51F, SSE 22-31 mph.  no kidding.

Short version - Really happy with this one given the wind.  When I felt the wind before the race, I thought it might take a miracle to break 1:30, but it actually happened.  No telling what this time would be worth on a normal day (and I'm not gonna guess) but I think I'm right on track with my fitness.

Obviously the splits are all over the map with the wind.  The headwind legs mostly came up front and were absolutely brutal.  When it gusted, it felt like I would almost come to a complete stop.  The tailwind legs were fast, although the damage had already been done.  Here are the splits/commentary, with HW in red, crosswind in black and TW in green (although I'm sure it'll be obvious).

1 - 6:52 - It started out with a little loop, and I stuck with the 2 leaders.

2-5 - 6:51, 7:27, 7:21, 7:29 - Mile 2 was neutral until about 1.6 and then the hell started.  When I felt what the headwind was like, knowing that we would have to endure it for 4 miles, I almost mentally gave up.  The two leaders hammered it and I was left by myself.  I was completely smoked trying to hold 7:20s and thought I was done.

6-10 - 6:48, 6:53, 6:41, 6:35, 6:33 - At about 5.2, it turns off the highway to a crosswind, and the slippery gravel begins for the next 3 miles.  My breathing was really starting to recover even though I was going a lot faster.  Mile 7 was about half headwind.  Mile 8 was a nice tailwind but probably had the worst gravel, really slippery.  Miles 9 and 10 were crosswind but the gravel ended and the asphalt began; I was starting to find my stride and had recovered from the headwind legs.  The second place guy was about 0.25 miles ahead after mile 5, but I had closed to about 0.15 miles by mile 10 (I would see him pass a landmark, then look at garmin to see how long it took me to get there).

11-13.1 - 6:19, 6:27, 6:36, 0:39 (5:45 pace) - Now the part I had been waiting for - I actually did the last 5K in exactly 20 min.  I closed to within 30 seconds of 2nd place but couldn't catch him.  Mile 13 we lost a majority of the tailwind and I really redlined trying to catch up to 2nd place.

If you break up the race into 2 halves, I did the first 6.55 miles in 46:39 (7:07 pace) and did the second half in 42:52 (6:32 pace).  The funny thing is it might have been a positive split effort.

Afterward I ran the race opposite direction until I saw Danielle, and ran her in.  She got a 10-second PR, despite the wind.  So we are both feeling pretty good.

results (it seems 5-6 seconds was added to everyone's time; I'm sticking with my watch time since I could not have been off by that much!)

Congratulations to both you and Danielle for both PR'ing and preservering in those hellishly windy conditions, and for your end of the race charge trying to catch second place! (I HATE windy conditions - would much rather run up never ending hills!)

Wow Joe this is incredible! You were really killing it in the closing miles--a pace you could very possible have held for an entire half marathon had you not had the headwind. Smart race--congratulations. I could see you pulling down 1:25 in better conditions! Wow! This is a great indicator of your fitness. I think you really need to visit the idea of sub-3 in Houston.

I counted the word "wind" 16 times. But I didn't see Win D, which stands for winning your division. Did you win your division?

From derhammer on Sat, Nov 05, 2011 at 15:19:03 from 70.113.125.159

Awesome job, Joe. You should definitely consider one of those other half marathons to get a true indication. Congrats!!

Great race Joe ... grueling conditions! Way to battle through, that is a huge mental hurdle to battle wind for a 7:30 pace early in the race and finish with a 6:50 AP! Congrats to Danielle as well!!

Awesome Joe.... Tell your wife congrats too. Great way to finish .... you are a stud!

Way to go Joe! I knew you'd have a big PR. I just didn't think it would be that hard. Way to stay focussed. Tell Danielle congratulations too. I know the wind, I biked in it today.

CL - thanks - I think I agree with you, although I'm not a fan of hills either!

April - thanks, tough to predict, but the second-half split has me feeling more confident, even though I got a nice lift from the tailwind.

Burt - hah - it (the 'w' word) was pretty much all anyone was talking about...I guess it shows on my entry. When I picked up my prize, it was for 3rd overall, not AG, so I don't think I was included the the AG division. Not sure how old the other 2 were, seemed close to my age.

Dh - I think I will do a 10k turkey trot in Houston - I figure that is a pretty good way to create "Houston conditions." (no wind, flat sea level) Hopefully 10k is long enough to give me at least some idea of what kind of marathon shape I might be in.

JG - thanks, definitely a tough way to end up at 6:50 but I'm happy

Rye - thanks, will do!

From SlowJoe on Sat, Nov 05, 2011 at 18:03:59 from 75.109.104.60

IJR - thanks, I have a way of making everything seem hard! Going to read about your ride now.

From Andrea on Sat, Nov 05, 2011 at 20:51:35 from 67.177.21.60

Great race today! Wind is definitely the worst when it comes to races. Congrats on a new PR. So exciting!

From DaleG on Sat, Nov 05, 2011 at 21:25:01 from 173.151.22.217

Way to go, Joe!!! Awesome race in the wind and 3rd overall. Very cool!!! Did you get a trophy?

From Dan on Sun, Nov 06, 2011 at 00:55:46 from 24.209.83.20

Fantastic race Joe! I always thought you were determined by that time in that wind- impressive. Celebrate the PR!

From flatlander on Sun, Nov 06, 2011 at 11:54:25 from 76.31.26.153

As hard as the wind was, I am even more impressed by the way you keep up the speed on the uncertain footing in the middle parts of the race. It is just amazing that you could get a 5-minute PR in these types of conditions. Huge congrats. Who knows what you will be capable of at Houston, but it will be very exciting to find out.

From SlowJoe on Sun, Nov 06, 2011 at 14:32:11 from 75.109.104.60

Andrea - thanks, it sure does put a kink in one's plans

DG - no trophy, I got a gym bag...pretty normal prize for our local races, which are not too big or fast

Dan - thanks, definitely reason to celebrate

Flat - I run on those kind of roads a lot, but they definitely take some extra focus and energy; I'm glad Houston is all concrete
