Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

17 years ago today,  a Monday morning after General Conference,  I went into labor and gave birth to a beautiful perfect baby boy who completed our family of 8.  This morning that baby boy towered over me, scarfed down breakfast and off to conquer AP History and Calculus.  Where did all the time go?

In two weeks I will be standing in the corral with thousands of excited runners at Hopkinton, watching the F16s zoom overhead in a hopefully calm blue sky.  This morning  the Utah sky is clear blue, the air is fresh, trees are budding, birds are chirping.  What a perfect day to do my last 10 Yasso's run.

Had a breakfast of yogurt topped with Kashi cereal, 1/2 a blueberry muffin with milk, water.  Did the Dynamic Flexibility Exercises: Tilt Walk, Zombies, Trunk Rotation, Lunge Walk, Lateral Lunge, Foward Leg Swing, Lateral Leg Swing, Heel Bounce.  Wore my Boston 08 s/s shirt and shorts (ahhh, no more tights and jackets), sunglasses and set my Garmin to show pace, average pace and lap pace on 3 different screens.

Ran 1.5 mile for warm up.  Ran 10 Yasso's around the block just like last week,  10 x 0.5 mi at 5K race pace, 0.2 mi recovery at marathon pace in between.   Legs were tired but felt good with 1.6 mile cool down.

10.25 mile in 1:29:15.  AP: 8:42.  Splits: 9:13, 8:16, 8:15, 8:06, 8:59, 8:23, 9:02, 8:37, 9:11, 8:54, (last 0.25 @ 8:58)

What a perfect run for a PERFECT day :) I am so excited for you at Boston this year :)

Happy Birthday to baby :) Do the baby's actually grow up???

From Bec on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 17:20:21 from 205.123.38.98

2 weeks 2 weeks 2 weeks!!!! I can't believe that it is already here.

You are a great mom!

Happy running! You don't know how much you have motivated me. Since I have read your blog today, you have motivated me to go running. You don't know how much I DON'T want to go today.

From Smooth on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 17:34:35 from 71.36.85.29

Leslie,

THANKS! I'm still thinking how fun our Sat. run was. Can't wait to see you this Sat.

Marion,

Unfortunately baby did grow up. I get teary eyed just thinking about how in a short year he'll be off to college and in two years he'll be off on a mission. I HATE goodbyes! You better hang onto your little ones and the great time NOW.

Bec,

Go run. You don't feel like running 'cause you had a GREAT race on Sat. Just run an easy recovery run. You can throw in a few strides there but nothing hard. We can't improve much in the next 13 days; but we sure can mess things up and get hurt. Taper time is to store up energy and sharpen our training. No need for hard days anymore.

Hi Smooth...Did I tell you I was born in Massachusettes, right outside Boston (grew up in NH)? You will love the area, however no leaves come out there until late May, weather, like here, is unpredictable. Do you get the Runner's World? As usual there are some great articles about the Boston Marathon. Wish I had the time to go. Enjoy your tapering!! Great workout today!!! : )

From Smooth on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 17:57:52 from 71.36.85.29

Julie,

I love visiting Massachusettes. Yes, I have R.W. and read the articles on Boston Marathon this month. I love the "Age Graded Qualifying Time" proposed by RW. Wish you were going to Boston too. I'm crossing my fingers that it will be as nice as last year weather wise.

From Rhett on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 19:00:02 from 170.215.58.122

So I'm assuming those splits are you mile paces for each 1/2 mile. You could hop 1/2 mile faster than what you wrote and I know you are super speedy. Great job getting in those final Yasso's. Now get some rest so those legs don't feel tired in 2 weeks.

