Half-Marathon - 1:24:30.56 (Handcart Days)

In my freshmen year, I lettered in both track and cross country. I also got the Rookie of the Year Award in cross country, and the Freshmen of the Year Award in track. At regions for XC I was 7th. At state I was 65th. In track at regions I placed 3rd in the mile and 2nd in the 2 mile. At state I was 17th in the mile and 13th in the 2 mile.

Sophomore year I was a cross country captain and I lettered again. I was 3rd at regions and 12th at state. At track regions I was 3rd in the mile and the 2 mile. I also anchored the winning medley relay team.

Junior year I got a stress fracture about a month before the cross country season started, but made a great comeback with a 2nd place finish at regions.  At state I placed 6th, and I broke 19 minutes for the second time in my racing history.  Team captain again. In track I shattered my old PRs and was doing well until I got a stress reaction.  After 3 weeks off I built my strength back up and performed well at state, earning 4th in the 1600 and 5th in the 3200.  After that, I was invited to the Great Southwest Track Meet in Albuquerque, where I took 5th.

My senior year in cross country I was a captain again, this time with Amanda and Natalie.  This season I was injury free so I got to run competitively at invites.  At state I took 3rd.  At Footlocker Western Regionals I outkicked a girl on the track to finish 10th, which qualified me for nationals the next weekend.  I beat both of the girls who had beat me at state in that race.  At nationals I took 22nd and beat 6 of the girls who had beat me at regionals.  Going into the outdoor season the first Invitational I attended was the Davis Super Meet where I qualified for state in the 1600 and the 3200, and I broke the meet record for the 3200 in an 11:01.29, the previous record was an 11:17.  I had a strong finish to my senior season and finally claimed a state title.  I ran the fastest 1600 and 3200 at state for any division, claiming the double crown in those events, and earning the athlete of the year award :)

Now in college, I run for the University of Utah.  I lettered my freshman season of cross country, and made it to regionals in the 5k in track.

Sophomore year I improved in cross country.  In track I raced the 1500, 5k, 800, 10k, and the mile of the DMR before repeating the 5k at conference and then the 10k at regionals.  Placed 28th behind a lot of seniors... so nationals next year!!

Short-Term Running Goals:

 Run a 5k in under 18 minutes

Win state in the 1600 and 3200

Place in the top 5 at state in the 1600

Make it to Footlocker National Championships

Make it to nationals

Run sub 16:30 5k

Run sub 9:30 3k

Break the school record in the 10k

Break the school record in the 5k

Long-Term Running Goals:

This morning I got up and went for a run before my anatomy review at 9.  I just made up a random route but it took me up t0 1900e, a lap around Sugarhouse, and included a part out on Imperial Street and then home.  Time to study!

Today I went for a run with the team.  We decided to save our Trax allotment for Friday (last week Kep told us we could do it once before Christmas break :( ) so each day has been a struggle finding somewhere to run.  But today it was zoo loop!  My favorite!  Not really, but out of the options in the Foothill direction it is good enough. :)  We were in a group until about 3.75, then as is the norm everyone turned except for Hilary and me.  I am so glad she also does high miles and will do them with me! :)  We ran to the drinking fountain by the freeway and took a stretching break before running back.  We cut through the golf course because we had intended to do hills at Huntsman, but when we got back to campus we just decided to run out and back on the road above the track.

Today we had a workout at Liberty!  :)  I wore my black rain hat and it rained :)  and the temperature was perfect :)  I just love workout days when I go into them with this positive of an attitude :)  For warmup we did the usual from the 900e Trax station, adding a little extra with Hilary around the edge of the park.  We did our usual strides and drills and changed shoes.  I ran without tape!  And changed into flats for the first time in ages!  That's just how excited I was for this workout!  It was ten 800s with 30 seconds recovery, I was just supposed to go at Kate's pace of 3:08 and we were to stay as even as we could.  The times fluctuated between each section of the park but the times on the same sections were consistent.  We hit 3:12, 3:00 (the first one had felt like I was pushing hard and then I was surprised how slow it was, I guess it was just extra warmup), 3:05, 3:08, 3:06, 3:04, 3:09, 3:07, 3:05, 3:11.  They felt great, a challenge but not too difficult.  Having such short rest also was not bad because it meant we didn't stand around forever between reps.  Eventually (like January probably) the stuff will get faster I think.  After the last one Kate and I did strides with Hilary back to where we started and then changed shoes back. Kate panicked when the other girls almost left her and she would have been stuck with Hilary and I for cooldown!  Muahahaha! :)  For our cooldown we ran the long way around the park and back to the 900e station, and caught the same train as the other girls :)  My knee did hurt a little bit during the workout during the first few reps but I didn't notice at the end.  I think I will start icing after workouts.  For warmups in rehab I just bike now instead of heating pad.  Each day I keep making progress :)

I went and got my second lift of the week done today and then got my blood drawn for iron testing again.  So I cut my miles to just 3 today.  I started with the girls on Foothill, but they turned early.  I did the Albertson's loop but came back on 1900e instead of 21st.  Did one lap around the Huntsman when I got back to get to the full 7.

