Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

The legs felt a little better today.  Tried a recovery run.  Felt pain the entire way, more on the left quads just above the knee.  STINK!  Will stretch, roll and ice today.

Seems like this is a recurring theme right before marathons for you. You've become a pro at getting through these things and then having a great race. I'm sure this time around will be the same. Keep up all that stretching, rolling and icing. And good luck.

From DonGardinero on Tue, Jun 09, 2009 at 14:34:34 from 75.162.161.195

I agree with Rhett. You'll pull through it and feel great for the marathon. Mark is having issues with his left quad, too.

From Smooth on Tue, Jun 09, 2009 at 14:37:15 from 71.32.235.204

Rhett,

I was just thinking about that. Why do I keep doing dumb things the week before a marathon? like...race a 5K or run some "break the tape taper workouts")...then WHAM! I get in trouble. My body isn't recovering like it used to...I'm getting OLD! ARRRGGGHHH! STINK! STINK! STINK!

From Smooth on Tue, Jun 09, 2009 at 14:40:26 from 71.32.235.204

Dale,

Mark is having left quads issues too? STINK! At least he doesn't have a marathon this Sat. He'll heal in time for WBR next Sat. I'm sure. Kathie will pray real hard for him. Oh, he's A LOT YOUNGER than me.

From RAD on Tue, Jun 09, 2009 at 15:40:32 from 67.166.99.8

Smooth, I'm glad you were able to get out and get some miles in. I'm so sorry you've got your quads acting up on you, that is one thing I'm starting to loathe about running. I feel like I've always got something I'm working on 'recovering' - why can't everything just cooperate and let us run? Take good care of it for UVM this weekend!!

From Maurine/Tarzan on Tue, Jun 09, 2009 at 17:55:47 from 63.255.172.2

You know the routine (and you know what to do) - so take care of it. Let yourself heal today and you will be fine on Saturday. Remember - a long, long, long, long run. If I find out you change your mind half way through and race on Saturday you will be grounded!

On the bright side - get through Saturday and we have a long break before the next marathon.

From RivertonPaul on Tue, Jun 09, 2009 at 18:00:46 from 67.42.27.114

Shame. Take care of things.

From Kathie on Tue, Jun 09, 2009 at 18:05:45 from 207.155.176.10

I thought I told you to rest, I know it is harder than it sounds. I guess you just need to roll and stretch now.

From MrsFIT on Tue, Jun 09, 2009 at 19:36:53 from 24.2.68.35

If anyone can overcome this "road bump" its you Smoothie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stay POSITIVE and REST.

From MarcE on Tue, Jun 09, 2009 at 22:04:15 from 24.155.140.8

Smooth, what's up? I tried to go back in your blogs to see what happened, but I guess I can't figure out how to go to a preceding month for someone other than myself. I hope all is well with you before Saturday. (maybe it's time for you to us the MarcE Minimalistic Marathon Method -- run as little as possible, but still finish...and pay for it dearly in the last few miles. :-) Get well soon, SmoothyQ.

From AmberG on Tue, Jun 09, 2009 at 23:53:05 from 64.255.88.143

Oh man SMooth, , , sorry about the quads . . . take it easy this week! These injuries are always harder on our minds I think, , , but I know you will do great on the marathon - all that positive energy you have.

Thanks for all your comments :) You're a true-through-and-through blogger friend, , , to many! THanks :) I hadn't heard UTV was a faster marathon than Ogden. ? Yeah! I'll look for you and hopt to see you!

From Smooth on Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 00:17:00 from 71.36.81.54

Rachel,

Ain't that the truth - we're always recovery from something. "Patch me up and I'm good to go" only works part of the time.

Maurine,

I know the drill. Knowing and actually doing is two different things. Will you keep reminding me that I'm NOT racing on Sat. It's just a long long long long run with hundreds of my friends? If I goof up I WILL BE TOAST.

I can't think about Park City yet. One race at a time. Someone please slap me when I get the race bug and sign up for more.

Paul,

Will do.

Kathie,

I ran before I read your comment, stink! You give the BEST advice. Should I run tomorrow?

Kristi,

How's Mark's left quads?

Marc,

No earth shattering events. Just silly me racing a 5K too fast for my own good. I was VO2 maxed out, cramped up, one step away from total legs and lungs failure. Then didn't recover well by too much sitting and standing.

Amber,

The quads have to heal and be ready by Sat. No ifs or buts about it.

Yes, I believe UVM to be faster than Ogden. There's a greater elevation drop especially in the first 17 miles. I found it hard to pace at Ogden with different distance races (the Half, the relay) going on at the same time. A runner who runs an aggressive downhill can really shine at UVM.

From Teena on Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 10:48:42 from 67.177.20.13

I'd be tempted to say that maybe you shouldn't run UVM, but I know better!!! :)

Do you want me to tape your knee for you Friday after the Fun TRB trip? How do you feel this morning?

From MrsFIT on Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 11:46:20 from 24.2.68.35

Marks quad was doing okay this morning after a lot of icing the day before - he thinks it has something to do with riding on Monday so he's apprehensive to ride at all the remainder of the week.

From DonGardinero on Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 12:16:04 from 75.162.190.208

How's that quad today? I hope it's feeling better.

From Kathie on Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 13:10:49 from 207.155.176.10

I hope you are resting...please tell me you are!

From Smooth on Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 13:26:39 from 71.32.235.202

Teena,

I'm one confused mess again! WHAT TO DO?

I need legs transplant or have my head examined! I definitely need to go to the Temple. LOVE YOU!

Kristi,

Glad Mark got it figured out. You're the cycling queen. He needs to slowly catch up to you.

Dale,

The quads were better when I woke up; but I had to go mess it up with a run. Now they are back to ground zero. STINK!

Kathie,

I should have checked the blog first and listened to you. Do you think it's too late to repent. Will 2 rest days help...please tell me it will.
