Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!! 

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

It's such a beautiful day.  Thought I'd go for a run.  WRONG!  I jogged/walked/hobbled pathetically home.  The quads are NOT ready for any sort of running.  At one point the left ITB protested.   STINK!!!

Foam roll and stretch like crazy.  

Lost the 2 lbs I gained before UVM, darn! 

Breakfast:  Kashi cereal, yogurt, banana, milk, water, EmergenC and vitamins.

Lunch:  Strawberries, salmon, rice, brocoli, apple, more water.

Dinner:  Chicken drumsticks, spinach, rice, soup.

Snack:  Triscuits, wheat thins, almonds.

??? Will I be able to run by Friday at 5:30 pm ???  I hope I hope I hope!!!

Did a little yard work.  It's a jungle out there.  So glad the sprinklers are fixed.  If the sun comes out, I may go skinny dipping in my neighbor's pool.

My burning question today is:  What do you take/pack for WBR?  I don't have a clue.  We are not staying in any hotel.  Do people actually shower in the HS?  Do you take bug repellent, sunscreen, flyswatters, campstove or firewood? 

My only assignment is to bring two cases of bottled water.  My team said we're on our own for meals.  The last thing I want to eat is Gu.   Is there any Chick-Fil-a along the course?  I don't think I can bring my own salmon, spinach and rice.  Hmm, may be I can bring sushi.  What do you do if you get car sick or homesick? 

Please tell me what you bring/pack in your van/SUV...any other tips to make WBR fun, fun fun?  THANKS!!!!  :)  :D

Only had time to run 2.  Nothing's broken; just very rusty.   Should have done the dipping when all the neighbors were gone yesterday.  Now everyone's back from girls camp and vacation.  Sorry if I unintentionally traumatized any of you.  :) :D

What a gorgeous sunrise.  No running until 5:30 this afternoon when Temp is projected to be in the 80's.  THANKS to Metcalf's list; I know what to pack this morning. 

My teams name is Runaholics Unanimous #195.

Van 1 starts at 1pm.  Van 2 starts at 5:30pm.

WBR first leg report

The team:  was put together by two brothers (Phil and Marc, each captained a van) who have done WBR last two years with their sons and friends.  A week before race day, one of the guys blew both of his knees out.  I asked my guardian angel, Lowell, to fill in.  YES!  Hallelujah!  Lowell is the perfect man saving us with more ways than I could count.  Did I mention Lowell and I both ran UVM 6 days earlier?  I had not done any real running since then.  

The haul:

Woke up just before 3:00 am and could not go back to sleep.  Got an email from Lowell to bring my fuel belt, something about let your light so shine!  Thought I packed too much until I saw what the others in my team packed...my goodness, we looked like a bunch of refugees.  

We met Lowell in a grocery store parking lot.  I think he brought everything but the kitchen sink.  That amazing man had already put in a day's work, drove 3 hrs from Idaho, shopped and brought enough food and gear to outfit us and another team.  I noticed he had this very serious camera with him.  Are we on a vacation trip or to a race?

Exchange #6: 

We took a short cut and got to Liberty with over 2 hrs. to spare before my first leg.  I was shocked to see all the elaborately decorated vehicles and the masses of costumed "runners".  When Kelli said WBR is not really a race,  she's not kidding.  It's really a circus.   We milled around the park waiting to hear from van 1.  I was getting nervous when my expected starting time of 5:30 pm came and gone w/o hearing a word from van 1.  The temp was 87 and sunny. 

Finally I was told to line up at the chute and listen for our team # and watch for a tall guy wearing our bib # comes in.  I stood nervously wondering if I could run, if this tall guy's gonna make it.  That's when I saw Kimmie, Kathie, MrsFit, Huans32, Shimelle; and we all watched Cal came flying in.  I found out from Shimelle that their team has the same start time as mine.  O boy, I am so not in their league.

A boy from van 1 rushed over to give me my bib and within couple min. my tall guy came flying in, slapped the sweaty thing on my wrist and I was instantly transformed to racing mode...no stretching, no warm up (did I mention it was hot & sunny?) and chase after the girls ahead.

