Stunk it up today - I hate the 10K.  Basically went out forcing the pace I wanted for the first half and it was way too fast for me today.  Miles 4 and 5 were into the wind but I can't in good conscience use that as an excuse, the wind speed was not too bad.  I was just mush after the 5K and gave a pretty poor effort for the last 3 miles.  I'm trying not to read in too much as far as what kind of shape that I'm in, hoping it was just a bad day, but I expected a lot better on a flat course with close to perfect conditions.  Sub-3 needs to be shelved for sure.  Gotta focus on 3:05, because I probably still have work to do to get there.  Don't you hate it when you realize you're slower than you thought you were?  Anyway, here's the carnage:

6:18, 6:21, 6:21, 6:40, 6:47, 6:50, 1:38 for 0.29 (5:38 pace).

Danielle and I both measured the course about a tenth of a mile long, not that it really mattered for me, given my crappy running.  The last .29 would've been slower but (another) girl was passing me and I picked it up to finish ahead.  Actually, it was really easy to pick up the pace, which kind of lets me know I dogged it way too much once I knew it would not be a good race.  Lazy bum.  Ah well, back to the grind.  Happy Thanksgiving all.

Don't beat yourself up too much - sometimes it's just not the day. I'm convinced that 10k is the worst distance!

From derhammer on Thu, Nov 24, 2011 at 13:25:19 from 141.0.9.75

I think 10k is the hardest distance to race - just above 5k pace but for twice as long.

I read that one needs to run 3 10ks before the marathon to get an accurate gauge - so you can always try again. I know you are faster than today. For whatever reason it just wasn't your day. It happens.

From seeaprilrun on Fri, Nov 25, 2011 at 11:06:51 from 68.103.252.217

I agree with the above. It just wasn't your day. If it had been, I don't think you would have had a problem with your opening pace. I just stunk a race up worse than you, so I know it stinks to get out there and underperform, but don't make the mistake of reading too much into it. There are good races and bad races, and you gotta throw out the bad ones. Your next one will be better. I don't think sub-3 is out of the question. There is a huge, huge, huge, difference between 6:50 and 6:30 pace. I don't why sub 6:30 is so hard and beats you down, yet just a little slower at 6:50 is manageable, but that seems to be the case.

From JG on Fri, Nov 25, 2011 at 11:28:07 from 71.57.246.108

Yeah Joe, don't be too hard on yourself, sub 41 is still a great time. I can't tell you how many times I have jumped in a 10k at 6:20 to 6:30 pace, and at about the halfway point, your body says wtf! There is no question in my mind I should be able to run a sub 40 10k ... but I have failed every time I tried! A little 10k training would make the difference, but if your goal is a marathon 6 weeks away ... I wouldn't sweat it if you are not peaking for a 10k right now!

I agree with April, big diff between 6:25 & 6:50 ... and you have shown in training runs you can hold a 6:50 for over 10 miles. Anyway, 3:05 is what you need ... maybe tackle the first half at a 7:00 pace & then speed up if you feel it. You definitely have a sub 3 in you, make sure you get to Boston first ... I would rather go 92/91, than 90/95! Not saying you couldn't go 90/89 ... but you introduce another risk factor attempting that.

From Tracy on Fri, Nov 25, 2011 at 15:31:35 from 50.103.225.65

Chalk it up to a not-so-great race and keep focusing on your goal. You're putting in the training that it takes to get there!

From Kelli on Fri, Nov 25, 2011 at 17:20:11 from 71.219.83.156

OH, I think a 5k is far worse!!! But I have such little experience in both....

I think you did great, you can only do what you can do each day, and every day is a different day! Wish our bodies were more predictable.

And, if you care, I still have complete faith in a sub-3 for you!!!

From Burt on Fri, Nov 25, 2011 at 17:53:09 from 72.223.93.131

It's not often that I agree with Kelli, but today I do.

Okay, I always agree with Kelli. I'm a butt kisser.

From SlowJoe on Sat, Nov 26, 2011 at 12:15:26 from 98.201.152.210

Andrea - I think I agree that it's the worst distance, especially if you run it too hard at first...

DH - 3 10Ks is about 3 too many!

April - thanks, I agree about 6:50, it's kind of a different mode altogether. Think I need to just go by effort more.

JG - I was definitely thinking 91 or 92 for the first half. If by some miracle I'm in sub-3 shape, I'll still get close anyway.

Tracy - thanks, yeah - big picture.

Kelli - thanks, I appreciate it and wish I shared that faith! Oh, but you're wrong about the 5k, even if Burt agrees.

Burt - Butt kissing can sometimes take you far in life
