Half-Marathon - 1:24:30.56 (Handcart Days)

In my freshmen year, I lettered in both track and cross country. I also got the Rookie of the Year Award in cross country, and the Freshmen of the Year Award in track. At regions for XC I was 7th. At state I was 65th. In track at regions I placed 3rd in the mile and 2nd in the 2 mile. At state I was 17th in the mile and 13th in the 2 mile.

Sophomore year I was a cross country captain and I lettered again. I was 3rd at regions and 12th at state. At track regions I was 3rd in the mile and the 2 mile. I also anchored the winning medley relay team.

Junior year I got a stress fracture about a month before the cross country season started, but made a great comeback with a 2nd place finish at regions.  At state I placed 6th, and I broke 19 minutes for the second time in my racing history.  Team captain again. In track I shattered my old PRs and was doing well until I got a stress reaction.  After 3 weeks off I built my strength back up and performed well at state, earning 4th in the 1600 and 5th in the 3200.  After that, I was invited to the Great Southwest Track Meet in Albuquerque, where I took 5th.

My senior year in cross country I was a captain again, this time with Amanda and Natalie.  This season I was injury free so I got to run competitively at invites.  At state I took 3rd.  At Footlocker Western Regionals I outkicked a girl on the track to finish 10th, which qualified me for nationals the next weekend.  I beat both of the girls who had beat me at state in that race.  At nationals I took 22nd and beat 6 of the girls who had beat me at regionals.  Going into the outdoor season the first Invitational I attended was the Davis Super Meet where I qualified for state in the 1600 and the 3200, and I broke the meet record for the 3200 in an 11:01.29, the previous record was an 11:17.  I had a strong finish to my senior season and finally claimed a state title.  I ran the fastest 1600 and 3200 at state for any division, claiming the double crown in those events, and earning the athlete of the year award :)

Now in college, I run for the University of Utah.  I lettered my freshman season of cross country, and made it to regionals in the 5k in track.

Sophomore year I improved in cross country.  In track I raced the 1500, 5k, 800, 10k, and the mile of the DMR before repeating the 5k at conference and then the 10k at regionals.  Placed 28th behind a lot of seniors... so nationals next year!!

This morning it was the annual slurpee run again because of 7-11 free slurpees day!  Fortunately since I was already ceremoniously kicked off the team I didn't have to actually consume any slurpees though :)  I still ran to all of the 7-11s and at most of them I waited with whoever was stopped to get slurpees and then I would leave with some of the first people that left.  At most of them that ended up being Tomy and Scott.  And I ran a lot with Emily, she wasn't having any slurpees either.  And Nelson was with us on his bike.  We did all the same ones as last year but instead of having the last one be the one by East we hit up the one on 500e and 1300s and met up at the drinking fountain.  Then I decided to head back up to Sunnyside Park early with Scotty and Emily.  When I got back to the park I went to the drinking fountain which got me 9 and a half miles and then I did part of a lap up by the river and behind the tennis courts back to the cars to get me up to a full 10.  Then I did 3 sets of the secondary strength exercises while I waited for the team to get back.  They still weren't back by the time I finished so I drove down to Liberty to see what they were up to and found that they had done laps in the park and they were just about to run back up to Sunnyside.  I think 10 is plenty for the day though.  I don't know how many miles I'll be able to hit this week because of girls camp and having to be at orientation early tomorrow but I'll do my best.  But maybe its a good thing its a busy week so I don't end up doing too many mileage.  My hamstring didn't hurt at all and I feel like that is taken care of now, I just have to take good care of it for the future.

This evening when I got home from a long day of presentations at orientation, my legs were killing me!  I took a 13 minute ice bath, which turned out to not even be that cold, and then I did 3 sets of abs with the medicine ball.  While my legs were still cold they didn't hurt but now that they've warmed up they still hurt a lot!!  And I don't know why! :P

This morning I got up and ran on my own since I wouldn't have had time to go to the workout at Wheeler Farm and made it to orientation on time.  I ran from my house to Sugarhouse, did 2 grass laps, and came back.  Then I did my abs exercises with the swiss ball and my supermans.  I did the medicine ball exercises in the evening.  I did 3 sets of everything.

