmup, the weather was cold. 6700' Elevation. This was an all trail race on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. About 1600 participants.  It was snowing and raining at the start and I lined up at the front. Sized up my competition and noticed most were wearing hydration packs. I have done the Bear Lake monster trail run before but never wore a pack for a half marathon. I started the race in second and watched the runner ahead of me. We got almost to mile 1 when his fast pace started slowing. Usually in a road race Im 5:15 pace this first mile but with the soft mud and elevation nearly 2000' higher than im used to I hit my first mile in 6:36.  My pace stayed around this for 4 miles.  Then it happened.  Thick mud from the rain and snowfall during the night. I was able to go faster in the rut however the rut had 3-4" inches of standing water. Which made it slick so I had the choice to run in thick mud or slick watered down mud.  It was a mess. The Second place guy and third place were about 20 seconds behind me constantly.  I think I had the advantage of bushwacking through the mud before other runners got to it. Mile 10 I seemed to not be able to shake number 2 off me. This point got into rocky terrain but downhill.  I knew the last mile would have the most up of all 13 so I pushed as hard as I could down the rocky trail and dusted the competition.  My 20 second lead turned to 5 full minutes in the last 3 miles.  He mustve fell or stopped for a pottit break.  The looped course came back into town where my mud finally disipated off my soles from reaching the main road in the last half mile.  Holy cow what an incredible course! I wished it was dryer but still happy for my first official trail race.  I won a free parks pass which I am giving away on the Run4fun Facebook post.  Go over and try and win it!  Oh by the way I did have our pace group and they had a hard day trying to pace through mud.  Most made it and I got to see Bart Yasso after the race and hang out with him. I gave him one of our Pace medals Vacation Races gives our pacers for helping out.  Fun day I love the grand canyon.
