Olympic Trials Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Easy running mostly, did 4x0.125 with Jacob (Joseph had a side ache, did just the first), and also did another hill sprint for 0.155 in 49.7 over by the house. Usual distances for everybody.

Fast Running Friend Workout - 2018-01-23 08:28:55

Did 2 with Jenny and Stephen in the AM. In the PM took Joseph and Jacob to the track. We ran 5000 to get an idea of what they can run on a random days this time of year. The target was roughly 18:45. I paced them. We went through the first 1 K in 3:38, then 3:40. I sensed that Jacob was struggling, so I eased of the pace on the next one to 3:47. Joseph and I had 11:05 at 3 K, Jacob around 11:07. For a while he was doing well, we did a couple of laps in 90, but then his stomach had really bad problems, and he started slowing down a lot. Our next 1 K was 3:47 (14:52 for me and Joseph at 4 K, 14:54 for Jacob). Jacob's stomach problem became so bad with 2 laps to go that he slowed down to about 7:00 mile pace. Joseph and I went ahead and finished the last 1 K in 3:48 - total of 18:40.4 for the 5000. Jacob suffered his way to 19:12.4. We will try this again next week if the weather permits - hopefully Jacob will get a PR (19:00), and if he is strong enough, maybe Joseph will also get one (18:30).

Jacob did get an altitude 3000 PR en-route, though. The idea of this workout is that if they can be tough enough to run 5000 at a good pace on the track (which is hard for a young kid due to the endless number of laps), when they are running 10 K in Phoenix in a month at a lower elevation on the road with a bunch of people around them to beat, the longer distance would not appear that long.

Then I ran 4 more with Jenny (4 with William, and 1 more with Sarah and Matthew).

Total of 11 for me. Easy day for everybody expect for Julia. Julia did a workout on the track with the first 3 laps at a bit sub-8:00 pace, and then the last lap in 90. She is trying to learn to be comfortable enough at 6:00 pace to be able to break 6:00 in the mile.

Ran with the kids.

Also did 8x0.625 with 0.125 recovery jog. The target was 3:30 down/3:45 up. Joseph and Jacob were supposed to do the first 3 with me, but they were still not recovered from the 5000 on Tuesday. Jacob's legs started hurting in the first interval, so I told him to not do any more. Joseph had a side ache and fell back on the second one (3:47), so I had him stop at two.

Also paced Sarah and our neighbor Bonnie (12 years old, not trained, but apparently with some talent) through a mile in 7:57 on the little boy course after we had run one in 8:40 with Matthew. Sarah ran 5 as usual earlier this morning.
