Triathlons are my New sport and I LOVE IT

Recent last few years  as I havent done much since I was 16/17yrs, on and off injuries, going out with Friends started. Operations on injuries- compartment syndrome front of the shin had small operation to release the pressure on the fascia.

Oct 2007.  Did the great north run.  ( I was in the elite ladies race, against Kara Goucher and Paula Radcliffe, Im sure u Americans will recall that race).

I was just in on my previous times from the Bath Half Marathon. I ran it as best as I could off my training & circumstances...

Decided to do my 1st Marathon with London looming in the following April I was in the ladies Elite race again.  So the training was on.  I realise now I didnt give my body enough time to recover as it did break down in the last 5 weeks of my training. Injury bound, with calf and hamstring problems I raced!

London Marathon, April 08 (Injury calf issues) 1st marathon  3hrs.12mins .30 secs

Dublin Marathon  Oct 08  3hrs.01mins.13  undulating and 1 toilet stuck/stop (LOL)

Bath Half 2007    1.26.35 hrs

Wilmslow half marathon english champs    1.25.39

18th lady  (With piriformis injury ).

Liverpool 10k 2008 Oct 37.42mins midst marathon training

Wirral 5k 2009 17.41mins off the back off marathon week

Track 3000ms 10.45mins  hmmm I ran this to get points for my club so I just did tactical and ran on 1st lady shoulder and sprinted at the end !

As a youngster

County Champion for Xcountry and

High Jump

and 1500ms track.

pbs aged 13 yrs old

800ms 2mins 16secs

1500ms 4mins 48 secs

high jump 1metre 53  (cant do this now) and I never trained for it as a kid, just competed alot for points for my club, usually spend 2 hours highjumping, and skip off to do an 800 or 1500ms race then go back to high jump, Wish I took the running more seriously!

Run on more than several occasions for my County against Ireland county of Dublin.

Top 50 finnisher at 14yrs of age in english nationals Xcountry.

16.5 miles.

Fueled successfully  for this run, and I did it later on the afternoon, as we had a bit of a snow flurry last night but by the afternoon most places had been melted and it was clear to run.

:-)

Map and splits, I decided to complete the tempo run mid way through as there would be a strong cross wind going back down the by-pass! so I hit marathon pace, on mile 6, then picked the pace up a bit too much and hit 6.30 pace which is closer to half marathon pace for the 2nd of the four Marathon pace miles, but I did it, 4miles at mp or faster, I then slowed the pace back down to the similar as before, 7.30/7.45 and picking the pace up for mile 15 back down to marathon pace, leaving 1.5 miles for a nice easy warm down!

I am made up with this run, I did half a mile more than last week and felt as though I could go on to do 18 but thought better not, I was tempted although I was good and didnt to be on the safe side gotta stay injury free :-)     Along the tempo pace part it is a water front at Crosby and not too many people out, but some I had to shout "coming through" because there was no way I was going to stop at this pace I would never get it going again, I even had to jump over a small dog as some silly woman had 3 small dogs off the lead all over the place I even gave her plenty of time to move herself out the way but she didnt huh! hubby nearly ran one of them over on his bike! LOL     Paul really helped on this run, as I did shield my self a bit on the way back with that cross wind to keep the pace going so wooohoooo HAPPY BUNNY  :-)

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Sun, Jan 31, 2010 at 17:10:30 from 90.195.99.235

From Barry on Sun, Jan 31, 2010 at 20:40:06 from 67.61.235.198

Looks and sounds like you had an awesome run. Good Job!

From missy on Sun, Jan 31, 2010 at 21:49:54 from 70.56.98.145

Nice Run Sam! :) Do you drink water while you run that far in cool weather? Do you take any Clif Shots or Blocks..Or do you just eat several hours prior?

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Mon, Feb 01, 2010 at 04:41:15 from 78.32.130.9

Jon, its off my garmin, I download it and figured out to save as a jpeg then post on here ha ha wasnt too complicated at all, just my mere laziness !

Benny's you mean people traffic, yeah this does annoy me on my faster paces and I really was going to run that tempo near the end of the run although the wind forced my hand to do it earlier ! :-O

Barry - Thanks.

Missy- I fuel the night before then again in the morning, I am trying something new this time, as in my last marathon I had to take a toilet stop... I am not sure if it was the gels, that I take and I would have taken two on this 16 miler previously.... Now I am trying to get used to running without. So on all my long runs this year, I have run without water or gels! and been quite successfull, although on lengthening the run next week I shall have to consider gels and water as I will be doing 18 miles, it is cooler, but when doing tempo I do sweat somewhat LOL :-)

Visible Potty Break I think! LOL

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Mon, Feb 01, 2010 at 06:28:44 from 78.32.130.9

Ha ha ha Not sure I will be doing those Chris LOL :-)

From vinh on Mon, Feb 01, 2010 at 07:01:22 from 75.77.22.187

Great run Sam! Awesome tempo/marathon paces! I think I'm gonna switch from gels to clif shot bloks...have you tried those yet?

