Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Did NOT sleep a wink!  Tried counting sheep, hubby's audible heart beats (he has artificial valves), blessings....yoga breathing....nothing worked.  Kept replaying the scene of my son throwing up on the sideline at the football game last night.  Poor thing, he played his heart out.  Kept thinking & worrying about my children.  Finally jumped out of bed at 4am w/ Mr. moon bright in the night sky.  Showered and ate breakfast.  Tummy was not feeling well.  Kissed hubby goodbye and headed over to Wendy's house for our ride down to Spanish Fork.

The 8 of us (John, Wendy, Diane, Carolyn, Mary, Katie, Beth and I) chatted excitedly for the 45 min drive.  Stephanie met us at the park at 6:15.  We headed to registration table and saw two sleeping bags under a tree.  Felt bad that we might have woken up its occupants who turned out to be MichelleL's cute little boys.  Michelle, the WONDERFUL volunteer was there VERY early already busy helping.   SO VERY EXCITED to see her, the course record holder and her bright smile.  It started to rain.  Temp is warmer than last year.  Gonna be a hot and humid race!

So HAPPY to see Kathie and Kimmy, Maynard and Running Utes; really missed Teena.  We headed to the start and stood behind 3 rows of speedsters.  Thought I would do what Huans32 suggested: run the first half at AP 9:19 (FIRST schedule pace for today's run) and 2nd half at AP 9:09 OR just hang with Kathie and Kimmy for as long as I could.

Kathie, Kimmy Smooth & Maynard before the start.  Aren't the sisters' WBR shirts clever?

The first 3 miles is a gradual incline with a small hill around mile 3.5; then level out till about mile 5.5 and began an uphill loop to mile 6.  The loop meets back down to the course at mile 7.5 then the gradual decline from mile 9 to the finish; not a fast course.

Mile 1 -  8:23 (Started out too fast, saw hubby at the first turn, so sweet!)

Mile 2 -  8:32 (Still a bit fast, trying to do the tangent on the winding River Bottom Rd.)

Mile 3 -  8:41 (Could feel the incline, got into a good rhythm, passed TRI dude and Camelpak Girl.  Gotta love the smell of the country, aka skunks, cows, horses.)

Mile 4 -  9:08 (First hill, got passed by TRI dude and Camelpak Girl and Heavybreather who annoyingly "drafted" off me.  There was a slight breezy headwind which actually felt wonderful.  The view of the mountains is gorgeous!)

Mile 5 -  8:32 (Re-passed TRi dude and Camelpak Girl.  We chatted a bit about our recent races & paces.  Saw TylerS running w/ someone on the opposite side.  Cheered him 'cause I thought he was the front runner/winner.  Took gel and got water from none other than our very own, KellieS.  I couldn't talk to her as I was afraid I would choke on the water.  It was so good to see you and your smiling face, Kellie!)

Mile 6 -  9:31 (Dropped TRI dude for good, Camelpak Girl hung w/ me.  Kept the effort even going up this hill.  At mile 6.5 my time was 58:xx.  Hey!  I may finish this thing under 1:57 if charlie horse stays away.)

Mile 7 - 8:58 (Concentrated on downhill form.  Last year at this point, shin cramps started to show up and I had to sing to stiffle the fear of charlie.  NOT this year, hallelujah!)

Mile 8 - 8:36 (Camelpak girl passed me as I stopped at the aid station. )

Mile 9 - 8:27 (Passed lotsa folks here including Heavybreather, YES!)

Mile 10 - 8:42 (Figured if I kept pace at 8:45 I could finish this thing under 1:55.)

Mile 11 - 8:41 (Trying to run the tangent.   Saw TylerS again running the other direction with encouraging words that mile 12 is just around the corner...sure enough!)

Mile 12 - 8:28 (Legs feeling good, no cramps, YAY!  Took a small cup of water.  Realized I could finish under 1:54 if I kept the pace.)

Mile 13 - 8:12 (Legs still feeling great.  Everyone including me was pouring it on.)

At the home stretch w/ about 0.2 mile to go, I saw MichelleL cheering enthusiastically.  Then I heard her yell, TAKE THOSE GIRLS!  There were 4 girls ahead.  I could hear Michelle yelled, practice your kick to the finish!  She must be running right behind me.   Her awesomeness must have transferred over to me, I passed all the girls with Michelle cheering the whole way.  I kicked it in to the finish with the clock barely turning from 1:52:59 to 1:53:00.  Darn it!  Should have sprinted for that one second!  WOOHOO!  What a rush!  THANKS Michelle for helping me with a strong finish!

Michelle is DA BEST friend, cheerleader, athletic supporter, race volunteer EVER!!!

I either did a wonderful job with the tangent or the course is short.  Garmin showed mileage at 13:03.  O well, I'll take it including the 2nd AG medal.  Didn't win any raffle prize.  But 3 from our company of 9 won prizes.  Oh, Kathie's & Kimmy's mom won a Coolpix camera, SWEET!  It was so nice to see KarinR (josse's mom) who also took 2nd in her AG and won a prize.  Her hubby had knee surgery in April and won his AG in the 5k...very COOL!!!  I really like this home town race put on by the SF Running Club!  May have to make it a yearly event.

Me and 4 of the 8 ladies: Wendy, Carolyn (her 1st Half), Mary, Diane (her 1st) at the finish.  Good job, girls!

BYU just beat Oklahoma 14-13!!! WOOOHOOOOO!!!!

What a race!! GREAT JOB Smooth. And no sleep? You were so strong throughout and I loved that Michelle was there for you :D.

