Running Accomplishments:

I ran my first marathon in 1998: "The Friendly Marathon" in Massey, Ontario.  I was 32. I had never raced in a shorter event, and I trained really poorly - ended up running it in 4:00:30.  After that, I gave up running for the most part for 6 years.  I got into karate a bit more seriously, until I got my knee kicked out and had ACL surgery.  Then I became a 'fair weather runner' and started to run half marathons every so often.  As a priest, entering weekend races always meant having to book a holiday, so it just didn't happen much.  My holidays were primarily focussed on various canoe and kayak trips.

At some point, I started training more consistently, and started to think of myself as a runner.  I guess doing that in your 40's is better than never doing it at all.  I even started to wonder if I had it in me to qualify for Boston.  Well, I did.  First time didn't count, I suppose, since I didn't make the "cut".  But the second time was a charm, and on my sixth Marathon, run in Chicago in 2015, I beat my BQ by almost 6 minutes.  And now, running a BQ is routine for me, not that I have any desire to run Boston again.

Through it all, I've made tons of mistakes - and have had lots of injuries to show for it.  Hopefully, now that I'm in my late 50's, I'm a bit wiser and can use that to my advantage to continue running for a very long time.

My PRs:

Short-Term Running Goals:

I really want to take on the Haliburton 100 again, after it kicked my butt in 2024, but I'm going to wait until 2026 to take it on again, when I'm 60 years old.

For 2025, I want to try running a Backyard Ultra, just to see how far I can run.

So, a couple of fun runs:  30K Around the Bay in March, and Pick Your Poison 50K in April, followed by Coach D's Backyard in May.  That one only runs for 24 hours, so I'm using it to see how I handle the format, in view of running my goal race for 2025:  The Bush Bitches Backyard, here in my hometown of Sudbury, in October.  Let the training begin!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Run until this old body of mine won't let me run any more.  I was inspired in the Spring of 2016, watching the start of the Ottawa Marathon.  Near the back of the pack was an 'old man', running with his walker.  I loved it!  I thought ... there's me in 20 years.  Maybe.

Personal:

I am a Roman Catholic priest of 31 years, ministering in the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie.  I spent 8 years ministering in the small town of Wawa (where I helped establish the annual Blackfly Run) and 9 years in Sault Ste. Marie.  I have been in the Sudbury region now for 14 years.  Currently I Pastor 2 small Parishes:  St. John the Evangelist in Garson, and St. Bernardine of Siena in Skead, covering the area just Northeast of the city, surrounding the Sudbury Airport.

Tough go of it today, mostly related to the start time for this long run.

I had a dentist appointment at 10:15 in Lively.  Out of there at 11:00.  Left my truck at my brother-in-law's place (mechanic) to have a ball joint replaced, changed into my gear, and was running by 11:09.  It was kinda hot by then, with no wind and totally clear skies.  21C/70F, with a Dew Point of 17C/63F - doable.  Over the next four hours, the temperature climbed, while the DP dropped.

From my hotel to the town of Lively is exactly the distance I wanted to run today - 22 miles.  But I stuck to the trails, figuring it should come out pretty close to the same, which it did.

So, through Mikkola to the Kinsmen Sports Complex, through the Trans Canada Trail connecting to Fielding Park (a nice trail; slightly technical in places), along the Kelly Lake portion of the Trans Canada Trail (everything from wide path to narrow technicals and smelly mud), to Southview Drive.

Down Southview to the Robinson Trail where the heat finally caught up with me.  Wimped out in the shade for a few minutes before I continued on.  My heart rate was really up.  Through the Moon Glow Subdivision (read:  built on a series of big hills), to the 4 Corners (major intersection in the City of Sudbury) and up Loach's Road to the Trail connecting to Laurentian University.  Long pause in the shade half way down this trail, overlooking Lake Nepahwin.

Onto the Laurentian Trails, where I was reduced to a walk for the most part.  Even on the flats.  It was kinda embarrassing.  Took the connecting trail to the Laurentian Conservation Area and finally met up with the trail leading to Moonlight Beach.  I was at mile 16, and just ran out of gatoraide, but after experiencing that 2 weeks ago, I bought a 2 litre bladder for my Camelbak and had that to carry me through.

At mile 17.5, I pulled off the Camelbak, checked cell phone messages, and laid down on a bench in the shade for a bit.  That helped.  I managed to run the final 4.5 miles through Moonlight, up to Bancroft, and then back to my hotel.  Went through 1 gel, 2 Clif Bars, 2 Gatoraides and 2 Litres of water.  Still have a 24 and 26 miler to do in August, so I'm hoping that an earlier start in the day will allow me to do them a bit more eloquently.

Ran an average pace of 11:17, with an elevation gain of 886 feet, and a running time of 4:08:19.  I'll take it.

Fast Tempo run ... 7:30 pace.  Train Route - got well ahead of the freight train today.

Pretty wet run.  Temperature was 18C/65F.  Dew point was the same.  Humidity sitting at 98%.

I was extra pleased with this run, since it was just 10 hours since I finished yesterday's 22 miler.  Basically like doing 2 intense runs on the same day.

Easy recovery run on the train route.  No train today, although I think I heard the horn sound from 3 miles away near the end of my run.

8:22 pace.  Sure feels easy when it's cool:  a very nice 12C/53F ... quite the difference from the last few days.

Heading to my parent's camp rental on Manitoulin Island today.  4 hours of riding - it doesn't get much better than that!

65 minute "hilly" run was prescribed.

About a mile from my hotel there is the local cemetery.  I ducked in there and ended up doing 12 laps around it.  It was just over a half mile/lap.  All hills, so a perfect workout.  Actually wanted to see where it was anyway, as I'm performing a burial there this afternoon (right at the top of the steepest hill).

Kept a pretty good pace of 8:05/mile.  Not terribly hot at 19C/66F, but challenging enough with the 98% humidity.  A fox ran with me the last quarter mile back to my hotel.  Those things can really move.

Easy recovery run, along Lake Ramsey to Science North and back.  Averaged a pace of 8:28, for a running time just shy of 90 minutes.  Cool and rainy day; just 13C/55F.  Perfect for running.

My legs are feeling a little punky.  I'm glad for tomorrow off.  Driving to the Niagara Falls region to do some trail runs (Monday), wine tours (Tuesday), Blue Jays Ballgame (Wednesday) and a short 6k race on the Toronto Islands (Thursday).