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Mon, Feb 01, 2010 at 14:02:43 from 90.195.99.113

Clif shots, over here their small little shots of gue very gloopy not my cup of tea !

Maybe they are different over your end of the world LOL

From missy on Mon, Feb 01, 2010 at 14:25:05 from 70.56.98.145

Ok I don't get it..VPB?

Yeah Clif shots or Gu or Powergels all make me gag..Too thick. I'm trying out the ClifBloks even tho I prefer nothing..I might try adding something to water if I take water with me..I'm experimenting too...My thing is I don't want to catabolize muscle..So I need to carb Properly but not too much..

From vinh on Mon, Feb 01, 2010 at 14:47:59 from 75.77.22.187

Sam, Missy - Yea I was referring to the Clif Bloks. Way better than Gu, for me at least.

From Bonnie on Mon, Feb 01, 2010 at 14:55:31 from 128.196.228.134

Virtually Private Bathroom ...

;-). I am a pro at this, just ask and I will enlighten on the "best" places for VPB's

From Bonnie on Mon, Feb 01, 2010 at 15:02:48 from 128.196.228.134

PS I like PowerGel, it is liquid enough that I can take it with no water (and it has electrolytes). I can't chew anything during races - I love Clif Shot Bloks, but I swear they feel like they are going to take my fillings out (and you HAVE to take them with water).

From ChrisM on Mon, Feb 01, 2010 at 15:10:56 from 86.151.220.223

I guess it was

Visibile Potty Break! LOL

From Nan Kennard on Tue, Feb 02, 2010 at 18:07:21 from 174.51.250.151

Oh yes, virtually private bathrooms. Its like standing "behind" something while fully aware that people may be seeing you anyway. I did this at mile 22 in my last marathon and a spectator was in clear view watching me the whole time. I gave her a thumb up as I pulled up my shorts and continued on. I think its good to be comfortable with this so if it happens in a race you take it in stride. I drop my shorts on training runs all the time!

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Wed, Feb 03, 2010 at 06:24:02 from 78.32.130.9

Oh wow how did I miss this conversation so uplifting lol Nan your an animal :-)

I try to find bushes in honesty thick bracken lol

Bonnie, I am the same I can not chew when running never mind racing, I have alwasy used gu gel but I am not sure if it is those that have caused all my tummy problems!

I have been taking nothing like Missy it works for me, but not sure how long I can go running wise without re-fuelling, so its just a case of carry some energy gels and see ! again love this conversation he he he

From ChrisM on Wed, Feb 03, 2010 at 06:29:10 from 130.88.123.4

Sam have you tried SIS Go gels? They don't need water and I am ok with them

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Wed, Feb 03, 2010 at 07:23:07 from 78.32.130.9

Theyre the ones Go gels I got that wrong before, Yeah I do take them Chris, but 2 last times I used them I either threw up or went the toilet allot LOL and no they were NOT outta date :)

I will try them this weekend though for my 18 miler woohoo what joy I hope the weather is gonna be good :)

From ChrisM on Wed, Feb 03, 2010 at 07:30:57 from 130.88.123.4

That's odd since SIS go gels have water in them so should be less of a problem is you are sensitive to them, you shouldn't need to take water with them

Or just learn to not need gels, eat more breakfast instead!

From missy on Wed, Feb 03, 2010 at 12:38:39 from 70.56.98.145

I have never taken a gu or gel and thought..OH that helped...Deadpan..Nothing..negatory..nadda! For me I would prefer water and electrolytes is it. My body is slow to digest so They would have to inject sugar in my veins to get me going..lol.

I Have tons of Bathroom stories..lol..I will save um for a rainy day. Just told one of those bathroom stories at the dinner table the other night..my kids were squeeling with laughter. :P

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Thu, Feb 04, 2010 at 05:27:44 from 78.32.130.9

Ha ha bathroom stories make my hubby go mad he thinks its disgusting but hey he aint a runner so he has no idea LOL

Chris yeah I have always used Go gels, but this time round they have caused havoc with my tummy, so yeah I have been eating allot before long runs, and this weekend I am going to try them again fingers crossed eh! and I will eat more breakfast tooo LOL any excuse eh:)