The kill:

Phil's words kept echoing in my head:  "We're not putting a stop watch to anyone.  We do keep track of road kills and we expect to finish in 25 hours."  What does that mean?  I concentrated on picking off road kills.  That's so against my nature to "kill" someone especially in a "non-race".  I bagged one within the first 0.5 mile. 

My van drove by and asked me what my pace and mileage was.  First mile split:  7:56.   Holy cow, I can't sustain that pace.  I started watching the passing vehicles and read the windows...some are pretty clever, funny, some are downright naughty.  I got a drink around mile 1.5, did I mention it was very hot and I hadn't had dinner?  I bagged another girl on the incline.  Second mile split:  8:37.   A side stitch showed up about the time the FLDS car showed up...what a sight!  Bagged another girl here and took another drink.  Third mile split:  9:05.  Hmm, I sweared I was running as fast as the first mile.  I just wanted it to be over with.  What a relief to see Brayden, a 15 yr old running his very first race of his life, all gunned up and ready to go.  I slapped that sweaty wrist thing on him and he was gone in a flash.  Last mile came in at 7:20.  I proudly reported my road kill of 5 to Phil

The relay began:

Brayden was blazing fast.  Lowell barely had enough time to change from his levis to racing shorts.  He was busy snapping pictures.  I was the water girl for Lowell's leg.   He was so fast that exchange #9 came up before we made it to the parking.  We dumped Heather off.  She had no time to use the p-o-p or set her Garmin.  We totally missed capturing their hand off.  Heather is a strong runner, a 39 yr old young mother, a Boston finisher herself.  It was fun watching her pass all these runners.  She handed off to Phil who ran thru some beautiful valleys, lakes and hills.  I had no idea where we were.  It was just gorgeous.   Our last runner #12, Paul who's Phil's 17 yr old, finished his leg before sun set.   At exchange 11, we finally met the rest of the teammates from van 1.  The tall guy's name is Jason Howe.  He too is a Boston finisher.  I started to wonder why in the world, Phil invited me to join their team.

The bed-down:

It took forever to drive thru all that traffic jam in the dark to reach East Canyon State Park where we would try to get some shut-eyes before I start running again.  There were thousands of people there, cars coming and leaving.  Four of us found a patch of grass to put down our sleeping bags next to this RV with a giant flat screen TV (hubby would be so proud) and generator going on.  It was a cool, damp, starlit night, a sleepless 2 hrs wait when we got the call to get ready to run.

WBR Leg # 19 & 31

** Continuation from yesterday's Leg # 7 report.  If you're still reading, you're nuts.**

Exchange #18

After enduring 2 hrs of obnoxious runners loud talking, 3 car alarms going off, cars arriving and leaving, I finally got out of my damp sleeping bag and went to the p-o-p.  Did I mention van 1 called to give us 1 hr. notice?  I quietly went to the car to get ready waking up sleepy Heather and Lowell.

Lowell has this brilliant idea to help me overcome the fear of running in darkness.  He wound up a strand of Christmas lights onto my fuel belt.  Brilliant!!!  I wore his reflective vest, Phil's headlamp, a jacket (had no idea what the temp was, but it was a bit cold and breezy).  Our team got in the car and drove out of the park.  The whole gang walked with this Christmas lit grandma to the chute, when all of a sudden, Phil heard #195 called.  Not knowing where the chute was I ran towards the light and saw Jason ran towards us.  Whew, almost missed the exchange there.  I started my run at 1:33 am.

Had no idea which way I was supposed to run, just chased after a blinking red light in the far distance.  Running across the road,  I saw a four legged animal darting around in the bushes.  O man, it better not be a wild fox.  It turned out to be a rabbit.  I saw quite a few of them scurried around when I ran by.  I could count about 2 blinking red lights up the mountain, so I chased after them. 

