Triathlons are my New sport and I LOVE IT

Recent last few years  as I havent done much since I was 16/17yrs, on and off injuries, going out with Friends started. Operations on injuries- compartment syndrome front of the shin had small operation to release the pressure on the fascia.

Oct 2007.  Did the great north run.  ( I was in the elite ladies race, against Kara Goucher and Paula Radcliffe, Im sure u Americans will recall that race).

I was just in on my previous times from the Bath Half Marathon. I ran it as best as I could off my training & circumstances...

Decided to do my 1st Marathon with London looming in the following April I was in the ladies Elite race again.  So the training was on.  I realise now I didnt give my body enough time to recover as it did break down in the last 5 weeks of my training. Injury bound, with calf and hamstring problems I raced!

London Marathon, April 08 (Injury calf issues) 1st marathon  3hrs.12mins .30 secs

Dublin Marathon  Oct 08  3hrs.01mins.13  undulating and 1 toilet stuck/stop (LOL)

Bath Half 2007    1.26.35 hrs

Wilmslow half marathon english champs    1.25.39

18th lady  (With piriformis injury ).

Liverpool 10k 2008 Oct 37.42mins midst marathon training

Wirral 5k 2009 17.41mins off the back off marathon week

Track 3000ms 10.45mins  hmmm I ran this to get points for my club so I just did tactical and ran on 1st lady shoulder and sprinted at the end !

As a youngster

County Champion for Xcountry and

High Jump

and 1500ms track.

pbs aged 13 yrs old

800ms 2mins 16secs

1500ms 4mins 48 secs

high jump 1metre 53  (cant do this now) and I never trained for it as a kid, just competed alot for points for my club, usually spend 2 hours highjumping, and skip off to do an 800 or 1500ms race then go back to high jump, Wish I took the running more seriously!

Run on more than several occasions for my County against Ireland county of Dublin.

Top 50 finnisher at 14yrs of age in english nationals Xcountry.

-7 this morning but it did warm up to -3 for my run late afternoon.

Apart from it being extremely chilly, and everywere is iced up like a skating rink, it was a clear sky day with sunny intervals, I was looking forward to my run. After work, Paul Dylan and I went for a bite to eat at Neros mmmmmmm nice coffee :-)   then off to do some essential shopping for our new kitten, and other stuff. Then home and some chores to do, busy day today.

Then I finally got out on my run it was early evening my hip not too bad yay:)

2 miles into my easy run which was going to be 10 or so miles, I ran past a walker and there dog, it was off the lead but paid no interest in me, then 2 mins later bang I was on the floor, the dog jumped me from behind, but I sort of slid around tried hard to keep upright and then landed on my butt LOL well not really its pretty sore, I got up straight away probably out of embarrassment I jogged off on the ice, round the corner and sat down got my bearings and  got a bit of ice to my butt, stretched and off I went but by 7 miles I had had enough and headed home to make it 7.5 miles in 1hr 1 min, yes I had took pretty easy really 8 min pace 'ish.   It just had to be my sore hip that took the brunt of the fall too, so I iced again and stretched then a warm bath and ice again.

Im pretty annoyed I didnt got back and say something to the dog owner but what do you say what do they do ???

the dog wasnt attacking me just probably playing too rough.

Not a good day for snowy Ice Howard but I am alive and kicking and can still sort of run so hey ho ;-)

You have broken the blog again, look in the top right hand corner!

Glad you are in one piece after the dog incident, I always run away from them but if they come from behind you can't do that.

From jun on Thu, Jan 07, 2010 at 13:24:05 from 63.224.104.209

Way to get out there in the freezing cold. Too bad about the dog, but at least you are in good spirits about it.

Piriformis problem

sam I've had this problem for many years and had many different treatments, 2 weeks ago it got really bad [ maybe the cold weather left my muscles tight]

I tried the following exercises really helped and i got almost instant pain relief.

1/ do this door way stretch, standing on one leg lean forward then rotate your other hip down, see link http://runwitharthurlydiard.blogspot.com/2009/12/running-stretches.html

also pete magil's stretch with a towel helped me, see link http://runwitharthurlydiard.blogspot.com/2009/11/blog-post.html

and on a final note try this massage trick

http://www.healthynewage.com/sciatica-pain-relief.htm

hope these links will let you run pain free very soon.

brrr. so cold. glad you survived the dog encounter. and nice running with a great attitude. hope your hip is ok.

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Thu, Jan 07, 2010 at 16:29:03 from 90.201.147.218

Rick thanks so much for the links, I have been doing the tennis ball thing for a while now, but only when really needed its painful, but in the last few weeks I have ended up doing it twice a day ouch !

I do the towel stretch and something similar to the door stretch, but Im gonna go try it now too I think it may help more than the stretch I have been doing, thanks again Rick. I had this quite bad going into the half last year in the spring, and speedwork brought it on, and the physio thinks that it also caused the hamstring to go when I hit the track last Sept with Chris and the other men from the club. so I its back with a vengeance and my hammy gets tight when it hurts too ???? I am not happy as you probably know how annoying it is. but to race with it would be wrong for sure I need to get fitter before racing and not have this problem as much :-) (wow that was long sorry )

Sam.

I hope 'the one mile runners' door stretch works for you.

I think if it's going to work you will see a very rapid improvement!

also it's important to check that your feet do not point in or out as you run because this can put stress on the pinmormis muscles.

And I think using your hamstrings to pull your foot off the ground [ as in pose method] will add to your problems.

If you relax your leg after it has left the ground your knee should bend behind you through momentum [ this is the method Seb coe used, much less stress on your hams and butt].

Hope this helps :]

Sam, why do you seem to always have an accident during your runs? haha...good run despite the dog tackle.

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Fri, Jan 08, 2010 at 07:54:08 from 78.32.130.9

Rick Thankyou, I am seeing an improvement or was, before the incident yesterday my butt is sore today very sore.

Vin I am a clumsy clot thats why LOL
