Can I just say that I LOVE BETHANY!!!  Running is so much more fun when you have somebody else to do it with.  Also, since today was her first run and my third, I didn't feel like I had to impress her.  It was great to have somebody there to push me a little, somebody who is fun and funny.  I can't say enough good things about Bethany!  I'm hoping to see her on the blog soon.

So, about running.  "Ran" 2 miles on the Planet Walk today with Bethany.  I had almost no pain in my quads this morning, so running didn't hurt as much as it did yesterday.  My legs felt pretty heavy by about 3/4 of the way through the run, but Bethany didn't have to carry me back or anything, so it wasn't too bad.  The biggest news: I ran half a mile without stopping to walk--halfway to my goal.  I'm supposed to run a mile without walking by Wednesday of next week.  I'll definitely let you know if it happens.  (If it does, I'll have to come up with a new short-term goal.)

Do you think it's cheating to count my walking miles as miles?  I figure that, since I can walk faster than I can run, those miles are probably legit.  If I was a running superstar like Paul I might think counting walking miles was cheating, but I'm no superstar.  Bethany tells me I'm too hard on myself, but I think I'm just realistic.  I'm like the Penguin.  He's okay with being slow and I am, too.  I'll worry about speed when I can regularly run without walking.

I think it counts. It's all part of the formal workout. I count running around the block with Gil, even though he stops to tinkle every 100 meters.

I agree. If you just went out for a walk, I wouldn't count it. But if you are going out for a run, and the run includes some walking, then you count the whole thing in my book. I'm glad you aren't putting your times since they are probably already faster than mine!

Stacy - if your HR stays above 60% of your max during the activity most of the time, I would count it as running. I am not sure you really want to test your max HR at this point, this is fairly painful, but 200 is probably a safe guess. You can get a more precise estimate by measuring your resting HR, walking HR, and HR after running for a minute or two. Assuming max HR of 200, if it is over 120, it counts as running.

Hey, if Sasha says it counts, it counts.

Thanks for the fun run today. I think we are going to get along just fine.

I think it is a good idea to worry about speed later. Build slowly and get miles under your belt (at least that is what I am doing- not an expert by ANY stretch of the imagination)

Still trying to figure out the Penguin though. :)

Bethany--The Penguin writes for Runner's World. Check out this link. I think I definitely qualify, or I will once I can run a race.

Stacy- You & Bethany are doing great! Its all about just getting out the door everyday (or most days...) Looking forward to meeting you girls at an upcoming race!

That Penguin link is funny. We can be the penguin partners.

I totally agree. The miles fly by when you're running with a friend. Running partners are great treasures.