This morning I got up early and drove with Abigail to Jessie's house to run together before girls camp.  We ran down to 1600e then across to 1700s and cut down to 1500e and took that over to 2100s.  Then we ran up to 2100e and over to where it turns into Foothill and then down Sunnyside and back to Jessie's house along 1700e.  That was a little over 5 miles so I did a loop around some of the blocks in the neighborhood to get up to 6.

In the evening after a rainy day at girls camp I did my secondary strength and abs workouts 3 times each before going to bed.

This morning Natalie, Abigail, and I did not want to get out of our comfortable, warm sleeping bags to go run in the 45 degree weather.  But we did it anyway, we needed to wake up some of the girls in the other tents to come run too, though only Sarah came because the other girls decided to go later since they didn't have to do as many miles.  The leader Sarah came too so there were 5 of us.  We left camp and ran down the road to the highway and ran the opposite way of  the cars.  Because there isn't really anywhere to go we just had to do out halfway and back for our miles.  I was with Natalie on the way out until going up a hill I got distracted and then when I looked up she was way far ahead of me, but she waited for me at the turnaround where we made a landmark that spelled "FAT" in some rocks for Sarah B. since she had wanted to do 8.  On the way back we stayed together, and were able to go a lot faster since now we had the wind to our backs.  For funsies we were playing with our shadows :)  We hit 8 miles at the gate to enter the camp and walked back up the hill to the campsite, we strategically planned the turnaround so that we would be done before having to finish by running up the hill :)

This morning Natalie and I seriously asked ourselves why we run as we slowly got out of our sleeping bags and got ready to run.  Abigail didn't run and later when she finally got up she looked really tired so I don't really blame her.  Today it was just Nat, Sarah, and me.  We ran the same as yesterday but turned around sooner since we only were doing 6 today.  On the way back we saw a raccoon sleeping in the road with its bone sticking out of its leg.  We also so a chipmunk sleeping in the road.  Our shadows looked cool because we all had put rag curlers in our hair the day before so we all looked like Shirley Temple!  And since Nat and I had started the run in our pajama pants we used them as capes on the way back since we had warmed up by then and now had the wind to our backs.

This afternoon when I got home I did 3 sets of the secondary strength exercises and then 1 set of abs.

This morning when I got to the race I ran on the trail out a mile and half and back for my warmup to get me 3 miles.  Then I changed shoes and took my Gu and did a few strides before getting on the start line.  I started next to Emily and stayed close to her through the first mile.  There was another girl with long blonde hair that was with us and I didn't know who she was (I later found out she is going to be a freshman at Alta next year) but she was able to stay with us for a while.  I was slightly behind Emily at the mile and she got 5:39 for her split (they weren't calling them and I wasn't wearing a watch) so I was probably just over 5:40.  The next mile had some downhill so Emily and the pack of guys she was with separated on me there and I was battling with the girl with the long blonde hair.  Eventually I was able to pull away but Emily was still far ahead of me.  During the 3rd mile I caught a few of the guys who had been with Emily and was able to close the gap on her a little bit at some points though not by much and only by really focusing on staying pushing.  When we got to the turn which took us east heading back to the park it was slightly uphill so I thought I should be able to catch up a little bit then, which I did, but then there was another slight downhill going down to the final stretch of the race.  I was kicking by then and closing a bit on Emily and Taylor, though it would have been a miracle if I had caught them, but I could tell when they started to kick that there was no way.  Still I pushed hard to get to the finish, I was close to breaking 18 but didn't quite make it, still I am happy with my time considering I haven't been getting a lot of mileage, I haven't done speed in about 2 weeks, I didn't eat pasta last night, and it was one of my best times anyway :)  Afterwards I cooled down the same as I had warmed up, I started it with Jamal and Teren and Nathan but then I slowed down after a while because their cooldown pace is about my regular running pace.  When I got home from the race I did 3 sets of the abs exercises.
