Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

It was beautiful out today, wasn't it?

Nice workout - what is swpooling?

From Smooth on Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 16:55:43 from 71.36.81.143

Swpooling is me pretending to swim in my neighbor's pool. I can make it across the pool with one breath; then I have to stand up to catch my breath. I really need to take swimming lesson.

From Julie on Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 17:19:44 from 174.23.55.58

I need to take some swimming lessons too. 1 hour sounds tough. It sounds like a you had a great workout today. Nice job.

From Rhett on Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 17:39:22 from 74.36.34.147

Swpooling sounds great! Wish we had your weather.

From Bec on Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 17:42:35 from 67.177.35.60

You are too funny Smooth. Swpooling? That is great! I would love to teach how I pretend to swim sometime. Get some goggles if you don't have them already, they really help. Nice work with your relaxing run.

From allie on Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 19:10:16 from 208.110.151.113

great run today. i agree about the beautiful morning. i call my version of swimming swterrifiedofwaterdrowning.

From Smooth on Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 19:13:25 from 71.36.81.143

Allie, LOVE IT!!! I shall call it swterrifiedofwaterdrowning from now on. SWTOFD for short!

From RAD on Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 19:34:57 from 76.27.12.70

lol! I love how although you're SWTOFD you still work so hard at cross training and working on your ITB. Oh, and my PT told me last week that if every runner would do the side to side stepping with a band around your feet 2X a week that he would see 90% less injuries! That convinced me... it's on my daily list now. Since I noticed your doing clam shells for the ITB you may want to add the band.

From leslie peterson on Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 19:35:18 from 76.23.61.78

I enjoyed the cooler weather too!

Lucky you to have a neighbor with a pool! That sounds fun!

From Smooth on Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 23:29:33 from 71.32.233.46

K, Bec & RAD,

Adding on my shopping list: goggles and band. Do you have any recommendation i.e. length, size and where to get them?

THANKS!

LOL if you find someone to help with your swimming let me know. I need to learn too.:) Great job on your run and swim.

This whole string of comments has made my day. You guys are FUNNY!!! I think we should have a pool party so I can show off and beat you all at something :)

From allie on Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 14:00:32 from 208.110.151.113

marion - pool party = great idea. you can show us the ropes and reassure us that swimming is a fun activity. "dont be afraid...the water is your friend...you won't get sucked down the drain"

From marion on Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 17:12:05 from 71.219.52.63

I am a firm believer that once a person is afraid of the water, it takes a lot of work to get over it :( I am also a firm believer that if YOU can win a marathon, you can GET OVER IT!!! :D If you can run a marathon, you can GET OVER IT! :D Just think of the water as soft and loving. It holds you up. It cools you off. THE DRAIN IS VERY LITTLE!!! YOU CANNOT FIT! Well, come to think of it, y'all are VERY little, I CANNOT FIT!! ;) You might fit ;)

xoxoxoxoxoxoxo :D

From Rhett on Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 17:33:29 from 74.36.34.147

Marion, that post cracked me up. Smooth, if my son who just turned 3 can swim laps in the pool, so can you. Just believe what Marion said. It is 99% mental. Smooth, you can do anything you set your heart to do. You are one of the strongest, most amazing women I've ever met.

From marion on Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 17:37:22 from 71.219.52.63

Rhett is right ladies!

hey- you know how swimming freaks you out and it is foreign to you? Well, that is how running is to me. I am a fish out of water, literally ;)

From Smooth on Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 17:47:03 from 71.36.74.201

Rhett,

I'm not afraid of water when it's controlled by me, like drinking it, taking a shower in it, washing dirt off with it. DROWNING by water terrifies me!!! I don't have gills, I don't have fins, I don't have scales. My lungs only like oxygenated air...NOT water!

Marion,

You are so funny!!! I now sympathize you with running. But the big difference is running will NOT kill you, but drowning by pretending to swim WILL!!!

Oh, I'm all for a pool party...as long as I don't have to swim, just party.

From marion on Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 18:09:57 from 71.219.52.63

Smooth- I am quite sure that for the most part, water will not kill me. My kids are another story- water and them, SCARES me!

I am still quite sure that running might kill me :) Every twinge in an arm might be a heart attack. Every time I run a 5k, I am quite sure that I will explode and die right on the spot, seriously. Speed work feels the same way. The anxiety before races for me, must be what it's like for you, thinking about swimming laps for an hour in a deep pool.

From Smooth on Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 18:30:47 from 71.36.74.201

Marion,

I don't like 5Ks...they are painful...triggering the near death neurons in our brains. But OH!, the rush afterward is SO SO AWESOME!!! Trust me you WILL NOT DIE from running fast. Just tell yourself to EMBRACE the PAIN, it will be over before you know it and you feel SO WONDERFUL when it's done!

Oh, I get HUMONGOUS anxiety, knots in the tummy before races. It's like "stage fright"! ALL runners DO!!! Ask Allie, the multi-marathon winner! That's the adrenaline rushing thru ya! Embrace the Anxiety!

From allie on Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 19:04:05 from 208.110.151.113

yes, race anxiety is good. that's what gets you moving!! i was so nervous last week that i thought i was having a panic attack...could not get my HR down, mouth was all dry, stomach was doing flips. i thought about just running the other direction and skipping the race entirely! but as smooth said - you EMBRACE it, and use the adrenaline to your advantage. like cody draper's blog says: "running won't kill you, you'll pass out first!" ;)

now, the swimming anxiety is a different anxiety...if i go under water, chances are someone will shut the pool cover on me and i will be trapped in there---forever! then the drain would really go to work. :)

but then i would remember that the water is "soft and loving" and i would find a way to survive.

oh this is a great therapy session. smooth and marion curing all fears!
