Goal Type:

Olympic Trials Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Stomach is working better, but still not 100%. Did some moderate pickups. 2x0.625 with Jenny in 3:57 and 3:51, then later ran the last 0.25 of the run in 81.8 with Jacob on the little boy course.

Joseph did 5, Jacob 4, William 3, Stephen was having some stomach issues, did only 1, Matthew ran 0.5. Jenny did 4, Julia 3, Sarah 5 at 9:30 pace.

For our family home evening activity we did tree decoration. Most of the family decorated the Christmas tree. Jenny and I "decorated" the AVL tree - she had a lab due in her CS 235 class.

Ran with the little kids, then did 2x0.625 with Joseph and Jacob down the canyon. First one we stayed together and ended up with 3:18.7, but Jacob was struggling with stomach pain. On the second one the stomach pain was too much for him - he could only run 3:28. Joseph and I did 3:21.2. I felt sluggish, but was able to stay on pace when I applied effort. Ran more to get the car afterwards. Both Joseph and Jacob did 5 miles total.

Jenny did 4 at 8:00 pace, Julia also 4 at 8:30 pace.

Today Sarah and I celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary.

Ran with the kids, then went for more distances and did 5x0.25 down the canyon with a brisk 0.25 recovery. Stayed pretty close to 75 on all of them. Felt sluggish on the first, then woke up, but had a hard time going much faster than 75.

Did 5x0.625 down the canyon. The first two were with Joseph and Jacob. I had a long rest after the third one due to a bathroom visit, which helped me run the 4th one a bit faster and keep all of them under 3:20.

Kids and Sarah ran their usual distances, if I remember right.

Usual Saturday distances for everybody except Joseph. He had a goofy playing accident with a toy hand cart, bumped his shin bone pretty hard, and was not able to run at all. Afterwards we had the usual "safety goes before fun" discussion.

12 total for me. I think Jenny was able to run 6 miles today at about 8:00 pace. Mary ran 2:54 400 on the track holding my hand -
a PR. Did a 4 mile tempo down the canyon into a decent headwind. Jacob ran the first 2 with me in 5:48, 5:48 - 11:36 total. I ran 5:38, 5:36 for the last two. Had a hard time upping the pace beyond that, felt like I was hitting a hard wall.
