50 min on the elliptical at the club house.  The radio at the club house is broken and I couldn't find my ipod so I spent the entire time contemplating a plan to come up with enough money to buy an Elliptigo.  I didn't come up with anything but it was a good distraction.

Short walk with the pup.  I jogged for 10 seconds (Izzy really wanted to chase a bird) and the massive knot seems to have moved to directly behind my knee and it feels like my lower leg may detach from my upper leg if I keep going.  I foam rolled again trying to work it out but I think I need to buy a tennis ball because the foam roller just isn't getting deep enough.

ugh, i'm sorry it's still giving you trouble. i know that feeling and it is definitely very painful. what has worked for me in the past is to sit on a chair so your knee is bent. i find it's easier to get to the deeper tissue because the muscles aren't as taut as they are when your leg is extended. you really have to dig deep, deep and press very hard. if using a tennis ball, the same thing -- sit in a chair and use your body weight to press the tennis ball deep into the sore spot. good luck. if all else fails, james has a gua sha kit. rounds of pain for all! :)

Thanks Allie I feel like a big baby but it really is like debilitating pain! I'm having a hard time pin pointing exactly where it is but I'll try the method you mentioned. I'm eying the apple on my desk as we speak and wondering if it might do the trick...

I'm glad you're not trying to run through this. A lacrosse ball would probably work too. Just walk by the high school this afternoon and see what you can find for free :-)

Hope this clears up for you pronto!

Your forgetting I live in Payson. I think the only sports they have are roping and pig wrestling. :) There might be a small chance I could find a baseball though...

rachelle-- so sorry friend. how about Jorge? I bet he would have some tips as to where it is steming from. He had a great resource he showed me on his computer for trigger points.

Jorge is out of town right now openning a new Costa. Hopefully he will be back this weekend. He really rocks at sports massage btw. You should totally get one before SGM. My Mom kept asking me who beat me up because my legs were completely bruised. You know they did a good job when you leave bruised and battered. :)

Funny how we distract ourselves on those darn machines! I hope you're able to get a good ball to dig in deep and get that knot gone, for good.

From Kira Bell on Thu, Sep 20, 2012 at 15:33:58 from 74.220.196.214

Well first off, I commend you for not running. Less impact is always going to help with faster recovery time. I know because I still spend a lot of my time on the good ol elliptical/ arc machine at golds! lol I have a fragile old woman body! Who seems to injure herself easier then the average Joe my age, but Oh well! You live with what you got and are grateful for what you have. :) I hope everything starts to feel better.. and you're always welcome to come to the gym in SF.. maybe we will run into each other!

Here comes the harbinger of doom - sounds like a popliteal bursa to me. Prodding and rolling and playing tennis with it, will only aggravate it. Stop all exercise and eat ice cream - morph into an otiose wastrel:)

Your body is telling you to rest; if you don't, you'll be sorry.

From Rachelle on Thu, Sep 20, 2012 at 16:24:25 from 199.190.170.30

Oh great so if I do indeed have popliteal bursa (all these big words make me cringe) what do you suggest I do? The pain started in the upper right calf and now is most notable right below the knee. It hurts like the dickens when I jog at all but walking/ellipticaling do not seem to irritate it.

From Rachelle on Thu, Sep 20, 2012 at 16:27:47 from 199.190.170.30

Kira - I miss your face! I would love to come back to the gym (well not really but I would love to see you) but I just hate leaving my pup in the mornings when I really have everything I need to exercise at home. I shall make a return if I return to running over the winter. :)

From Bonnie on Thu, Sep 20, 2012 at 16:44:38 from 150.135.115.52

I guess it could be poplieal bursa, but I had the same kind of pain (right behind my knee, it felt deep and it hurt bad) - and it ended up being hamstring. Trying rolling a little higher up (even though that isn't where it hurts), about 2-3" higher than directly behind your kneecap -- I do agree with Bam that you shouldn't roll directly behind your knee, there are a lot of nerves and whatnot there, and you can aggravate rather than help.

Good luck Rachelle, take it easy and come back strong!!

From Kam on Thu, Sep 20, 2012 at 17:01:35 from 68.66.163.179

Rachelle, I'm sorry you are aching a bit. But the silver lining is somebody used the word "harbinger" on the blog. Thanks, Bam.

From Kelli on Thu, Sep 20, 2012 at 19:59:38 from 67.172.235.55

Oh dang! Sorry about this pain, I hope it is nothing BIG, but at least the season is over and you can take the time needed to heal it up right!

From Bam on Fri, Sep 21, 2012 at 06:34:20 from 89.204.171.86

I was joking about the bursa! But do be careful not to poke around behind your knee. To paraphrase Bonnie, there's some serious stuff in there behind the knees. Rest and get it checked out. The sooner you have it looked at the better.

From Bonnie on Fri, Sep 21, 2012 at 07:33:42 from 150.135.115.52

yes, an inflammed whatnot could cause a lot of pain.
