Are you targeting a specific marathon? That's an amazing 5k time.

Thanks for the kudos! I am looking to run either TOU or St. George. I really want a solid year of 70's-80's going in.

From Kam on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 20:40:32 from 68.66.163.179

Wow. That's a lot of miles. I'm trying to figure out if a sub-3 is possible without hitting those kinds of totals. That's a huge time commitment, and sort of a mental obstacle for me to overcome. Good luck with your training. May the avoid the injury plague.

Gotta love KSOs!

From Chad Robinson on Tue, Aug 24, 2010 at 20:22:46 from 208.110.158.2

I've been running in my Adizero pro's (4.5 oz) all summer changing me to a mid/forefoot striker. I just got my vibrams a week and a half ago and have put 60 mile on them. I will be running in my flats for the TOU half however.

From Jason McK on Wed, Aug 25, 2010 at 11:59:15 from 63.255.173.99

Good luck at the half. Are you shooting for 1:25? Seems slow for a 17:03 5k (not that it is slow, I haven't been able to break 1:25, though I haven't broken 20:00 for a 5k either.)

From Chad Robinson on Wed, Aug 25, 2010 at 12:08:25 from 67.136.62.186

My 5K time was from 2002. I must admit that I have been pretty lazy for the last 7 years. I think right now I could get a 5K in the 18 range. I am shooting for 1:25 on the half (anything less is gravy). Of course upon discovering this blog I know I now need to increase mileage up from 45 mpw to 70/80+.

From Jason McK on Wed, Aug 25, 2010 at 14:25:43 from 63.255.173.99

Hmm - I would guess that if you can run a 5k in 18, with 45 mpw, you could definitely beat 1:25 - even by minutes. Last year, I was running about 35-40 mpw and ran 1:25:37 - my fastest 5k ever really was part of this race - 19:51. It has a lot of gradual decline, probably worth around 2 minutes. Have you used the predictor on this blog? Good luck.

I once again ran my Herriman Elementary Loop - I decided to pick up the pace on three of the miles just to warm up the legs.  The 1st was uphill (+121ft) @ 7:17 ,the 2nd was downhill (-50ft) @ 6:25 and the 3rd was even @ 6:36.  The other 3 miles were at about 7:35 pace.

Herriman Elementary loop again (pace 7:41) - yes there is a trend forming - just keeping it easy before TOU half on Saturday. I start my slow and steady climb to 80 mpw next week (40-50mpw has been my max lifetime).

I have been looking forward to this race for a long time now.  To put it in perspective I must give a little back story.  Last year was the first year I had actually run consistently since 2002 (I finally got off of my lazy butt) and progress was slow.  I ran the Sandy Midnight Moon 5k in 19:10 last year and then more or less shut down running the end of September (used the busy excuse).  On the day after Thanksgiving I was involved in a rabbit hunting accident which resulted with me have having a .22 shell in my back and a punctured lung.  Amazingly, the only real thing the bullet affected was my left lung (it missed everything else that could have made it worse or fatal).  As a result of my punctured lung I had to cut all physical exercise for about 6-weeks.  I did a few training runs in April despite the protest of my lungs and started slowing building miles in May.  I did the race for the cure and two local Stake 5k's the month of May (all in the 21-22 min range).  I did the Riverton 10k July 3rd in 40:37 and continued to build mile in anticipation of the TOU half.

My goal when I first signed up the for the race was a sub-1:30 but as my training progressed I thought a sub-1:25 was very plausable.  I did drive the course and ran the last 4-miles a few weeks ago so I had a good idea what the course was going to be like.

As always I started out the race fast my first mile split was 5:52:39 which I subsiquently readjusted over the next 6-miles - 6:04, 6:08, 6:12, 6:09, 6:14, 6:08 (loved that tail wind coming out of the canyon. Over those 6 miles I was passed by a couple runners and passed a couple myself. Mile 8 was 6:19, mile 9 was 6:24 (feeling the road some on the bottom of my feet), mile 10 was 6:24 as well, and 11 was 6:38 (of course the uphill must start after a 90deg turn).  Mile 12 clocked in 7:01 (funny how that hill didn't seem so bad a few weeks ago) and my legs were definately tired and I was feeling my feat more. Mile 13 gave some love back with a 6:31 and the last 0.1 was 49 seconds +/-.

