61F, SSW 13 mph.  Workout was 8 easy followed by 10 @ MP.

8 easy, 7:48 AP.  (8:03, 7:57, 7:54, 7:50, 7:36, 7:38, 7:40, 7:46)

10 MP, 6:45 AP.  (6:52, 6:52, 6:51, 6:49, 6:50, 6:49, 6:39, 6:38, 6:35, 6:30)

Overall for 18 miles, 7:13 AP

I was starting to suspect I'd gone through an improvement spurt this week since my easy aerobic runs were coming in about 10-15 seconds/mile faster than usual.  I think this confirms it.  When I finished it was 63 degrees and in direct sun (around 9 am) so not ideal conditions for me, although not terrible either.

My BQ pace is 7:03, so I don't think that is in much doubt now unless the conditions are particularly adverse.  It might, MIGHT be time to start thinking sub-3, but it's a fine line because the BQ is the goal and I don't want to blow it by getting greedy.

The shoes I ran in (type A4s) will probably be my marathon shoes, as they felt fine the whole time.  I have been dealing with a sore right achilles/calf since the race last weekend though, so definitely need to run in the trainers for awhile.  The good news is that it never hurt at all while running.

Fantastic run!!! I say go with your heart on what to do. What is the marathon you're training for, Houston?

From JG on Mon, Nov 14, 2011 at 10:38:32 from 71.59.27.33

Awesome run Joe. Gotta love those 'fitness jumps' ... and running a 6:35 pace for Miles 15-18! Great stuff!!

From I Just Run on Mon, Nov 14, 2011 at 10:59:31 from 67.79.11.242

I say GO FOR IT ...!!! My money is bet on you if I can just find a fool to bet against me :-)

From ACorn on Mon, Nov 14, 2011 at 15:04:46 from 24.2.76.146

Awesome workout! You've put in some serious work and the times are the evidence. Great job.

OH my heck! Change your name SLOWJOE! WOW! Nice run!!! I always run a ton faster on race day. Your BQ should be easy for you!

From I Just Run on Mon, Nov 14, 2011 at 20:57:27 from 67.79.11.242

I've been trying for months to get Joe to change his name to TURBOJOE. I think it's much more appropriate :-)

From Dan on Mon, Nov 14, 2011 at 21:42:55 from 24.209.83.20

Great run Joe- those early miles followed by the MP miles really pay off. Your run was impressive and sub 3 is no stretch. Positive review on the A4 then?

From SlowJoe on Tue, Nov 15, 2011 at 10:08:07 from 132.3.53.68

DG - yeah Houston...I'll probably end up just going by feel anyway, as I usually ditch my pacing plan early on.

Thanks JG

IJR - I might take that bet

Thanks Acorn

Steam - can't change the name, it's gotten me this far!

Thanks Dan, I think the stars might have to align, but I'm keeping the thought alive for now. The A4's are great, a little harder on your feet than the Kinvaras but I think like most shoes, you can get used to them. I definitely feel faster in them vs. the kinvaras.

Great tempo Joe! Very, very, highly suspect for being in sub-3 shape. I like your run by feel plan--it is really, ultimately, the best way to go. Your run by feel will likely get you to sub-3 though!

From derhammer on Tue, Nov 15, 2011 at 17:50:40 from 192.156.110.40

Sweet Joe. Very nice run indeed. Yes, I agree, once every 2-3 weeks is sufficient.

Someone much smarter than me told me, "BQ first and get the monkey off your back, then go for it at the next marathon." It was such a freeing experience to get that monkey off my back. Now I know if I go all out and blow up it's no big deal. The wheels can come off pretty fast during a marathon.

What is your qualifying time now - 3:05?

From SlowJoe on Tue, Nov 15, 2011 at 21:39:47 from 75.109.104.60

April - thanks, I would like some harder evidence but the run felt great!

DH - that sounds like great advice. Yeah I need 3:05 for Boston 2013 (I won't get the 5-min handicap for being 35 until 2014). I feel like I am finally in shape to go 3:05 in Houston, but I checked the mcmillan equivalents of a 3:00 and don't see any evidence that I am there yet. There's definitely a big difference between the two!
