Running Accomplishments:

From 10/2009 to 12/2010, I ran a marathon each month - completing 15 marathons, 1 50k, and 1 33 mile "endurance run" -- I had a great time, learned a lot, met a bunch of fantastic people and developed some mental toughness.

My PRs at various distances:

  • 5k: 22:57 (7/11/11 - Cul-de-Sac)
  • 10k: 45:25 (5/15/11 - Carytown)
  • 15k: 1:19:03 (1/27/08 - Frostbite)
  • 10mi: 1:25:31 (8/29/10 - Annapolis)
  • 20k: 1:36:49 (8/14/11 - Leesburg)
  • Half: 1:44:18 (2/27/11 - Colonial)
  • Marathon: 3:53:53 (12/5/10 - Las Vegas)
  • 50k: 5:14:59 (11/13/10 - Rosaryville, MD)

15 states (plus DC) done: DC, DE, FL, GA, KY, MD, MI, NC, NV, OH, PA, SC, TN, VA, WA, WV

Short-Term Running Goals:

2013:

  • 8/24: Cove Island Marathon - Stamford, CT
  • 10/13: Atlantic City Marathon - Atlantic City, NJ
  • 11/16: Richmond Marathon - Richmond, VA
  • 12/14: Rocket City Marathon - Huntsville, AL

2014:

  • 11/2: New York marathon (deferred)

Long-Term Running Goals:

  • 50 States (15 + DC done)
  • Pikes Peak
  • Comrades

I'm not sure if this belongs in a Running Goals section, but I'd like to do a triathlon. I'm not much of a swimmer, so this will be a quite a stretch for me.

Personal:

I am married with two boys ages 13 and 14. They are very supportive of my running, allowing me plenty of time for training and out of town races. We like to travel and camp. I'm the only runner in the family, the boys are still looking for the sport that interests them the most.

I grew up in Maryland but now live just outside of Richmond, Virginia. I ran a few 10k races in the early 1990s (when I was in my 20s). In 2006, a friend talked me into training for a half marathon. I finished that half then continued training to run my first marathon the same year I turned 40.

My favorite marathon was the Grand Island Trail marathon off the coast of Michigan's upper penninsula. It's a beautiful course that demands a lot from runners. We travelled to the race, then spent the next two weeks on vacation in Michigan - what's not to love?

Night run, easy pace. Felt really good. Because I started after 9 at night, a run along Broad St seemed like a good idea. Light traffic made it tolerable. Nice rolling hills.

Nice run - goal: 5-6 miles at an easy pace.

Ran 9:01 AP. Warmer weather, but plenty of time to get a run in. Felt some left knee pain at mile 2.4 and some turf toe pain at mile 4 ... but neither lasted very long. Felt good, not quite a run forever day, but pretty darn good.

2x400m/2x800m/2x400m goal: 7:07 AP -- tough workout, warm weather- 82 degrees

A little turf toe pain in left foot. Good warm up. Intervals were okay until the second 800m ... then I just felt exhausted.

400m[1] - 6:59
400m[2] - 7:21
800m[1] - 7:28
800m[2] - 7:23
400m[1] - 7:17
400m[2] - 7:01

I also discovered that the Garmin will allow me to switch off the workout screen to show more interesting data ... pretty cool.

Left foot - turf toe pain at mile 1 so bad I had to stop. I headed back toward home, but it let up. I continued for 6+ miles, then stopped for some strides. I did one in shoes, then slipped into bare feet for a few in the grass - what a GREAT feeling. Absolutely no pain in my left foot ... until I put the shoes back on for the short (less than 1/2 mile) run home.

I think it's time for new shoes.

Warm up 1.8 mi with Todd prior to his half marathon. I took off heading north (the race heads south) and continued past the PA line. The trail is packed gravel/sand - nicely flat and easy on the legs. Felt good, wore new Nike Pegasus shoes for the first time.

End of day needed 4-5 miles, so I hustled out along Broad St for a quick one. Felt sluggish probably because it was after dinner which included a glass of wine. Good run, felt perky at the end, so I sprinted in for the final 0.13 miles.

Little pain in my left foot. Late night run after work and cub scouts were done.

Goal = 1x800m / 2x400m

Ran from Robius Landing Park - great location. I didn't use the Garmin well - I used one program for the warm up, one for the 800 and another for the 400s ... then forgot to start the cooldown.

Actual: 3.95 mi @ 8:54 AP.
Goal: 3-4 mi easy pace with 3-4 strides at the end.

Taped my turf toe and ran from work at lunch. Felt good with a nice easy pace. No toe pain at all. Saw a snake on the run ... the actual slithering kind, not the usual co-worker kind.

Good race. Felt like I ran pretty even splits, holding back early and pushing after mile 5. I felt very relaxed for the first half and hit the hill just the way I wanted to. At the end, I felt like I had a lot of kick on Cary Street - probably should have used it earlier.

New 10k PR (by 2:56) and new best on this course by about 15 min.

The weather was warm (65) and humid. The course is mostly flat out and back with an uphill between 3.4 and 3.6.

  3. 7:26

Great run. It was raining very lightly when I left, but I knew this was going to be 7-9 miles, so I figured it was going to be pretty wet. The rain filled the run with steady white noise. It was cool, but not cold. It rained harder, but no lightning, so I just kept going.

After two days off, it felt good to get out for a long run. I started off easy and felt like I would be able to keep pace for a very long time. Somewhere near 11 miles, I started to feel the distance. I think my form broke down some and I suspect I don't have 2 hours of core strength. Nice finish and overall, a very good day. It was close to 80 degrees, sunny, and pretty humid.
