Ran with my bestest friend and helped pace her. We were on track for sub-4 up until mile 20-21. This race was absolutely CRAZY!! Never ever run it unless you just want to run the half or enjoy large mass crowds. The first 13 miles of the race were off the strip and full of gradual uphill/downhill. It was boring but we paced really well. We were so excited to get on the strip at the halfway point (1:59 at the half) but as soon as we hit the strip all hell broke lose. There were 38,000 half marathoners and the last group 3:30 HMP had just been released.
Basically we spent 13 miles trying to pass walkers and make our way through the crowds. I have never seen so much madness in my life. It was like we were freaking cattle being herded down the strip. All of the water stations were out of water and I had to pour water for us. It truly was rediculous. I had to run in front of Julia because there was no way we could run side by side with all of the crowd.
Anyway I know I am being negative but with all that said she still set a 10 minute PR from SGM and ran a great race. Very, very proud of her and glad I could be a part of it.
My garmin measured 26.55 and I'm pretty sure I worked harder running up on the sidewalk and pushing through walkers to make my way through the maze than I did running. I am over it now because it was out of our control. Just wouldn't ever do this race again. All and all a great weekend with great friends.
My other friend Heather ran a 4:02 and set a 12 minute PR. And my cousin totally rocked the half in 1:33. He was the 400th finisher out of 38,000. (he did not have to deal with the crazy mass of runners luckily)
I'm sure I'll do a better recap on my personnel blog so check back later if you want more details. Or if you want to listen to me rant and rave more. My throat is serious sore from screaming "Half marathoners to the right." |
