Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Got back to the hotel at 9:30 last night after a nice dinner at Terry's.  Got my race gear ready, took a Tylenol PM and hit the sack around 10:30.  Woke up at 4:15 before the alarm.  Had a banana, yogurt, instant oatmeal, EmergenC and gatorade.  Went down to the lobby at 5:40 to meet up with Lowell's neighbor, Bill who shuttled us (Lowell, Terry, Sam, Kristen and Amy) to the start.  The ride only took 10 min.  Lowell and I helped a guy get onto his handcyle and pushed another guy up to the start.  We made a quick trip to the pop before dropping off our bags.  Temp was in the low 40s so Lowell convinced me to put on the long sleeve race shirt, gloves and carried my inhaler and cell phone but I forgot the gu.

We started near the back of the pack by the 4:30 pace group.  Since it was a training run, I have no time goal other than to help Lowell gets his BQ time of 4:15.  Had so much fun greeting fellow runners as we ran nice and easy on a beautiful morning in gorgeous mountain scenery.  First hill came just before mile 7 on an out-n-back.  SO fun cheering those ahead of us as they're running down and encourage those behind as they're running up! :)  Since I forgot my gu, I took a twizzler at the turn around and ate a tootsie roll at mile 9.  Had to stop and wait for the pop at mile 11 (a bit overhydrated! :D)

Got to the half where a guy at the timing mat said our time was 2:02.  I never looked at my watch as it was covered by the sleeve.  Hubby was waiting and cheering near the half so we stopped to shed our l/s shirts and posted for pictures.  I also took couple puff of the inhaler.

Once we were out of the hills into Inkom, the sun was in our back and a headwind started to whip up on the straight stretch along the old highway (glad I took the inhaler).  Started to pass lots of half-marathoners and gave them cheers.

Around mile 17ish, Lowell talked to yet another girl.  I looked down at my watch for the first time and saw that our pace has drifted to the high 9s.  So I picked up the pace a tad bit and fixed my eye on Ben who has been leap frogging with us since mile 3.  Ben was carrying his own fuel/fluid so he never stopped at the aid station.  It was a good move as Ben is a big fella and I could draft off him a little bit.  We ran side by side till mile 21, the big hill where Ben slowed some.  Felt good that I kept a steady effort and did not walk any of the uphills.

I stopped at every aid station to drink and sample their offerings of candy and gu.  I turned to look for Lowell who had gotten further and further behind.  At mile 23 I asked Ben what his goal was.  He said he'd like to finish around 4:20.  I looked at my watch for the third time and realized even if we ran at a 10mm pace we could easily finish under 4:15.  So I told him to stay with me hoping Lowell would chase after us as Ben has a red shirt on.

For the last 5K, I kept repeating in my head my mantra:  "smooth, fast, strong", and with each mile marker told my self:  "just 20 more min...10 more...only 5 more."  I kept waiting for the dreaded cramps which usually comes during the last mile but it NEVER came!!! :)  The last 0.39 mile (I didn't do the tangent well) split was 8:28!!!  Ben came in a min. after me.  After getting my medal and chocolate milk, I walked back to wait for Lowell.  He finished in 4:15:06.  YES!!! He got his BQ!!!! :) :) :)

We lined up for their famous Idaho baked potato, BBQ pork sandwitch and ice cream bars.  I didn't stay for the award ceremony as I had to head back to the hotel to shower before the 12:30 check out.  But did see Rob Murphy get his award and congratulated him!  It was a fun fun fun day and great training run!!!

Terry, Lowell, Smooth and Sam.

What a great race and strong finish with NO cramping -yay!!! Nice work Smooth, and a fun time to boot. Love the pics, looks fun enough to almost want to join you next year :) Congrats to Lowell for that BQ!

I might have to do this one, too. Sounds like fun.

You sure know how to make a marathon fun. I don't think I've ever had fun before. Maybe I should try it sometime.

Congratulations on a great "training run". You should definitely count that one, a very solid day. And nice splits on the last one, you must have negative split the whole thing? Good job.

Yahoo, another awesome Marathon adventure!! I am curious to know whether you think UVM or Pokie is easier/harder? Congrats on 2nd AG my friend : D.

You were there?!? Wish I had seen you. Your pics are so cute and ou look loke your having a GREAT time! Congrats~ glad you had FUN!

From Smooth on Wed, Sep 07, 2011 at 00:17:42 from 174.27.216.165

JulieC ~ That is an excellent question! Both marathons have similar start and finish elevation. I would say Pocatello's first half is definitely easier than UVM's first half. The elevation drop is much more gradual at Pokey and only one slight uphill at mile 7. Whereas UVM has a lot more uphills thru Walhsburg and in Provo canyon. Pocatello's second half has a few rollers and a good size hill at mile 21 whereas UVM is pretty much downhill after mile 18. I think a strong downhill runner will do better at UVM.

From Smooth on Wed, Sep 07, 2011 at 00:39:55 from 174.27.216.165

Dale ~ Thanks! Yah, it'd be fun to run an entire marathon together. I have yet to do that with Lowell. I think he talks too much and lag behind at the end of the marathon.

Rachel ~ Anytime I finish a marathon without cramps is success! You would've loved running Pokey with us. It's a small field much like Park City. But they start their half 1hr 45 min after the full. So it's fun for the fast marathoners to beat the half start and receive their cheer. As for middle of the pack marathoners, it's super fun to pass the halfers.

The RD does a great job, the schwag is awesome, the volunteers are super nice, well stocked aid stations, beautiful scenery the first half. And they feed you a real meal at the finish.

Rob ~ you speedsters have FUN in a different way! We middle of the packers *dance and prance and laugh* our way thru a marathon! :)

Flat ~ It was not negative splits, pretty hard to do for a downhill first half. I ran the first half in 2:02, second half in 2:04. I ran UVM real close to even split.

Kelli ~ Thanks! This is a 2 min course PR from last year where I took 1st and this year got beat by another speedy old lady. Just never know who shows up. But any day where you can run pain or cramps free with great friends and good fun trumps PR or AG placement in my book! :)

Hi there Mac! Wish I had time to go look for you and Josse and the two Jeffs and Rob at the finish. There sure was a good showing from the FRBs. CONGRATZ on taking podium! You are SO AWESOMELY FAST!!!! :)

What a great race. You are just so mentally tough. I'm glad you got through the headwind, and didn't cramp up. Sounds like you had a great race, and a great time! XO
