Olympic Trials Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Day of rest. Talked to family in Russia on Skype. Benjamin got to practice his Russian which is getting decent. Went to church. Had a busy evening with the missionaries - they had two discussions in our ward.

6 47:46.50. 7:57.75 With Benjamin. Discussed vector and scalar products, and how to find the volume of a parallelepiped formed by three vectors in 3-D. My spell checker fussed about "parallelepiped" even after I double and triple checked the spelling, but the word is actually known to Russians well enough to be mentioned in a popular song.

211:51.00.5:55.502 up the Provo Canyon. Was able to stay with Benjamin. It did help that he took the wind for me, there was plenty of it. First mile was 5:58, second in 5:53. I was happy to prove to myself that I can still run that stretch at sub-6:00 pace.

He then did 2:41 "resting" half followed by 2:32 - 10:20 total and 5:13 for the last mile. I closed in 5:28 improving my time from last week by 7 seconds.

1 5:05.00. 5:05.00 Benjamin's assignment was to run 76,75,74,74. My goal was to make it to the half mark and then not plop too badly. We both reached our goals, except the pacing was a little erratic. We opened with 75, then 76, then Benjamin dropped me and finished in 4:59. Nevertheless I ran my fastest mile of the year.

1 5:07.00. 5:07.00 Benjamin's assignment on this one was 76,75,74,68. My goal was to make it to the half again. I reached my goal. Benjamin opened with 75 then 74, 72, and 70. His 72 was not even, though - around 1000 he really kicked into gear and dropped me. He ended up with 4:51, which is a 1 second course PR for him. Not bad for the conditions. The temperature was around 25 F, and we wore a lot of clothes. I felt the cold in particular in the last quarter when the oxygen update requirement starts going through the roof - felt like I could not quite get enough. First half was actually not too bad - probably because you can cheat for part of it and run anaerobically.
