Run until I'm 99 with Kim by my side and remember that EVERY RUN IS A GREAT RUN!

Had one of those disastrous races with a glorious blowup complete with cramping, walking, wailing and gnashing of teeth from about mile 9.5 to the end.  Kim ran a lot smarter and did very well especially considering she just barely started running again last week after her injury and not running at for about 4 weeks.

My finish time actually would have been low 1:30's but I was so perturbed at the idea of running the actual race slower than my training run on the same course 2 weeks ago, I decided around mile 12 to turnaround and head back to find Kim and finish with her and just tack on an extra mile or so to my overall miles for the day.

So what I think the main problems were today: 1) Late start & heat (but this was expected so can't make excuses about this one - Hawk blamed the bus company - said he ordered 24 busses but only 14 showed up),  2) Cramping just after mile 9 (why? I haven't cramped forever!), and probably the main reason 3) Ran mile 1 too fast around 6:19 on the garmin but closer to 6:10 according to the mile 1 marker.

Plan was to run around 5-10 seconds faster per mile than my training run 2 weeks ago to finish in around 1:27-1:28. This meant miles 1-6 around 6:35, mile 7 6:45, mile 8 6:35 and rest of miles around 6:50.

Felt super good at the beginning and decided to ignore the watch and run by feel.  I think I really blew it during 1st mile running to too fast.  

Splits below until I sort of stopped paying attention around mile 11 or 12.

1 - 6:19 (feeling like Superman)

2 - 6:39 (feeling the need to repent for mile 1 being too fast)

3- 6:37 (next few miles feel pretty dang good)

4 - 6:35

5 - 6:33

6 - 6:38

7 - 6:56 (coming up the hill at the fork I'm starting to think I may be headed for trouble)

8 - 6:50 (starting to get indications of crash-and-burn pending along with cramping)

9 - 7:07 (can't hold sub-7, cramping begins and the end is nigh)

10 - 9:36 (full-blown cramping and jog/walk begins)

11 - 9:45

.............. Everything after this point is 9 min pace at best,  walking pace at worst.

Oh well, you can't win em all.  Looks like the field was maybe the fastest ever this year, I don't think I ever remember top 3 in 45-49 AD all being sub-1:20 (actually 3rd place may have been  1:21).  Dang.

That race attracts the fast of the fast (although our race today had Seth Wold---out for a jog!) The times posted there are always incredible. That is why, despite their horrible organization and timing issues every year, people keep coming back!

Sorry you had a bad race. It really sucks (can I say that?) to not hit what you wanted. But, as you know, we all have off days! I am sure KIM was thrilled with your company (although, as a woman married to a runner it pains us to not see you do as well as you want).

Hope the next race is better for you! It will be St George and you will be AMAZING, I know it!

Just one of those days. You know what you are capable of so dont worry about it. I'm sure Kim was happy to have you run the last few miles with her.

I think it is kind of funny that every year the bus company doesn't send enough busses. He needs to come up with a new excuse.

Andy - it occurred to me shortly after I talked to you that I pretty much made you stop cold in the middle of your race to have a little chat. Sorry about that! I'm not sure what I was thinking - actually I wasn't thinking much at all at that time. I hope it didn't completely mess you up, that was really brain dead of me. Nonetheless thanks a ton for doing that, I appreciated your words a bunch.

Sorry Tom, that really sucks! I have a hard time understanding why these races can't start on time! Some of the most efficient races this year for me have been city ran races! Everyone of them have started on time! As far as the cramping it's hard to say, but starting the race late surely didn't help... Hang in there and don't be to hard on yourself, there's always another race around the corner.

I'm not buying the first mile being 20-25 seconds to fast as the reason for the extra poor performace at the end of a half marathon. Maybe a fast mile cuts into miles 10-13 by 15 seconds a mile but not cramping etc...

I think you need to rethink what caused it. You shouldn't crash and burn with as many miles as you put in unless something happened, like you got sick or you got dehydrated, went to the race fasting?

Anyway forget about it and have an enjoyable next week with the family.

Terry definitely not fasting going into the race, too much food if anything. I guess pre-wedding stress, having 4 guests from Japan staying with us, messed up sleep patterns, global warming, etc.... who knows?

But like you said...time to just forget about it and move one. This was more of a glorified marathon training run on the schedule anyway and pretty good 8-9 mile fast tempo run.

Tom, I ran the Salt Lake Half in 2005. 4 miles up hill 9 miles down. I averaged 7:50 for the first 4 and 6:05 for the last 9. It's one of those beautiful canyon type runs.

Terry I don't think I'll be doing the SL Half. Kim reminded me that doing a race solely for revenge/retribution purposes is usually not a bright thing to do. So I'm thinking a good long run with 10-15 miles of MP will be more beneficial for the SGM training.

Sorry it didn't turn out as planned. Like you said just one of those days. We have all had them and sometimes they happen to be on race day. You are doing the right thing by trying your best to learn something from it and then move on. You are training great and the results will come!

Just think of all the training benefit you got from pushing so hard in the beginning and suffering thru the end. You'll come out of this one stronger. Forget about the time....another race will be here before you know it.
