64F, 92% humidity.  I've never really bombed in a race, so I guess it was about time.  I've probably had half a dozen training runs where I've ended up covering this distance faster.  Most things that could go wrong, did.  I forgot my energy drink/caffeine in the morning, and I normally never do anything more than a recovery run without it.  Then the temp/humidity ended up about like Houston, except we were in direct sunlight for this one.  Today confirmed to me that I lose all my endurance above 60 degrees.  The course was also hilly; it was never flat, always up or down.  I could use some hill training.  To make matters worse, I didn't learn my lesson about adjusting my pace to the conditions, and I started out as if I had perfect conditions again.  I'll steal the Proverbs quote from Preston's blog the other day - "As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly."  So those are my million excuses!  Mostly, I just...ran...bad.  I was pleading for the finish line around mile 4.

7:03, 7:03, 7:12, 7:25, 7:18, 7:32, 7:49, 7:47, 8:04, 8:07, 7:59, 8:04, 7:39, 0:53.

About halfway through, I mentally died.  Probably could have given a little more effort but I had completely wilted mentally and physically in the heat.  Ended up pretty dehydrated as well.  I wish I could pull something positive out of this...guess it is technically a PR, and I got in a solid medium-long run.  Time to take an easy week and reset everything.

Claim it as a PR and then steel your resolve to quit eating your own vomit.

Ah shucks! I know how you feel--I have also felt the sting of running faster in training than in a race. Those are the kind of conditions that kill me too. Way to gut it out and get a training run out of it. I think the easy reset weeks is right on par, and you will be good to go for Oklahoma City. Your mileage base is great, you've had lots of solid runs, and this race is not a reflection on your fitness. Keep in mind that it is hard to race in the middle of marathon training when your legs have a lot on the odometer!

Bummer, but that is the way it goes sometimes. I agree with Aprils observation. I might ad......maybe a new shirt....

I would guess on a good day you are 10 minutes faster than today, and anyway I don't think you bombed it, that is a solid effort and a good result. My current theory (having lots of experience in this area and desperately needing an explanation) is that bad races build speed faster than stellar training. I think OKC is going to go well.

I agree completely with seeaprilrun. You have to trust your training - which as been great - and chalk this one up to a learning experience. You will do great @ OKC.

Hey Turbo Joe...You're not getting out of your new name that easily...! I know what you can really do! I think you got caught up in the conditions more than anything. I've found out, in the last week or so, that 64 degrees and 92% humidity is much different than 45 degrees and 50% humidity. It will probably take our bodies a little while to adapt to the warmer conditions. I also think you've been pushing yourself hard and your body may have been just a little tired. I've been training similar to you (although slower) and plan to contine to press the milage and pace for a few more weeks before OK...then tapering to refresh my body. All we need to hope for now is a little cooler weather, low humidity and no wind on raceday...Hope that's not asking for too much...LOL

Anyway...congradulations on your new PR! Forget about how you felt and recognize what you accomplished!

Tracy - will do. The vomit comment made me laugh. Sometimes I think I have the brain of a dog.

April - thanks, you are right as usual -- I was just reading about training lag and I think the faster stuff and high mileage (high for me) may have caught up to me.

Rye - no! just buying the one running shirt I have killed me...it was over $20! If I hadn't had a gift card I would still be running races in t-shirts.

Flat - thanks, I think 10 minutes is generous but I'm glad to hear your spin on bad races and I think I will come out smarter and stronger.

DH - thanks -- will do, I'm convincing myself right now

IJR - I will join you in hoping for that cool weather...it could happen...right?
