59F.  Man I love cool weather.  The workout today was 5 x 1 mile at 10K pace, with a quarter mile recovery inbetween (worked out to 2-minute recoveries).  I wanted to test out 6:30 as a 10K pace because I wasn't really sure where I was at, fitness-wise.

First, 8 warmup miles, AP 8:00 on the nose.

Then the repeats were 6:31, 6:29, 6:28, 6:30, 5:51.

That last one isn't even a typo!  6:30 wasn't challenging me too much (did I just say that?) so I put the pedal down for the last repeat.  I was actually in the 5:40s most of the way but met up with my biggest hill with about a quarter mile to go and could not keep the pace uphill.

Finished with an 8:27 cooldown mile, for an overall AP of 7:29.

I think I will have a legit shot at sub-40 in a couple weeks if the weather is like this.

I was believing everything until I read the last statment about a "hill"....Really...? In Abilene...? Remember, some of your readers are from Texas :-) No...really, this is amazing good running!

From Rye on Wed, Sep 07, 2011 at 15:11:06 from 70.58.163.66

Nice! All those slogging miles are paying off for you. Whats your definition of a hill anyway?

From I Just Run on Wed, Sep 07, 2011 at 16:17:55 from 67.79.11.242

"Bump In The Road" .... Opps, did I say that out loud..?

From SlowJoe on Wed, Sep 07, 2011 at 17:12:49 from 75.109.104.60

Ok, it was an Abilene hill. The biggest one around for a few miles, though. Which means about a 30-40 ft climb over a quarter mile. Hanging my head in shame now...

Wow! You are getting super fast! That sounds like a great workout! I should try that one day!

From flatlander on Wed, Sep 07, 2011 at 17:49:26 from 198.207.244.102

That is wicked fast, especially after running 8. I don't care what the temperature is, you are really set right now.

From JG on Wed, Sep 07, 2011 at 17:50:23 from 66.168.207.228

Awesome running Joe! I knew all those 100 degree miles would pay big dividends when things cooled down!

From I Just Run on Wed, Sep 07, 2011 at 19:01:08 from 67.79.11.242

I really don't have any room to talk...I just hope none of those Utah guys don't chime in about our hills :-)

From Burt on Wed, Sep 07, 2011 at 19:50:20 from 206.19.214.144

I guess I don't have as much respect now for the most famous Texan, Hank Hill, if the hills really aren't that big.

From seeaprilrun on Wed, Sep 07, 2011 at 20:01:00 from 205.172.12.230

Holy smokes Joe! Without the hill you would've easily cranked a 5:40! Wow! I think sub-40 will come easily! The slogging has PAID OFF!

From SlowJoe on Wed, Sep 07, 2011 at 22:40:41 from 75.109.104.60

Lindsey - the 2 minutes is the perfect amount of rest to let you keep going fast yet not let you recover too much.

Flat - thanks, I've kinda been dreaming of this day all summer!

JG - hoping you get this day in Atlanta soon!

IJR - I'm sure they are chuckling like we laugh at their "heat"

Burt - Dang ol you better take that back, dang ol Arizona dude

April - thanks, I think I have a good shot!

From DaleG on Thu, Sep 08, 2011 at 00:09:33 from 152.216.11.5

Is it just my imiagination or are you getting way too fast?

From derhammer on Thu, Sep 08, 2011 at 10:36:37 from 192.156.110.33

Breaking 40 should be no problem for you, in fact, you are capable of a faster time than that. Shoot for a 6:20 first mile and adjust from there depending on feel.

From SlowJoe on Thu, Sep 08, 2011 at 13:14:14 from 75.109.104.60

DG - the cool weather definitely gave me a boost

DH - thanks for the vote of confidence; I feel like it will be close to 40 but you're right that a 6:20 opener will probably keep the options open.

From Steam8 on Thu, Sep 08, 2011 at 13:34:03 from 166.70.55.77

WOW you are fast! The colder weather is definitely helping your legs go faster!! ;)

From JG on Thu, Sep 08, 2011 at 14:43:18 from 66.168.207.228

Contemplating race strategies tends to make me dizzy! :) Your run certainly suggests you have a sub 40 in you! Someone once told me that if you conserve 10 seconds in the first mile, it will give you back 20 seconds later in the race. If you go 6:30, 6:25, 6:20 - you are on track for a sub 40 at the 3 mile mark, with over half the race to go ... so you still have options to go lower if you are feeling strong. However you approach it, I am sure you will do great, your training is always an inspiration to look at it! Oh, and just so you know, when you do break 40, we are going to petition a mandate that you have to change your blog name! :)
