Olympic Trials Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

A.M. 10.2 in 1:14:57. I thought maybe a little under 1:20 after the first couple of miles as the road was very slippery, and 7:20 was I could do on good parts. However, I got used to it after a while and was able to go sub-7:00 on good parts, and still hold it sub-8:00 on bad parts. What is funny is that while most of the route is on the Provo River Trail the worst part of it is our street. They plow the trail more often than they plow our street. But I have nothing to complain about. I much rather have them plow the trail than our street. Not so sure about my neighbors, though.

Jenny ran with Sarah.

P.M.  2 with Benjamin in 17:36. Julia ran the first 1.5 with us in 13:44. 0.5 with Joseph in 4:45. 0.25 with Jacob in 2:57.

I've got a question(s).

1st, I seem to have lost my calander and can't find where I add my mileage as of Jan 1, 2010.

2nd - when someone posts a blog to my site, do I respond directly at THEIR site? or on my own site?

3rd - this is probably pretty easy for the techno's, but I've never blogged. Is there an INFO page?

Thanks for the help. I'm only asking you because your site was noted on the HOME page.

Bern - welcome to the blog! Answers to your questions:

1. Use the "", as well as month name buttons to navigate through the calendar.

2. When you receive an email notification of a blog comment, the message contains instructions on how to reply. The reply should always be made where the original comment was made. Otherwise, you end up with a collection of out of context remarks that are absolutely impossible for another reader to follow.

3. We do not have an info page. However, every screen contains the instructions on what you should do. Make sure to read and follow them. If something is still unclear, post on the Support board on the Discussion Forum. To get to the Discussion Forum, log in to your account first, then click on the Discussion Forum link.

Using the Fast Running Blog is not something that requires a whole lot of computer experience, and can be easily learned in a matter of an hour by somebody with zero knowledge as long as he is not afraid to try things. Do not be afraid to click around and see what happens. The worst thing you can do is delete an entry, and the system will warn you first and give you a choice to back out.

Add Your Comment.

  • Do not respond to another person's comment out of context. If he made the original comment on another page/blog entry, go to that entry and respond there.
  • If all you want to do is contact the blogger and your comment is not connected with this entry and has no relevance to others, send a private message instead.
