73F, 42%.  7:21 AP.  Almost desert-like low humidity made for another good run today.  Finished at or near AT for the last few miles.

We live just outside the city limits on the west side of San Antonio.  Some observations about running from the new neighborhood:

- I have to get on Potranco (busy 2-lane road) to get anywhere.  Fortunately there is a nice fat shoulder for most of it and I can use little neighborhoods to skip some sections.  Coughing up a lot of exhaust; I was spoiled running out in the country in OK.

-The closest place to poop is 3.5 miles away.  Every runner needs to know where they can briefly pull down their shorts if need be.

-The closest track is 6.5 miles away, which means that unless I'm doing a LR/BW, I have to drive to the track...boo.

Overall, it should work out fine; I just have to adjust a little.

Welcome back, Joe. Good run today. Maybe driving to the track will not be a bad thing.

Its always tough to adjust when you get used to things being a certain way. I'm sure you'll find your groove there in no time.

No track for 6.5 miles? What kind of city is San Antonio anyway?

From SlowJoe on Wed, Jul 03, 2013 at 18:19:26 from 66.69.93.8

Tom - thanks, part of me is really against driving somewhere to run (unless it's to meet another runner) but maybe a shorter warmup is a good thing.

Jake - plenty of new places to explore, at least.

Andrea - I know! Even in Nowhere, Oklahoma I had a great track 3+ miles away.

These items are essential! I haven't been to the track for about a year, but I use a stretch of paved trail that is ~1.25 miles long for everything from 400s to 2 mile repeats (I just turn around at the trail head). I also sometimes use one of the "nicer" parts of town that isn't busy and has no sidewalks and most of the time people are willing to give me at least a foot :) Hemmm....I guess they are what you would call "housing complexes." I "walked" around near Potranco a bit. Not sure where you are, but it looks like you have plenty around. I saw some kids playing in the street, so it must be safe, right?

Routes will emerge I think.

Jason, yeah the neighborhood is off Potranco, about 3.5 - 4 miles west of 1604. The farther west I run, the more it thins out, and no one drives west in the morning (they're all going to work in the city) so if I run on the north side of the road it's much more relaxing. It's probably the only time I've run WITH traffic, but it makes sense and then I can shoot off to the north to some more isolated areas. Still looking for someplace FLAT though...nothing yet.

My sister lived near the west end of San Antonio, so if I remember right 1604 is the outside loop and you live west of that? Nice brisk pace today, I agree that you will soon adjust. I have to drive to get to a track too. :( But I could poop way sooner, so I feel super sorry for you!!

From SlowJoe on Fri, Jul 05, 2013 at 07:08:05 from 66.69.93.8

April - yeah, 1604 is the outer loop. I work west of town though, so it's a pretty short drive.

I did spot a couple of emergency locations with some tree cover today, but they are still pretty risky.

I have had situations where I drove to the track, and also when I have ran 3.5 miles to / from the track. My point about maybe that the track drive will not be a bad thing was that I found myself more focused on the speed work, when I didn't have to worry about having anything in the tank for the run home.

Sorry, I have no advice for avoiding the "code brown" condition.
