69F, 90%, raining.  Hootenanny 5k this morning.  I met up with Preston (I Just Run) and their foreign exchange student, Polina.  We hung out for a bit, then I did a ~20 min warmup run w/ strides.

I started out ok and hit a 5:47 for mile 1, which I think was a bit downhill.  I ran with the other second place guy for a half mile or so and we talked about how we were glad there was someone ahead, since it was dark and hard to see the signs.  Mile 2 was uphill (6:06), and I passed the first place guy here...now I was the one that needed to pay attention to where I was going.  We hit the school right at the mile 2 marker, and I saw my lead had grown.  I was feeling pretty decent to start mile 3, and came to a 'T' in the road but there was no sign.  I guessed and turned right.  Started slowing down once I realized I'd done it again and had gone the wrong way.  I saw the 2 guys behind me had followed; they were a good 50m+ behind.  I randomly cruised through the neighborhood and wound up back at the school again, having already run more than a 5k.  From there, I followed the crowd and saw the turn I missed.  Just kinda cruised in from there.  Mile 3 was 6:18, mile 4 was 6:40 (to add injury to insult, I rolled my ankle in mile 4 and now it's puffy and hurts a bit), and then another 2 minutes to the finish for 4.34 miles.  I don't know what eventually happened to the other 2 guys...

From there, I decided I'd try to run with Preston for his last couple miles of the 10k around the lake, since I'd basically just had a 2-mile cooldown along the 5k course.  So that was fun, at least.  Then a long, hydroplaney drive back to SA.

I still would definitely not have broken 18.  I actually felt good too, but the pace was not there.  Hopefully I can still run on my puffy ankle tomorrow...

ohhhh nooo! getting off course in a race is the worst. sorry about the no-signage T in the road and the ankle roll. good first mile, though. right on pace for sub-18. you probably could have made up some time in mile 3 and been close to the sub-18 if you had been able to mindlessly cruise -- thinking about where to turn and making panicked decisions while trying to race is definitely going to cost you some seconds. and adding 1.233 miles will add a bit o' time as well. :)

i hope the puffy ankle isn't puffy for too long.

Thanks for joining me as the only other runner on this blog to get lost on a 5K. Nice running though.

Sorry the hootenanny didn't turn out like you wanted, Joe. I hear the Fandango course is clearly marked! Seriously, take it easy on the ankle.

I think it's time you went back to track racing!

From SlowJoe on Sat, Oct 11, 2014 at 14:50:09 from 107.77.80.50

I might have made it sound like it was the course's fault, but there was no sign at the T because I had already been off course for a quarter mile. I just zone out too much in these races...

Yep, racing 10-year-olds on the track...that's the way to go for me.

Bummer! I hope the ankle turns out all right. You're for sure updating your PR next time around. Nice workout nonetheless.

Thanks Matt. Ankle has tripled in size, should be interesting...

Oh no! You rolled an ankle at the hootenanny! Take care of it! Sorry about the race--at least you got a few fast miles in there!

From Jason D on Sat, Oct 11, 2014 at 18:41:12 from 68.80.27.222

I am always hesitant to run local 5ks. The one certified one I found this weekend, I couldn't get to very well without a car. You just never know what you're gonna get.

Take care of that ankle. Do what you have to to make sure it doesn't turn ugly.

Sorry about the ankle. That's a nasty way to finish off the day. Can't help but think of supertramps song,"take the long way home." :)

Sounds more like a Monday kinda race. Hate it when that happens. Get well.

From Tom Slick on Tue, Oct 14, 2014 at 13:17:30 from 168.179.157.240

Well get geared up for the Chosen HM and bring a well rested ankle to play. Have you got schedule for 2015 yet!

I love this report. I can laugh because I've gotten lost before, too.

I thought about asking for directions but then remembered that's for sissies.