Today we were supposed to do a hilly run, and decided to do an out and back on 11th Avenue (this did NOT count for the Trax run since we weren't running all the way down!)  The other girls turned early and as usual it was Hilary and I going for higher mileage.  It was really foggy up on 11th and in the canyon, so we decided to run down Memory Grove to sunny downtown so we could run back up South Temple :)  also not Trax :)  and still hilly :)  and happy because it was sunny now :)  When we got up to 1400e we ran over to President's circle and up and then made a loop around the institute parking lot and back to the locker room to finish at 9 for the day.  Then we went to the weight room and foam rolled for a bit before catching the bus home since we are neighbors now :)

This morning after my final class of the semester (YAAAYYY!!!) I went and got my rehab done and went for a run on my own since I am going to a PT info session later in the afternoon.  (Also exciting!)  I took my iPod and ran the zoo loop route up onto Wasatch.  I hit 3.5 just past 1300s and ran back the same way.  Coming down Sunnyside I actually saw the elephants as I ran by!!  Usually there are wooden posts or something up but not today :)  When I got back to Foothill the lane of traffic by the sidewalk was closed so I took advantage of it and ran in the road :)  I thought I might confuse some people into thinking there was a road race going on..  Heehee.  When I finished I stretched for a bit and iced my knee.

This morning after sleeping in and studying for a bit I took a break to go running :)  I ran to Liberty Park, did a lap around the perimeter, then ran out on 700e.  At 1700s I cut up to 900e and then over to 2100s and up to 1300e.  Along 21st and 13th people suck at looking both ways when they pull up to turn!  And they all had phones in their hands!  I seriously think I might go print on some neon shirts with black letters saying "Hang up, save a life" on them to wear for the winter!  Planning the design of these shirts occupied my mind the rest of the run.

Too cold for shorts.  I had to wear my capris for my run this morning.  I ran to Liberty Park and ran part of the perimeter down to 500e and across.  My iPod fell out of my pocket and into the snow...  Mud got into the headphone jack but considering I've dropped it in the ice bath twice I think it will be fine.  I kept running along 500e.  I thought I saw a frozen dog in the gutter at about 1900s, it was just a FREE CAT!  Gross.  I ran all the way out t0 3300s and then turned and ran back along 700e.  I realized part way through that I completely forgot about knee rehab, but it didn't hurt or anything so whatever.  And it's finals week, my mind is occupied with other stuff.  I finished at 10, average pace was 7:20 and the whole run felt pretty easy :)  When I went inside I had a text from Hanah... my ferritin is back down to 24 :'(  I guess I've been slacking on getting my iron, I'll have to work on that.

Today I went running on my own after seeing the dentist :P  I missed the group when they went so no one was around to see my crooked smile!  I did my rehab and then started my run.  I ran up Legacy Bridge and then south on the roads until I reached Sunnyside just below the post office.  Good thing the air was pretty clear today, spitting is hard when half of your face is numb :P  I turned and then ran up above the zoo and onto Wasatch.  Then I started a fartlek, I did ten sets of 1 minute on 1 minute off.  A little past 21st as I finished the 8th set I hit 5 miles so I turned and ran the other way for the last 2, and then returned to campus the same way I had come.

Today I finally went and picked up my winter workout sheet(s)!  I have both the 800/1500 sheet and the long distance sheet.  I am just going to choose stuff from both and modify stuff as I feel necessary and with Kep's approval...  After I got those I grabbed my iPod and went for a hilly run in the avenues :)  I ran down campus to South Temple and 1300e, and then on T Street started my zig-zag up to 11th Avenue :)  I haven't done this run in so long!  On 11th I ran down City Creek and Memory Grove, and went back to campus on South Temple.  I made a long loop around the institute parking area to get up to 10 miles total for the day.  I was really sore from lifting yesterday, and could definitely feel it at the end of the run so I took an ice bath!  And I'm sitting on my foam roller as I type this, so soooore!

Today I took a study break from physics to get my run in.  I took my sweet time getting up to the locker room and doing my rehab in the training room.  I ran up Legacy Bridge and then over to Sunnyside like I did on Tuesday.  Then I ran up Emigration until I hit 5 miles.  I ran back the same way.  When I was finished I iced my knee and did stem on my back.  Front squats and kettle bell swings seem to bother it...