The first 0.25 mile was flat then down which immediately notified my ITB.  Man, I had not stretched or warmed up.  All that sitting in the car and laying down on the ground did not help this old body.  I passed the second blinking light who was wearing sweat shirts.  I got warmed up within 0.5 mile.  My team drove by and I took a drink while I walked.  First 2 miles splits came in at 9:13, 10:25.  Pretty soon my eyes got adjusted to running in the dark.  I actually quite like it.  If it weren't for the passing cars, I would have been a little concerned about getting lost.  I passed two more blinking lights.  I shed my sweaty jacket and handed to my team.  It was fun to have all these other teams cheering me.  Other than walking while I drank, I ran the entire uphill.  Mile 4 and 5 splits:  11:54, 10:24.  WOOHOO!!!  THAT WAS FUN!!!  The finish was made sweet when Lowell came and ran with me.  He asked if I could hear cows.  Is that what that was?  I thought it was the guy I passed.  Total number of road kills on this leg was 5 which were all that were running ahead of me.  I failed to catch one more just before Lowell ran towards me.

Everyone on our team ran long stretches on this leg in the dark.  Lowell found a running partner and paced her to a happy finish.  Someone must have forgotten to send him the memo about road kills.  We felt bad that we totally missed Heather after her mile 4 drink.  We thought she had gone ahead while she actually took a potty break.   That poor girl ran 7.7 miles with one drink and tummy issue.

Phil's leg started at the break of dawn.  It was so pretty to watch the sunrise over Wanship.  I need to come back and visit these part of Utah again.

Exchange #31

After everyone in our van was done running, we drove from Morgan to Heber where the endless restless wait began.  Heather and I had hoped to shower and change but saw none such facility.   She went off towards the p-o-p while I ate some breakfast.  While standing in the p-o-p, Kelli saw me.  She walked me to the building that houses real bathrooms with hot running water.  YAY!!!  It was so GOOD to see her.   RAD called and found us.  She had a much better night in a "mansion" than us.  It was fun visiting with her a bit.  We tried to nap unsuccessfully while waiting for my turn to run. 

At the chute I saw Kodi (Mel) and some bloggers.  I must have looked like death warmed over.  I was so tired!  The sky was partly cloudy and the sun peeked out when I took the "baton" from Jason at 11:02 am.  I just wanted to get this leg over with so I ran as fast as my tired old body let me.  I heard all these passing cars cheering me.  One car might have been from my Stake.  Each time I heard my name cheered while passing runners, I would yell out the number (of road kills).  I think that was a naughty thing to do.  I only did it twice.  I passed a total of 27 road kills.  My splits were:  8:32, 8:40, 8:09, 8:37, 8:40.  WOOHOO!  THAT WAS FUN!!!!  Once again, the sweetest moment came when Lowell ran a little with me to the chute.  I think I saw Tyler there. Brayden's mom and dad were there to cheer him.  What great parents to drive all the way to Midway to witness Brayden's first race finish.

No time to stretch or waste, we had to get the next two brave runners, Lowell and Heather to run up that monstrous mountain in the rain.  The winding narrow road was wet and muddy.  Lowell marched up like a brave warrior passing some young bucks.  He again paced another girl.  I saw Metcalf finished her leg at the exchange.  I was so proud of her.  Lowell and I walked for quite a stretch waiting for our car to drive up.  Heather was running strong and even paced a 13 yr old boy.  I am so proud of my team.  It was fun watching Phil ran the portion of the course where my hubby would ski in the winter.

The finish:

There must have been thousands of cars at the finish parking lot.  What a mess...what a maze to get in and out.  We made it there in the nick of time to watch young Paul flew down the hill, we chased after him.  I think we could have easily pulled a muscle tear doing that.  We finished in 26 hours 41 minutes and 24 seconds, taking 12th in the Open Male and 24th overall.

The afterthoughts:

My favorites:

1.  Having Lowell there.

2.  The beautiful mountains, valleys, lakes and streams of the Wasatch Back.

3.  The commadarie of the teammates.

4.  Watching the exuberance of youth.

5.  The actual running part.  Wish I had more miles to run.

The disappointments:

1.  Roudy people.

2.  The long long long wait between legs.

3.  The dangerous and congestive traffic.

4.  No sleep and lack of appetite.
