Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

What a gorgeous morning!  Tempo day (2 EZ 3 @ 8:13, 1 EZ).  Here goes:

Mile 1 ~  9:29  (warm up mile felt good, no lead legs.)

Mile 2 ~  8:48  (imagine how it would feel at the start of the marathon.)

Mile 3 ~  7:50  (comfortably hard effort.)

Mile 4 ~  8:00  (slight incline the first 0.5, kept steady effort.)

Mile 5 ~  7:57   (had to stay focus to not get lazy, got a side-stitch for about 1 min.)

Mile 6 ~  8:39 (was surprised at how nice this pace felt.)

0.5 mile (4:19) ~  8:39 (imagine keeping a mp at the last stretch w/ the finish clock ticking...)

6.5 miles in 55:05.  AP: 8:28.  Very pleased with this last tempo run!

Hope I don't get sick babysitting this morning...such cute kids!

Awesome run, Smoothie!!! You are getting faster and faster. Keep it up!!!

From leslie peterson on Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 14:36:43 from 76.23.61.78

Nice run today, as always! Yes, do not let those babies get you sick!!!

From leslie peterson on Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 14:37:22 from 76.23.61.78

They are not your grandkids right? Yours are all out of state if I remember right.

From Smooth on Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 14:59:20 from 97.117.81.161

Dale ~ THANKS! I love tempo runs. Made me feel fast and it's done. 3 more runs then we're gonna have the 26.2 fun one! WooHoo!

Leslie ~ They're not my grandkids. They are Olga's. She's from Mexico, not member of the LDS church. She's so devoted to her two children. She's expecting her third one in Oct. We used to take turn cooking lunch once a month in each other's home. Now we go out to eat. Her husband is caucasion...her kids are gorgeous. The multi-cultural kids are so beautiful. You'll see when Paul and Julie have kids.

That is so cool that you are babysitting for such a good cause. Stay healthy, I know you know this is important. After reading about your workout today, you should be expecting to PR, right?

From Bec on Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 16:53:25 from 67.177.35.60

Are you considering the Valley of Fire marathon? Let me know. I kind of want to do another marathon this year.

From Huans32 on Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 17:16:03 from 138.64.2.76

Wow Smooth. That is one of the tougher tempo workouts speed wise. They are like your 10k paces. And you knocked that out of the park. Maybe that MP is to slow for you.:) Keep charlie away and I am sure you will PR. Very strong workout.

Keep washing the hands. :)

From Kathie on Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 18:27:02 from 63.248.105.188

I know what you mean about getting sick, I when VT today and my partners daughter was sick. I have washed my hands a hundred times!

Nice run...you are so fast!

From Cal on Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 18:32:39 from 66.133.117.3

Great running once again, Smooth. You're very well prepared for your goal time (and beyond...)

Bec ~ I WAS going to run VOF. I know the Race Director. But Marianne (Eric's wife) and Emi are coming to Utah that day. So I will have to pass. I am eyeing Hoover Dam Marathon (30 min from Las Vegas). It's on Halloween...plus Fast Sunday so I won't have Ward Conf. or Primary Sac. Presentation to go to.

VOF is a hilly course, but should be fun.

Mark ~ I was glad that I only had to run 3 at that 10K pace. Don't think I could hang on for another mile. I'm hoping my mp is 9:00 or less. Yes, keeping my fingers crossed that charlie horse stays away. I'm hoping for cool temp. I think I do better when it's cool.

Paul ~ I must have washed my hands every 5 minutes.

Kathie ~ Teena's kids are sick today. We're germ-phobic big time right now. Fast is relative. I hope I can keep up with you and Kimmy.

Cal ~ THANKS! You think so? I'm still very scared of my old demon, the charlie horse.

Smooth, did you know about the new Marathon in Misquite in Nov? I think Mammoth is putting it on, have you heard any thing good about Mammoth? Seems like I heard somewhere that they do a good job, they are also doing a half and a 10K, sounds like a nice pre-winter run to me. I am thinking about that one, alittle running, a little spa-ing, a little buffet eating, and alittle end of the year lounging by the pool, and oh yeah, the penny slots!!

From Bec on Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 20:04:52 from 67.177.35.60

If you need a friend for that marathon, let me know! I really want to do another one before the year is over. I don't want to care about time, I just want to complete one.

From Bec on Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 20:05:49 from 67.177.35.60

VOF marathon looks a little scary! Have you seen the course map with the 1,000 feet of elevation climb? YIKES!

From Smooth on Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 22:26:19 from 97.117.81.161

Leslie ~ Yes, the Mesquite Tri State Marathon is on the same day as the Valley of Fire Marathon. My friend who's the RD of VOF was NOT very happy about that. Anyway, Mesquite sounds like fun, knock yourself out...you deserve an end of the year party. I do remember Karen Boothe running VOF last year.

Bec ~ Yes, I have seen the elevation profile. JeffC (on this blog) and some of my other friends have run it. I was going to run it last year; but it was on the same day as the BYU vs Utah game and we had tickets at the Rice Eccles U Box. Larry was co-host for that box so I couldn't run it. And this year I was hoping to run it; but I rather stay home and see my grandbaby.

I am pretty sure I will run Hoover Dam. I'm talking my friend, Lowell, to run it. I will let you know when I sign up.

From Teena on Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 22:33:32 from 67.177.20.13

Oh Smooth!!!

You are so so so stinkin' wonderful!!!

So ... you think you can get Lowell to run Hoover, huh?

I talked to Ry. He said that he could get the kids ready for Halloween as long as I am home in time for trick or treating. I don't want to miss that!!!

Then again ... who knows if I will even be able to walk for a good month after SGM.

I'll start looking at airfare!

Love you!!!

From Smooth on Fri, Sep 25, 2009 at 12:22:58 from 97.117.81.161

Teena ~ Lowell already emailed some questions to Joyce (the RD of Hoover). He thinks he can swing it. It's a low key race with a HALF as well. Course is on the Mojave Desert, no shade and windy. But we get to see some historic trail and the Dam...run/walk with friends. It's about building memories. LOVE YOU!
