AM:  76F, 83%.  6 @ 8:04 AP.  Did a couple 30-sec strides @ mile pace without looking at my watch and they were around 5:15.  Did not feel as crisp as last week.

I signed up for a HM this weekend.  Kinda surprising they would even have one in south Texas at this time of year, but I need to do some racing, even if it's at a heat slog pace.

PM:  93F, "fees like" 96F, SSE 16-25 mph.  I ran the 1600m tonight.  My warmup was a little pitiful, only made it 2 miles and did 3 or 4 strides.  I did the first stride into the wind and it was depressing enough that I did the rest with the tailwind.  Then sat in my car for 10 minutes blasting the a/c in an attempt to cool down.

They called up everyone in the event.  I looked around and it was me, an old guy, and 7 or 8 kids.  Not like HS kids....like maybe 10-year-olds.  Ah, what did I sign up for?  Anyway it would definitely turn out to be a solo time trial.  My splits were 76, 81 (2:37), 83 (4:00), 78 (5:18).  True, it was hot and windy, but I left a lot of effort on the table as well.  It's hard to go into beast mode when you're feeling ridiculous as you're lapping adorable little kids.  Anyway, I don't think I'll do any more of these meets.  I just kinda felt stupid out there.  The price was right though - $1.50!

nice job. that's a solid 1600m, especially since you crushed adorable kiddies and grampies in the process. it's too bad there wasn't more competition. where were the high schoolers?

$1.50, oh yeah!

From Jake K on Mon, Jun 16, 2014 at 19:55:59 from 98.202.128.218

I imagine that lapping kids could have gotten a little embarrassing. Good job anyways... consider it a nice little workout.

From Jake K on Mon, Jun 16, 2014 at 20:00:42 from 98.202.128.218

And I meant embarrassing for those little chumps that got SMOKED!

From SlowJoe on Mon, Jun 16, 2014 at 20:40:15 from 66.69.93.8

Allie - yeah I was expecting HS runners based on the website...I guess it could've been worse - I could've lost to the kiddies and grampies

Jake - that was an awesome comment, best I've seen in weeks!

Congrats on the win! I'm glad you showed no mercy to those little punks.

From Jason D on Tue, Jun 17, 2014 at 05:40:02 from 24.1.80.94

I had a comment for you last night, Joe, but it either landed elsewhere or was deleted (I used "trouncing" and "kids" in the same sentence).

Good effort, no mercy rule in running even with kids and old people, and so on.

The mile is a bit like the 5k in that you need a few at any given time to figure out how hard to push.

From Jason D on Tue, Jun 17, 2014 at 05:40:28 from 24.1.80.94

(Oh, I said "even if they fall down" too)

From Tom K on Tue, Jun 17, 2014 at 06:53:23 from 174.58.4.250

Man, that's warm. 5:18 is fast when you're NOT running on the sun. Still, that's a $1.50 well spent. How did the old guy do? I only think this would be an embarrassing situation if your wife and kids were out there, mocking/heckling the competition.

From SlowJoe on Tue, Jun 17, 2014 at 07:01:21 from 167.24.104.150

Thanks all - did you ever see the Seinfeld where Kramer is in karate and he beats up all the little kids. "We're all on the same level!"

Acorn - strike first, strike hard, no mercy sir!

Jason - Yeah, that was my bad - I had the activity entered on the wrong day and when I moved it to Monday the comments disappeared. I let the kids have lane 1 when I lapped them, but a nice bump would have really showed them who's boss.

Tom - thanks - heckling is a great idea for future races! The old guy was in the low 7's, pretty good. He was 3rd to one of the kids with the adorable track outfits on.

DH - good one. Good one....

Nice one Joe. Seriously, nice mile. Pretty funny about the whooping you put on those kids.

From I Just Run on Thu, Jun 19, 2014 at 08:49:08 from 67.79.11.242

Glad I didn't come...would have hated to be lapped too!

From joebell1981 on Sat, Jun 21, 2014 at 12:38:02 from 99.39.133.24

Hilarious experience for all those who weren't you! :)

No, but seriously, that's a solid mile time for probably a 90% effort for you. sub 5 def. in the cards, Joe! I say just go and do it solo one cool morning (if there are any)