I ended up having blisters on the pad of my feat at the base of each big toe but otherwise came out feel pretty ok.  I am looking forward to building my base mileage to the 60-80 mpw range over the next several months and seeing where that takes my times over the next year an onward.  TOU half and TOU Marathon (my debut marathon) will be on the scedule next year.

I did enjoy meeting some of the fellow bloggers and look forward to more in the future.

GREAT TO MEET YOU AGAIN and figure out where we met first! Glad you are smarter than me!!!

You are doing absolutely amazing, I am, however, bummed because now I can not win the Herriman Stake 5k anymore!!!!

Looking forward to keeping in touch with the skinniest runner out there, ya got that right! Come on over, I will feed you ice cream every day and maybe that will help.

Best of luck with your training and future races.

Awesome race and report (nice recovery from a gun shot) - though I wouldn't wait until TOU full for a marathon debut. I'm sure you want your debut to be really fast, but the Ogden Marathon is a nice one to start with. Then you can see how well you improve with summer training!

From Walter on Mon, Aug 30, 2010 at 00:54:01 from 24.10.169.110

Wow, I didnt know you were shot! I know you will be amazed at your progress. My first marathon was 3:30 and I have shaved an hour off that in 6 years. Keep up the good work.

From Chad Robinson on Tue, Aug 31, 2010 at 01:15:49 from 208.110.158.2

jtschad - Thanks for the welcome

Kelli - I would love to take you up on the ice cream but I don't think it would help (I am already somewhat of a chocolate-a-holic). Besides is ice cream really good for recovery? I'm not certain Sasha would approve.

Jason - I will definately have to give Ogden a look

Walter - This will be the first time in my life that I have actually ran year round. I really do seem to have a quick healing body, so hopefully it handles the increased mileage well. Thanks for the encouragement.

From Burt on Tue, Aug 31, 2010 at 01:45:23 from 68.225.214.248

;o) Have a great week!

Hi Chad,

My name is Adam and you beat me to posting the JAP article on the 2hr marathon. Out of curiosity do you study exercise physiology? I currently am a post-doc here at the U. I focus mostly on diabetes research but have strong interests in exercise phys for some reason, can't figure out why :)... In any case welcome to the blog and good luck on your build up to next years debut in the marathon.

This run started off well enough but about 3 miles in I started developing a pain at my left leg ball joint.  I have had minor issues from time to time with my right side, but never on the left.  I am not sure if I tweeked something playing ultimate frisbee, or if an accumulation of late nights caught up with me, but it didn't bode well considering I plan on running 14 tommorow.  I ended up walking the last mile of my run.  I average 8:10's for the 9 miles I ran.

Decided to give Saturday's planned 14 miler a try.  The hip felt pretty good from the start and I was suprised to see a first mile time of 7:17 (must be the 2 day off).  My turn over remained nice for the next several miles but my hip started talking to me again around mile 4.  I stop and did some stretching which did help (the soreness was off and on).  I averaged about 7:30 per mile for the first 10 miles.  Miles 11, 12 and 13, however, were much left enjoyable with that blasted hip (the legs felt great) 7:45, 7:40 & 7:51 (all down hill).  The last half was at 8:31 pace (ouch) and walked the last half mile home.  I did ice it when I got home and it is feeling much better.  I will have to see what tommorow brings.  By the way the weather was beautiful in Herriman at 5:00 pm, perfet for a run.  I did average 7:33 per mile for the entire run (minus the last half mile walking).

Hey, I passed you as I was headed up 12600 South (or whatever the road is at that point in time, right before 6400 West). I was going to honk and say HI, but I was coming from behind you and I know how those kind of HONKS can scare a runner half to death!!!

NICE RUN, super fast and you were going uphill and flying when I saw you!