From Smooth on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 19:31:30 from 71.36.85.29

Rhett,

Those splits are my mile splits. I would start each 0.5 mile by looking at the time then at the end of the 0.5 I would look at the time and see how much time has lapsed. It was mostly 5 to 7 seconds shy of a 4 min. Then I would just jog/run for 0.2 mile for recovery. I should probably set my Garmin for interval workouts but hadn't figured how to do it yet and since I know I want to run my 0.5 mi under 4 min. and I run around a 2 mile square block so that was the easiest. My question is: 0.5 mile is shy of 800 meter, right? So I may actually be doing my 800s in over 4 min.?

From Rhett on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 19:34:54 from 170.215.58.122

Wow Smooth, that is even more impressive, since your recovery part of your run was at a pretty quick pace. You are so ready to shatter your PR from last year.

From Amber on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 21:33:09 from 64.255.88.143

What a great day today: beautiful weather, your son's bday, and completion of some smokin' yasso's! It always is such an accomplishment to finish speedwork for the week! Great job! So, , , do you have 6 kids? 8 kids? You are incredibly amazing, that much I know for sure!

From Amber on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 21:48:52 from 64.255.88.143

By the Way: I didn't get to comment about your long run on Saturday! Great Job, it sounds like you had a blast, even though I don't know how you can stay so positive through snow and wind!!! Amazing I tell ya!

I would love to come up and run a long run w/ you, I promise I'd even bring food for the end :) Your tailgate parties sound rockin' and now it's official that you are 100% NUTS!!! you wouldn't want it any other way.

You will never forget those crazy weather runs, you come out a champ, and did something most people wouldn't dream of. We ran a 23 miler in Park City once in a blizzard and now looking back on it, it was one of my favorite runs, , ,you definitely bond w/ your fellow running friends!

I'm jealous I couldn't be in the warm car after the run laughing and eating . . .how fun!

Once again . . . You're amazing :)

From RAD on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 21:53:46 from 67.166.99.8

Nice Yasso's this morning!! Your really gettin some speedy feet under you. It was a beautiful day and I was stuck inside :( I still had to run in the cold and dark in the early morning. However, I did enjoy some backyard time with the kiddos in the beautiful evening. Keep up the great work and motivation for all of us!!

From Maurine/Tarzan on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 22:09:02 from 97.117.61.168

Great job, Smooth. You are going to be a Rock Star in Boston. Your workout made me want to take a nap. I really need to improve my attitude about speedwork.

I disagree with you - our babies may get bigger, but they don't grow up. My baby is 19 and he is still my little boy.

From Smooth on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 22:54:06 from 71.36.85.29

Rhett,

Thanks, my 17 yr old informed me that 0.5 mile is actually 806 meters; so I'm good for those 0.5 mile repeats. I'm a little puzzled why my splits weren't more consistent. I checked my other Yasso workout splits and they were like that too except today's were faster. So I think it's probably due to the ever-so-slightly change in elevation and wind resistance. I'm so stoked.

Amber,

You are so nice. I have 6 children, 8 is the total # in the family; perfect size to seat comfortably around the table and in the mini-van/suburban. I have been blessed with great kids. I think Heavenly Father knows I can't handle challenging kids.

You would have loved our RHPCs group runs. We are nuts and love it. We are all about FUN, RUN, FOOD & FRIENDS!!! I am so grateful I got to meet them; friends forever!

Rachel,

Sorry you had to sit inside for class. You're such a good mommy to spend time with your darling children. You are so dedicated to get up so early to run.

Maurine,

Thanks. Just being in Boston is good enough for me. You'll get right on with the speedwork as soon as your knee co-operates. Yeah, you're about our babies. My husband still treats our caboose like a baby. I guess they will always be our babies in our hearts even though they are giants.

From Teena on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 22:59:35 from 67.177.20.13

Smoothie Q!!!

What an awesome day you had!!