Right on, Smoothie!!! Wow, youi really did awesome at this race. Way to go on 2nd place in your age group. Wish I could have been there to run it or cheer you all on. Sounds like a really fun race and raffle. Too bad you didn't win me the ipod. :)

From Smooth on Sat, Sep 05, 2009 at 16:18:59 from 71.36.64.93

Julie ~ THANKS! I am very pleased that I ran this so close to my 1/2 marathon pace. I just need to be smart and stay healthy the next few weeks. Wish you ran this one. You would have taken name again!

Dale ~ Thanks! It was a good race. I didn't expect to race it but felt good enough to go for it. Sorry I didn't win you the ipod. I NEVER win anything!

From Kelli on Sat, Sep 05, 2009 at 16:35:48 from 71.219.97.42

What an awesome race SMOOTH!!! And fun to have fellow runners be the aide station volunteers.

Sorry about your son! That is awful. Was he sick or did he just play too much of the game or what?

If it makes you feel any better, i was on the other side of the mountain awake with you. BAD NIGHT!

Have a great weekend!

Oh Smooth!!! You are just the best!!! I kept thinking about how fun last year's Spanish Fork Half was, and missed you all terribly. I am so glad that you had another wonderful year there!!

Check out your time!!! You did AWESOME!!!! You are so ready for SGM.

I love you so much. I tried to call, but you must have been busy. :)

Hope you are having a fantastic Saturday!!!

great race today smooth! so fun reading your report. way to kick it in hard at the end. hope you get more sleep tonight!

From MichelleL on Sat, Sep 05, 2009 at 18:08:08 from 71.219.40.89

Smooth--you did so awesome! I was so proud of your finish. You were so responsive. These four ladies were strung out, so Smooth had to pick them off one by one, a solid 1/4 mile of kick. I did decide to run behind you and keep yelling. It was fun!

If your prior best 1/2 was the Provo 1/2 in 1:51, then this is a PR effort. I think these races are 4 minutes apart in difficulty for a 1:50 runner. Congrats!

From MarcE on Sat, Sep 05, 2009 at 18:23:29 from 99.163.101.40

Way to go, Smoooth!! Excellent splits...obviously you didn't run hard enough in the beginning, if you 1) could do math at mile 11 to figure out what finish time you might get, and 2) ran mile 13 as the fastest mile! ;) Sleep is over-rated. And hurray for Mr Smooth for giving you that emotional boost at the start. Great race!!!!

Smooth it is always fun to see you. Great report...I felt like I was there...Oh wait a minute I WAS THERE!!! I can't believe how you kicked some major bootie on those up hills. I am so glad Charlie didn't come around. Oh by the way, my mom won a Cool Pix Camera. She is one lucky girl.

Fantastic race Smooth. You were really flying there and way to get those girls at the end. That is awesome.

From AmberG on Sat, Sep 05, 2009 at 20:30:55 from 209.33.225.76

Wahoo! You go WOMAN!! What a nice race and speedy fast finish, , , that must have been so exhilarating at the end to push hard and conquer! . . . well, and pass those 4 girls :)

Thanks for sharing the pics too, , , always fun to see! You rocked it Smooth!!! :)

From Bec on Sat, Sep 05, 2009 at 21:55:29 from 67.177.35.60

Smooth, you are wonderful if you didn't know. This half looks so exciting because you were there throwing the party that just naturally follows you around. You look so stinkin' cute in that Boston outfit.

From Bec on Sat, Sep 05, 2009 at 21:56:03 from 67.177.35.60

Great time by the way. Way to go being 2nd in AD.

From Huans32 on Sat, Sep 05, 2009 at 22:58:10 from 67.182.192.209

WOW!!! AWESOME JOB!!! You did great. Look at those splits. And no charlie horses. Got to love it. You ran a smart and fast race.

From Smooth on Sat, Sep 05, 2009 at 23:54:17 from 71.36.78.244

Kelli ~ Steven tackled this kid who fell hard onto his stomach/chest. I didn't see it as it happened on the other team's sideline. But I knew something was wrong when I saw him running towards our sideline with his helmet off and immediately upchucked over and over on the side. He took a swig of gatorade and ran out for the next play. He played every single play. I'm praying that he won't get injured. We're the underdog and it's just so not worth it. He's such a good kid and leader.

Oh, I'm going to sleep good tonight.

Teena ~ I kept thinking about you and pointed out the place to Larry, Magleby, where Lowell treated us to breakfast. It was such a fun memory. I wish you were there. I miss you. When will I see you again? LLL LLL LLL

allie ~ I'm gonna sleep in tomorrow. You had an awesome modified BW today! Hope you're having a relaxing evening.

Marc ~ I'm still learning how to pace myself. I kept thinking Kathie and Kimmy are going to pass me any min. The pace felt comfortable and really didn't push until the last mile.

Kimmy ~ I think having run PC and Provo Canyon uphill the last two Saturdays gave me that mental boost. It was so so so fun to see you and Kathie and your mom. Yes, she is the LUCKY girl.

But Teena would say that you have the lucky bib#.

jun ~ I wouldn't have thought of passing those girls if Michelle didn't "encourage" me to. Funny how the body would response to a loving friend's voice. She's AWESOME! The credit goes to her! I have to admit though that it felt good to pick them off one by one. Made the finish so much sweeter!

Amber ~ You of all people know the exhilaration of passing people at the end. You do it so naturally at every race; making you a true winner!

Bec ~ I thought about you running this same race last year on the course where I'd saw you pass and where you came back to run for some more and chatted with me and Wendy. How fast one year has passed and what a great running year you've had.

Mark ~ I kept thinking, gotta run this good so I won't disappoint Mark! How was your 15 miler today? Going over to your blog now!

From RAD on Sun, Sep 06, 2009 at 00:11:22 from 76.27.12.70
