I needed to get back into the mountains, so I climbed Mount Van Cott above the U this morning before work. It was a perfect short hike and had about 1200 feet of elevation gain in about a mile and a half. This is a perfect training hike, especially if there is high avalanche danger on the higher peaks. I didn’t know where the trail was, so I went up a gulch that had a faint trail, and ended up busting my hump up to the ridge through some sugary snow. Once I was on the ridge it was quick and easy, although it was a little steep.

I got to enjoy the sunrise from the top over the Wasatch and the entire Salt Lake Valley. I can’t think of a better way to start a day.

It took me a lot of work to finally bag such a little mountain. I took my dog and kids up there on one of the hottest days in the summer of 2009. We had some bad directions, and it took us about an hour of hiking before we ended up in Cepnalopod Gulch. After about 15 minutes heading up the dog wouldn't walk anymore and the kids were crying, so we had to turn back. My kids still call this mountain Mt. Van Hot.

*** PM update: Church ball. Played a good portion of the game and my calves were sore by the end. Fun workout and no injuries.

YAY!!! SO HAPPY to hear that you got your climb in sooo early this morning! WOW!!! Watching the sunrise must be spectacular! I have a friend that lives up by the "U". The painted "U" is practically his backyard. In the summer I could see trails and often wonder how to get to the trail head. Have no idea it's Mount Van Cott (er Hot)! We do live in a great State w/ so many outdoorsy playground!

I wondered how hard that hike was, sounds like I would never make it to the top!!

So, why is it good to hike when the avalanche danger is high? I am confused!

Smooth, the sunrise was fantastic, but there was a lot of dirty air in the valley. Yuck! Van Cott is the next mountain over from the 'U' mountain. The trail starts at the BST trailhead right by the Huntsman Cancer building. I used to take dates up to the block U in high school all the time... lots of great memories. :)

Kelli- You would fly up that peak in no time. It's relatively easy. The only hard part is finding the right trail. there are 4-5 different trails going all over the place up there.

I was saying that Van Cott is a good alternative to the higher peaks where there is avalanche danger right now. There is zero danger on Van Cott.

I am not sure about FLY up it, boy mozey maybe. And good to know you are not out seeking and avalanche. I was confused, but I am tired.