A giant Happy Birthday to your boy!! Btw, 17 is the GREATEST number of all time!! Hope he enjoyed his FHE shopping trip! Much funner than our FHE this evening. We had a lesson on how cleanliness helps invite the Spirit and then chose one of the kids' rooms to all work on. The boys share a room so we decided to talk that. The kids thought it'd be fun but quickly changed there mind. I need to be better at looking in their closests, drawers, etc ... I think for the past 6 months when they were suppose to clean their room they just shoved everything in those places!! Silly boys. Couldn't figure out how they went through so many socks ... seemed like I was buying 10 packs every other weekend. Found them all tonight!! :)

Love you!! LOTS LOTS LOTS!!!!

(You are SO ready for Boston.)

From Nancy on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 23:37:04 from 76.27.11.127

I had fun visiting with you during the Riverton 1/2 Marathon. You are a great runner. You have just about the opposite in kids as I do. I have 7 daughters and one son. Good Luck at Boston. I'm sure you'll do great.

From Smooth on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 23:41:30 from 71.36.85.29

Teena,

He got a very expensive pair of football cleats, 1 pair of casual school shoes, 2 pairs of kahki cargo shorts and 1 pair of jeans. His friends brought over birthday cakes. The only sad part is he's been sick with sore throat and a cough. I might take him to the doctor if he doesn't feel better tomorrow. He wanted me to give him a haircut tonight, and I said NO WAY, I don't want to get sick. What a mean mom!

Your boys are so funny. I know all about boys and their socks. My boys are the same way. Their idea of cleaning their rooms are to throw EVERYTHING in the closets or under the beds. I swear strange things were growing in there. I LOVE YOU!!!

From Smooth on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 23:46:36 from 71.36.85.29

Nancy,

THANKS! You are an amazing runner. WOW, you have 8 children, what a great mom! I hope your hamstring heals well and I'll see you back on he road soon.

From Teena on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 23:47:36 from 67.177.20.13

Smoothie,

Glad your boy was able to get some fun stuff!! Very smart mom ... NO GETTING SICK!!!

My boys are clever ... they know that I check under the beds ... so those areas were as clean as a whistle!! They also know that I like things organized in storage bins, etc ... so they just get a bunch of small rubbermaids, fill them with whatever is hanging around (socks, toys, school work, FRUIT PEELS, etc) and stack them neatly in their closets!! Gotta give them straight As for cleverness! :)

From Smooth on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 23:54:42 from 71.36.85.29

Aww, A++++ for being so clever. So you must be running out of rubbermaids too. Funny how kids have a different idea of "cleaniness". We used to have 3 rotating FHE themes, "Cleaniness is next to Godliness", "Let us ALL speak kind words to each other" and "How are we doing on our goals". The kids like THEIR own FHE themes better: "How to make yummy treats." "Puppet show" "Book of Mormon board game".

From Teena on Tue, Apr 07, 2009 at 00:13:54 from 67.177.20.13

Oh Smooth!! I guess some things never change, huh?

Good times!! :)

From Teena on Tue, Apr 07, 2009 at 00:14:50 from 67.177.20.13

Oh yeah ... one more thing ... my kids' favorite FHE: The Jensen Dance Off!! Always good for a laugh!!

From Smooth on Tue, Apr 07, 2009 at 00:20:43 from 71.36.85.29

That sounds like fun. What kinda dance?

From Teena on Tue, Apr 07, 2009 at 00:26:50 from 67.177.20.13

Pretty much anything goes. The kids get a kick out of Ryan and I dancing ... but I have to say my favorite dance to watch is what has come to be known as Oliver's signature move the "shaky robot." He tightens up all of his muscles so tight until he starts to shake and then he moves his arms up and down like a robot!! It's a riot!! Total classic!!

From Smooth on Tue, Apr 07, 2009 at 00:29:41 from 71.36.85.29

That just put a smile on my face. He'll have to do the shaky robot for me next time I see him. What a cutie!

From jun on Tue, Apr 07, 2009 at 11:54:48 from 66.239.250.209

I'm so happy for you Smooth. You are going to do awesome in Boston. You are truly an inspiration.
