I felt great going into this race very mentally prepared thanks to some pep talks with Christie. I think my pep talks to her for the Ironman returned to me 10 fold! Sometimes your advise to others helps when they return the favor on your event.  I slept on a couch at a friends house in Ogden pretty close to the start line and woke up with a very bad migraine.  I was up at 4:15 looking through his cupboards for Excederin and to my astonishment none of his cupboards had a trace of even ibuprophen! I later found out from him that his family was into herbal remedies.  I was with Bill my brother in law and we made it to the busses and a friend of mine, Danielle, who I was waiting for and knew got migraines a lot, so I called her to see if she had anything but all she brought up was Advil.  So up at the start line I took some because I was getting to the point of Nausea.  This was a mistake. Ibuprophen always seems to bug my stomach but I was desperate.  It started to rain about 30 minutes before the race start.  It was great to see friends up there and have a little fun even though we looked like a garbage liner convention.  I love pre race atmosphere! I made my way to the starting line and got in front of Tee, and Devra and Tara and talked to a few fast guys and wished a few good luck. Steve Anderson came up to me and pants me in front of a few of the elite group.  Always great times with steve at the starting line! At Top of Utah half I tried pushing him in the river that came up close to the side of the road.  I wished I had a pic of me and him at that moment when everyone is in serious mode squatted down like they are running a 400 meter dash holding their watches in preparation to start them.  Fun times with Steve.  Im plotting my next race antics for him when we meet again.  Paybacks! Ok So the race started and I really felt good. There were a group of 4 guys and they really werent going out that fast I thought so I ducked behind them with Justin Park.  Our first mile was 5:12 and I told Justin I thought I was going out to hard. But I think the first mile marker was off a bit because my watch turned at 5:28. So I settled into that pace and followed behind Justin for the first 3. I was hitting 5:38s on the dime! Justin was pulling away each mile about 100' each mile.  It rained continously on us but it really wasnt a factor to me.  Riley Cook started pulling away at this point and distanced himself about .25 mile in front of me.  He was by himself and the pack started breaking up into single file. I was in 6th position.  The race continued and I really love the scenery up there and my favorite part is when you run next to the horses for about a mile! They love running with you its so awesome! I chatted with them a bit encouraging them.  haha. I swear I heard one say go wilbur!  It was mile 9 so maybe I was starting to go delirious. hah. I made mile ten in 58 minutes and had a goal to hit it in 55 but didnt let it get me down. I kept running and used the half marathon point to help fuel me with the spectators that were there! Very supportive.  The dreaded hill at mile 14 hit and slowed me down. It was pouring at this point and I laughed as I saw thousands of garbage bags and rain parkas strung out along the road from the half marathon that started at this point.  I was having difficult seeing out of my right eye at this point and thought it was from the rain so Id keep wiping it as I ran but my vision was so blurred and seeing stars out of the corner of my eye as I always do with Migraines. I actually stopped at mile 15 asking the med table for some Excederin or bayer or anything like that. NOTHING! In fact they didnt know what to say to me. I told them I had a vicious migraine. They said there would be a better med table at mile 19. So I proceeded and made it to mile 16 when I was so nauseated I had to stop and puke.  I then got to running again and was passed by a few runners as I was trying to get my legs to go again.  I made it about .25 mile when I totally lost vision out of my right eye. I was all over the freaking road and couldnt run straight.  I stopped and help my head trying to get my bairings. I started to shuffle walk run again and Steve came up to me and as he grabbed me I started to fall a bit but he was a help. I tried to get running again but my head was spinning and I made it about 100 feet with him before I threw up again.  I walked for a bit again and made it to 17 and thats all I remember. I know I was pretty out of it and stumbling and freezing! I heard a vehicle approaching from behind me and I waved them down but they told me I didnt need to wave them down because I looked like a drunk man trying to run a marathon.  It was a med crew vehicle. They laid me in the back seat and took my blood pressure 120/80 which I dont know what that means. Then they took my temp and it registered at 92 degrees.  They were freaking out throwing blankets around me and a guy actually was laying on top of me trying to warm me up.  They called the Ambulance and it got there pretty quick.  I just wanted to be taken to the med tent at the bottom but they were trying to get me to get into the ambulance. I refused! So the Suv that picked me up drove me down and I was given something under my tounge which helped out a  lot! I wished I couldve gotten the name of it because My headache subsided and my nausea at the same time!  I have never been in bad shape like that.  I learned from this race that no matter what next time I have a migraine before a race, to either try to get rid of it or drop out.  Second I learned to listen to my body more and suck up my pride and stop in a race to get aid if my body is asking for it. Its not worth the mental and physical pain later.   I want to thank my friends for their support and a very big thanks to the Machine  for getting me  ready for this race and helping me.

Man, that is a war story... Sorry this marathon ended up this way. I'd freak out like those guys too if I found a guy with a body temp of 92 degrees... That's soooooo low for the human body.

From Jon on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 12:36:28 from 107.203.52.135

Jeez, that's quite the story! Glad you're ok.

From Steve on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 12:54:45 from 66.87.113.141

That was insane. It's a good sign of who you are to take that experience like you have. I'm betting on a come back marathon this summer.