From Chad Robinson on Thu, Sep 30, 2010 at 23:38:46 from 208.110.158.2

Thanks, I find it odd how the same effort can be much faster from one day to the next. I run with my Garmin but I only use while running to track my mile splits (plus it hard to see in the dark) and sometimes it suprises me what my splits are. Other times they are as slow as I thought.

You probably could have honked, but I don't think I need the adrenaline rush at that time. Good luck at St. George. I am looking forward to your race report.

I am back. We went to San Diego and Los Angelos for a week with the family. The boys had a blast. I did do a 10k race in Riverside last Sunday that I will report on shortly. We really had great weather the entire time. The mornings started off cloudy and gray but burned off by noon for some nice sunshine which got hot but not terribly hot. I think carting my nearly four-year-old (Alex) on my shoulders for the good part of three days took the running desire out of me in the morning. My six-year-old (Steffin) is in love with Sea World but enjoyed the Zoo and Disney Land as well.

Back in July when we had locked down our trip to San Diego and Disney Land I decided to peruse online for any race occurring in the area.  The pickings were slim but I found this 10k race in Riverside (about 90 mile from where we were staying in San Diego).  The course mapped out to be an out-and-back course with a 1-2% grade up the first 2 mile or so (I do as much homework as I can before a race - Google earth really helps).  I figured this would be a good course to really see where my fitness level was plus I would be racing in my Vibrams for the first time.

With the race start was at 8:00 a.m. Aubrey (my wife), the boys (Steffin and Alex) and I headed off from the hotel in Delmar at about 6:00 a.m.  I had an orange and some orange PowerAde for breakfast and off we went.  My intention was to get to the race about 30 min early to get situated and warmed-up, however the smart people in Riverside decided to have a race set up right next to the freeway exit, and thus we had to take the scenic route to the start line.  My 30 minutes turned into 15 minutes really fast and I still had to get my bib number.  I also discovered that I left my Garmin back at the hotel - I was doing this one au-natural.  I did get to the start line with about 10 minutes to spare, did a couple of stride outs to warm-up the legs, and we were off.

I think I had a relatively fast first mile (as usual) and then settled into my race pace (whatever that was) for the rest of the race.  Unfortunately they had more water stations (3 x 2 for an out-and-back course) that mile markers (One at mile 5).  There was a cop manning intersection control that was calling out times but without a mile marker they were kind of meaningless.  I passed up a few people in the first mile or two and was pace by the guy who finished 13th and the second place female (the first place female finished in 33:08) who finished 14th in the last mile.  I think I really could have gotten both of them back but I had very little motivation.  My finish time as stated above was 37:42 and I finished 1st in my division.  McMillan pretty much nailed on my projected 10k based off my TOU Half time of 1:23:00.  I think if I had had my Garmin with me I really would have pushed for 6 minute miles, but I was overall pleased with how I did.  I got this large (3" diameter) clear plastic medal for finishing first in my division which was pretty cool, but they messed up in the whole pre-registered shirt thing and I ended up with an XL t-shirt (I think I could get two shirts out of it) as opposed to the Small technical shirt I had requested (I guess I chalk it up to the second time that the race has been held).

The Vibrams were great to race in and served as a random conversation piece throughout the week.  For once people weren't in awe by just how skinny I am.

I did get 6 miles of running in done Monday mornings and 7 miles between Huntington Beach and Newport Beach on Tuesday.  The rest of the week was all about Disney Land with the family.

Thanks, allie the odd thing is that I thought going at 7:30+ pace the first mile.

Jason, somehow my body always gets amped up for a race, no matter what time it is. That would be interesting to have a marathon in the evening though. Hey, I hope you get your knee sorted out.

PM Run - 1.8 miles @ 7:09 pace in the pouring rain - felt kind of nice.  I need to get my 13 miles in today to get 52.5 miles for the week.

I guess I got a bit of a speed workout in this evening as well.  Started playing with an indoor soccer team composed mostly of guys in my Ward.  Alot of wind sprints.

Are you enjoying the VFFs?