This morning I got up and went for a tempo run at Liberty Park.  I warmed up to the park and then did 3 laps around the perimeter at faster pace.  I wanted to do at least sub 7s, and was able to hold in the 6:40s for most of the time.  The total distance was about a tenth of a mile short of 5 miles I think.  For cooldown I ran to 1700s and then up to 1300e and back to the apartment to finish at 10.  The average pace for the whole thing was 7:00 :)  Now I get to study physics until my final at 3:30!  Then this semester will be done! :)

This afternoon I went for a run in the snow.  Snow was getting in my eyes the first few miles and I was wishing I had worn a hat with a visor, but then it stopped!  I ran down 1300e past Sugarhouse, wiping out on the snow as I passed the big sledding hill, then turned up Parkway Avenue.  I ran down Imperial Street to 3300s and then ran up to Melbourne and then ran back north on 18th east and then 1700e to 2100s, then back home on 1300e.  When I was just past Yale a dog came out of nowhere and just started running with me and I was terrified!  Still haven't got rid of that fear of dogs that came with the bite in October.  It took a few tries of starting and stopping to finally get going without it following me!  Finished at 10 to make it 60 for the week :)

This morning after sleeping in until 10 (so nice being done with finals!) :)  I got up and got my first workout of the week done.  I am going to Florida for the rest of the week so thought it would be easier to get it done today.  I ran to the track at East for warmup, and then did a mile of speedchanges.  For my workout I picked five 1000s, and was thinking 800 recovery but after the first one remembered why I had done 600 before-- counting miles is easier.  The wind was going north and not fun, and I was planning on alternating each of them but after the second when I had to run into the wind 3 times I decided to just do them all finishing at the other side of the track.  My times were 3:28, 3:33, 3:34, 3:34, and for the last one I switched again into the wind and hit 3:37... I wanted to finish by where I left my gloves and didn't think until 100 meters into the last set that I could have just done the recovery to there :P  Oh well.  It was a great workout for early season, I am glad I got it done early :)  For cooldown I ran about 2 and a half so I could finish with 10 for the day.

Today after arriving in Florida I went for a nice run in the sunshine and warmth!  I ran out on the main roads until I hit a light, but I was at 3 miles so I headed back and when I got closer to where I started I took a different way back to add on and finish at 9.  I enjoyed today's weather much better than yesterday's wind at the track!

This morning I got up early to run around the neighborhood in Orlando before going to Seaworld! :)  The night before, one of the girls I am staying with drove me around the neighborhood to show me the safe zone, and strongly advised me to take my phone!  Fortunately I didn't have to start as early as yesterday so it was lighter.  Also there were people out walking their dogs.  I was able to weave and make a bunch of random loops and I did that until I got 6 miles.

Went to the Orlando Temple this morning :)  and didn't run before.  And then we saw the Hobbit, and then drove back to Gainesville.  So it was dark when I started to run, but this area has more options than Orlando did.  I ran out to the round about and took 2 rights and ran up until it went to the freeway.  I turned and ran back the same way, then added on in the parking lot until I was at 6 to finish the week at 45.

Didn't make my connecting flight from Atlanta back to Salt Lake, and then I got stuck in Dallas when the reroute that had me on American Airlines didn't have a seat for me.  It was a rough night and I ended up having to go to a hotel, and I decided to hit the treadmill to cool off.  I ran 5 miles and felt a bit better, and then went and watched A Christmas Story :)

I finally made it home yesterday around 2:30!  And finally took my day off for the week.  Today I had planned on doing 200s at a track, but it snowed all night so running to one wasn't going to work and the roads weren't too great either so going to the oval was a no.  So I ran 7 miles on the treadmill.  My right hip is starting to hurt again, I am thinking I must have aggravated it during my workout last week.  I did some hip exercises from PT last summer, hopefully I can prevent the problem before it starts!

Hello more snow.  I didn't want to run on the treadmill again so I decided I would go for the un-shovelled sidewalks and un-plowed roads in the cold.  But then my Garmin wouldn't start so I almost ended up on the treadmill, but I was able to reset it and get it going :)  I ran 2 loops over to 2100s and up to 1900e and down 900s and then a few blocks extra to finish at 10.  My hip didn't hurt today but I will still keep up the hip exercises.

I finally made it to a track today!  And my sister's workout was similar to the one I had in mind so I joined her so I wouldn't be doing the work alone.  After a 4 lap warmup and a lot of stretching and drills, I changed to my flats and then we jogged over to the mile start.  The oval was crazy packed with a lot of high school teams practicing and with spectators for the speed skaters.  My goal for the mile was to hit 5:30.  I kinda guessed for the first lap split because I don't know exactly where the first 400 mark is... but it was 1:22.  At 800 to go I was at 2:52, then 4:16, and I finished in 5:39.  After a lap recovery we did two sets of three 300s.  My times for those were 56, 58, 58, 58, 57, 56.  Then we did a 6 lap cooldown to get to 7 for the day.

Today I went out to Draper with Abigail to meet up with Kiley.  I had a workout planned so I didn't get to run with them but wanted to hang out after.  We were at Draper Park so I just ran the Draper Days course for warmup.  Then I started on my 30 minute tempo.  I made it one and a half times through the course, hitting exactly 4.5 miles in the 30 minutes.  I finished the loop I was on for cooldown to 9.  Kiley and Abigail weren't back yet so I decided to add another mile out and back on the trail.  Then I saw them :)  So we finished close to the same time.