From Walter on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 12:59:44 from 97.48.204.207

Trevor I kind of ruled it out when they took it from my ear because the paramedics read 96, 10 minutes later. I did have a strange man cuddling me though. Who knows. Lol

Jon, thanks. It was not my day. I'm feeling a marathon pr though.

Steve, you are awesome! Even if you exposed my ass to the top three lady runners. I always enjoy our comraderie!!

From Christie on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 13:03:02 from 74.213.202.246

Sometimes your body just has other plans than what you would like. Super frustrating but you dealt with it and gave what you had... onward to UVM! :D

From Dave Taylor on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 18:47:42 from 174.23.74.200

Scary story (glad you're OK) but I still can't get the image of a garbage bag with a bare butt hanging out of it out of my head. It's getting funnier and funnier the more I think about it. I hope you (hee hee) are at (har) 100% for (chortle) AF canyon (guffaw :) See you there :]=8=

From Walter on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 19:00:23 from 97.48.204.207

Christie, onward and upward.

Dave, I pulled the garbage bag off me are my bare butt wouldn't be shown off to Tara and Tee and Devra! When I looked back at them they were hopefully acting like they didn't just catch a glimpse of my skinny arse. Lol

From JulieC on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 19:14:25 from 63.224.112.62

Wow walter...seriously! And i thought i was the only dnfer out there! U take the prize with your near death experience....but that is probably because i listened to my body and u didnt ;) a first for me. Hope u r well today.

From JulieC on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 19:16:27 from 63.224.112.62

So ended up running it? 4 hours huh? Runyour race app told all my family i finished the race in 3:06.04! Ha ha. I got messages congratulating me!

From Tara on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 19:20:42 from 75.169.138.61

AHHHH! That is horrible Walter, worse than I originally thought. 92 degrees!! Geeze.

Somehow I missed the unintentional moon. You're safe. I can't account for Tee and Devera's eyes, however:) Glad you're okay.

From Walter on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 19:21:05 from 97.48.204.207

Julie I didn't finish. It wouldn't let me post this unless I put a time at the top. It was a miserable day. I woke up with another migraine today but slept it off. I've been laying all day. My chip kept registering me as they drove over the chip pads and they parked close to the finish mat to get me out so it registered me as 5th overall. Lol

From Walter on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 19:40:23 from 97.48.204.207

Tara thanks for the reassurance. You'll know our antics at the next race if we're together. To much play time to get serious. Haha.

From Tom on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 19:47:23 from 160.7.252.221

Wow what a crazy race for you Walter. Sound like your migraine DNF experience was scarier than mine a few years back so glad you're recovering and hope the migraines go bye-bye.

Good thing you're used to cuddling with Bill in our bed down at Pleasant Palms so you didn't get too weirded out when a strange man laid on you.

From Walter on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 19:52:26 from 97.48.204.207

Tom I guess you're right! Sleeping three to a bed with other runners has ruined my basic instinct. I did have my head in a ladies lap as she was holding my head pushing on my pressure points. I wished my gopro could've caught that action!

From SpencerSimpson on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 19:58:15 from 166.147.88.24

Walter your body was experiencing hypothermic shock most likely. Hypothermia is pretty crazy. your BP registered normal because you are pretty much a machine, but I'm sure once they warmed you up because of how fit you are that your body recovered very quickly. I only wonder that if you would have had your excedrine or migraine meds had your body been able to withstand this. The migraine was definitely of factor. Yiur description of of the experience sounds exactly like hypothermia. Great report. So many people can benefit from war stories like this just as much as a champions gallop. Loved it. Didn't love your pain. Fight on brotha!

From josse on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 20:14:30 from 174.239.68.82

So sorry I have this happen in 2 marathons a several training runs so I know how bad it sucks. Glad you are okay:) I'm surprised I never saw you at the start, I was lined up behind Tara and never saw you.

From Walter on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 20:15:28 from 97.48.204.207

Spencer, I agree and was waiting for someone to comment on this. Once I stopped no matter how hard I pushed it was too late. My core was messed up! Plus after I puked my head was in extreme pain!

From AngieB on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 21:58:25 from 65.130.91.7

Wow scary! Glad your ok and got some good hugs by that guy:) Good thing they got to you when they did.

From Walter on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 22:47:25 from 97.48.204.207

Josse I remember that pick of Provo I believe it was with your pic. Scary. We push ourselves way to hard!!

Angie, thank you. And yes my homophob senses really didn't care or kick in at that point. Lol

From RileyCook on Thu, May 23, 2013 at 09:43:33 from 132.3.45.83

Tough day Walter. I'm glad you're all right.

I had a rough race, but yours sounds way worse.

Two years ago I threw up several times right around mile 16! I swear there's something about that stretch of the race!

From gpzmax on Thu, May 23, 2013 at 14:01:36 from 216.169.203.66

Walter, I am glad you recovered. You and that lead group really took off at the start. I know you were in a bad way when I saw you just before 16 or so. I had a similar experience at STG last year. After the race my temp dropped below 92 and I spent the next couple of hours at the hospital. That was an expensive race.

From Walter on Thu, May 23, 2013 at 14:49:11 from 97.49.119.227

Riley I'm usually picking up my pace at that point but this day was horrid.

Gpzmax, I was for the ambulance until they told me I had to pay. I said I'd rather walk to the finish than pay. Luckily the van I was in cooperated to take me to the finish.