From Chad Robinson on Wed, Oct 27, 2010 at 11:31:43 from 67.136.62.186

Yeah, I have been running in them exclusively since the TOU half. I switched to a mid/forefoot striker late spring but there has still been a trasition period getting used to the VFF's. I have had some blisters and various foot/ankle pains (minor) but so far so good. They are definately good conversation starters with strangers in public.

From Jason McK on Wed, Oct 27, 2010 at 11:43:16 from 63.255.173.99

I ran in them quite a bit last year. I liked them - even did TOU half in them. But, by 18 miles, my legs were thrashed... I should run in them more, but when I wore toe socks with them (injinji), my feet immediately hurt.

From Chad Robinson on Wed, Oct 27, 2010 at 12:02:34 from 67.136.62.186

I wore the socks with them from day 2. I felt I had to sinch them up tight without socks and got blisters on the side of each foot after a 4 mile run. Love the socks.

From allie on Wed, Oct 27, 2010 at 16:06:30 from 174.23.195.124

From Chad Robinson on Wed, Oct 27, 2010 at 17:03:26 from 67.136.62.186

allie - Yeah, I was a little nervous about it considering you don't get the shared warmth for your toes with the Vibrams (and my feet get cold easy). It will be a wait and see to how cold I can handle with the warmer socks. I really dislike the treadmill. Thanks, for the comment, I am shooting for 54 miles this week.

I just dropped my son off at football and looked for the gate you were talking about. It looks like a road to NOWHERE, I may have to try it one day!

I used to hate the treadmill, but I have gotten used to it. It is a good change of pace and a REALLY good place to be when it is 8 degrees and windy!

From Chad Robinson on Wed, Nov 10, 2010 at 15:07:37 from 67.136.62.186

I actually plan to hit 60. I did 9.5's all last week so I figured another 0.5 wouldn't hurt (of course I could do without the cold weather). I plan to hit 70 the first of the year.

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 10, 2010 at 19:23:26 from 71.219.65.246

Yesterday was BRUTAL! I wanted to go out in the afternoon, but the wind scared me right back into my house!!

Great job, 70 will be a breeze for you. Seriously, you are NOT invited to the Herriman Stake 5k next year. You will beat everyone by way too much and I will be eating your dust.

Are you going to do the Riverton 5 miler on the 20th? We will be volunteering at the water station. It is a good and super cheap race.

From Chad Robinson on Wed, Nov 10, 2010 at 19:51:52 from 208.110.158.185

Yep, I registered early. It is kind of a crazy course though. I plan on running it a few times this Saturday. I just may have to grab some water though.

I'll be like Dash on the Incredibles and only win by a little.

From Kelli on Wed, Nov 10, 2010 at 20:02:48 from 71.219.65.246

My son's scout troop will be handing out water. I bet their little hands are going to freeze! We can only hope it is so cold no one really wants any water.

I have not looked at the course, but I thought the water station was at an odd place. I will have to go check it out.

From Calvin on Thu, Nov 11, 2010 at 01:31:16 from 66.182.67.50

Kelli, is it a 5 miler? The city's website says calls it a 5k.

Way to get out there for 10 each night Chad. That's dedication.

From Chad Robinson on Thu, Nov 11, 2010 at 02:07:00 from 208.110.158.185

It is a 5k, there is a link to the course map on the Riverton City web site. It shall be an interesting race.

Thanks Calvin, my joys now are turning away from the wind and walking in my front door.

From Kelli on Thu, Nov 11, 2010 at 10:11:05 from 71.219.65.246

Maybe you are right! It was a 5 miler last year so I just assumed that it was again! It would make sense since the water station is at mile 1.5---that would be half way. Are you running it Cal?

From Calvin on Thu, Nov 11, 2010 at 10:13:19 from 66.133.117.3

I intended on this week being a step-back week but not a forced one.  I ended up getting the side of my foot kick pretty good playing indoor soccer Saturday night.  I don't believe I did any structural damage to it, but my foot is sore and swollen.  BTW Vibrams are a great shoe for swollen feet.  I will be taking the next couple of days off depending on how my foot feels.  Hopefully all will be well for the Riverton 5k on Saturday.
