Olympic Trials Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

With Benjamin and David in the canyon. David is the 4th place Putnam scorer from BYU last year, he and Benjamin are getting ready for Putnam this year, so we were solving Putnam problems on the run. I solved one, still kicking around some in my old age, they solved a few more that were beyond me without being able to sit down and think - all while running. Perhaps it is more than a coincidence that both 3rd and 4th scorer were capable of running 10 miles at sub-8:00 pace and be conversational. I am of the opinion that if kids start running to school instead of taking school bus (or just running and learning at home) their math performance will improve.

Total of 12. Today William set a mile PR by 17 seconds running 7:10.6. More Jamba Juice. His splits were 1:44 - 1:50 - 1:46 - 1:48. He is getting close to going sub-7:00. Joseph and Jacob did an 800 time trial, but something was wrong - neither of them had the juice for some reason. Joseph got 2:47.0, Jacob 2:50.8. Need to figure out if this was just a bad day or maybe they need to do some shorter distance speed. Otherwise kids ran their usual distances.

Total of 20. Benjamin and I did the Uneventful Provo River Half Marathon - meaning we ran the course at race effort for me, endurance tempo run for Benjamin, but there was no official race. Stephen set a mile PR of 9:17 on the little boy course, splits of 4:46/4:31 paced by Julia. Julia figured out a way to get him going - it was not easy. She started making up a story as she ran but she ran the pace for Stephen's record - so he had to keep up to be able to hear the story. Joseph and Jacob did 5. Otherwise kids ran their usual distances.

The Uneventful Half. After the first 4 miles or so I developed a side-ache. Possibly from the lack of long downhill running practice. First two miles were at around 5:30 pace, then we slowed down to 5:45-5:50 or so. On the uphill the side ache went away and I was pleasantly surprised that I managed to run 6:16. However once the downhill resumed the side ache came back and I could barely keep it sub-6:00. The 3 mile tempo stretch (from about 9 to about 12) was 17:48. Benjamin was solving Putnam problems in his head up until about 6 miles, then he had to focus, but he was still comfortable enough that I had to keep telling him to slow down once every half mile or so.
