Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

I'm afraid 11 days of cross training on elliptical that is too big for me with one boot on has done more damage than good.  My left biceps femoris and the ligament proximal to the knee are inflamed.  It was hurting fierce last night.  Being an idiot, instead of taking a rest day, I got back on the thing hoping it was just a fluke!

70 min elliptical without the boot.

  • 15 min incline 35 resist 3
  • 15 min reverse incline 20 resist 2
  • 15 min incline 30 resist 3
  • 25 min incline 20 resist 2

70 min TM.   Felt the pain more while walking than running...what the?  Abandoned the initial plan of walking @6 incline and just selected two pre-programed workouts.

  •   #1 ~ 30 min (max incline 6, max speed 6mph) 2.09 miles
  •   #2 ~ 40 min (max incline 10, max speed 4.5mph) 2.53 miles

Foam roll and stretch.

Paint the wall panel in the living/family room.

what the heck?!? I'm sorry Smooth. I'm glad the foot is feeling better. Those darn imbalances from walking with that dumb boot are impossible! Looks like things are still going well though - lots of miles :)

Oh SSF~

I am so sorry. What can I do for you? Sometimes it is so hard to figure out what the best plan is when you are injured. Please please please try not to fret about Boston and push yourself too hard. As you know injuries take energy and substance to heal ... we want your energy and substance to go towards healing your foot ... not new injuries! ;)

I love you. Be smart! It is okay to just take a few days off and sleep a lot!! :)

Seriously, is there anything I can do for you?

From Smooth on Fri, Mar 02, 2012 at 17:57:55 from 174.27.219.252

RAD ~ I just wish I was 2" taller, things are made for average height folks, not midgets like me! Sigh!

SSF ~ you are so right...you've been there and speak with wisdom and experience! I don't know what to do! I have a hard time sleeping unless I've had a good workout! Right now I feel like my body is just out of whack!

Thanks for your concern and support! Your being there and having your understanding means so much! Love you!

From Teena Marie on Fri, Mar 02, 2012 at 18:20:13 from 174.27.198.157

I know it is so hard and frustrating, SSF. I have been there and there are definitely good and bad days. Really, the best way to treat an out of whack body (in my opinion) is to address first things first: SLEEP AND NUTRITION!! I know this sounds crazy, but I have had to do a little meditation (and given myself a new mantra) lately to help me sleep better. I got to the point of being so stressed out about school, running, family, church, etc. that I could not sleep as well. My mind would just race unbelievably. For me the meditation and new mantra helped considerably. I have even thought about changing my blog title to the new mantra but didn't want it to sound wrong. For me the mantra is this, "Ain't no thang." (You have to say "thaaaayng" ... it sounds cooler!! ;)) Sounds funny but it works for me ... I say it probably a dozen times a day when I start feeling stressed. To me it means: whatever I am dealing with, whatever is stressing me out, is really quite inconsequential in the big picture. I will get through it like everything else. :) :) :)

SSF, your stress fracture is frustrating. I am not trying to downplay that. And when you don't feel good and can't exercise the way you want everything else seems harder as well. BUT ... you are AMAZING ... and yes, you will get through this like you get through everything else ... with style and class. :) :) :)

I love you. You can do this. Your body is going through a lot right now. Be nice to yourself. LLL LLL LLL LLL. :) :) :)

From Smooth on Fri, Mar 02, 2012 at 18:36:00 from 174.27.219.252

SSF ~ thanks! Ain't no thaaayng! Speaking of nutrition...it's been awful...I have gained so much weight that it's depressing...a vicious cycle!

K, deep breathing...this will past...keep on smiling! love you and thanks!

Hey Ms. Smooth - Take a chill pill. Get relaxed and get well. Quit pushing yourself so hard to get better and let it happen. Were still just under 7 weeks (43 days) from Boston, plenty of time for those stress fractures to heal. Like Teena said, Get your sleep and get your nutrition in order. Your body heals at it's best when sleeping and it heals best when supplied with the best building blocks of nutrition. Load up on the calcium, Magnesium, zinc and amino (complete) acids.

OH, dang it!!! That biceps f....whatever the heck it is called, really hurts!! Take care of yourself and do not get more injured! You are such a talented and strong runner, no worries! heal up and all will be wll again. And hopefully soon!

Smooth...I'm so so so sorry! Injuries are so frustrating! We go through all the *grieving* cycles...denial, anger, depressions, acceptance. We love this darn sport so much that we just can't let it go. I know you are smart and will do what is safe! Onward and upward!

From Nancy on Sun, Mar 04, 2012 at 08:06:54 from 76.23.21.118

I'm sorry. It is hard enough to stay in shape when you are not injured, but twice as hard when you are. Hang in there and it will get better.

From Bec on Sun, Mar 04, 2012 at 19:04:03 from 68.206.133.141

I'm sorry Smooth. Please be careful. I wish things were going a little better for you. :(

From Smooth on Mon, Mar 05, 2012 at 12:07:47 from 174.27.219.252

Thank you everybody for your kind concern and support. Your words meant so much to me. It really lifted my spirit to know I can *cry* a little on the blog and have understanding friends such as you who care! I will heal. I'll just take one day at a time! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! :)
