The 3200m was not quite as AWESOME as yesterday, but it was pretty
sweet anyway! I got ganged up on by the Orem and Timpview girls! My
legs were a bit stiff and tired from yesterday from the get-go, but not
awful. It was a crazy race, way tactical and lots of surging
throughout. I came into the race with a time basically tied for 1st,
but since I'd won the 1600m, it seemed like I was "the one to beat" or
something. As a side note... at one point, the announcer said something
like, "We have Hilton in the lead, she won the 1600m yesterday..." and
I did a little dance... it was way fun. :) Anyway, I think I got passed
about 20 times and passed them back about the same number, it was
insane. The whole race was pretty up-in-the air until the last lap
where Krystal Harper and I pulled away and I surged at the start of the
lap and she got me on the last 300m and ended up beating me by 4
seconds. I really gave everything I had, though, so there aren't really
any regrets about the race, which is all you can really ask for, I
guess. Holt got my splits as 1:19, 1:25, 1:26, 1:25, 1:27, 1:29, 1:24,
1:18. The crazy thing is, Krystal must've run a 1:14 last lap, since
mine was still a 1:18, and it was the fastest of all my splits! So, I
just re-broke the school record and PR-ed by 9 seconds! And got 2nd
place in the state, SWEET!
Then I had the 800m, ouch. My legs were totally sucked dry from the
3200m this morning, so it was rather questionable. Even with ample
warmup, my legs still were stiff and sore for it. By the time I was
200m into the race, my legs were tired and I felt hammered. So, I
gutted it out and got the place I was ranked to begin with - 8th - with
a pretty slow time - 2:24 - and finished my last high school race EVER.
It
feels odd; I think that it hasn't even really hit me yet (otherwise, I
think I would've started crying) and I'm nervous for how different
college is going to be. My years of high school track and XC have been
awesome, my coaches are amazing (the best ever) and it's sad for it to
be over. (DS3 237.7) (V spike 15.2) (DD spike 52.5)
When I got home, I found an awesome/hilarious message on our answering machine from Coach Patrick Shane of BYU. Click HERE to HEAR! He apparently has forgotten that I attended his XC camp this summer. And I think he's a little late for recruiting, since I've already signed onto USU's team. Funny, though, and a definite confidence boost!
Awesome job, way to cap out your high school career. The best is yet to come. You'll have to run with the Logan FRB crew once in a while when you get the USU.
Congrats on an awesome state meet and high school career. You will love competing in college- it's a whole new ballgame, running against the best (even some future Olympians). Train as much as you possibly can this summer to help you be real prepared for your cc season. Eat well, and GET MORE SLEEP (to quote you)!
The dance was AWESOME (and hilarious). Like I said before, great state meet. I'm so proud of you! You will do awesome things in college and beyond. Not just in running either. We will miss you. I wish I could take credit as one of your awesome coaches but I really didn't do much other than give you a lot of crap!
Great job Ruth! I echo Jon. I regret not getting the base I needed the summer after my senior year. Get sleep and get in the mileage you will want so you'll be ready for cross country. Your college years will be so fun and enjoyable and you'll gain even more great experience. I think you might be in that future olympian category :)
It was amazing to watch you Ruth! Great job on all your races! I was so excited when you won the 1600 it got me pumped up and I decided I had to do good. You really inspire me and I wish you good luck in your future :)
DANG GIRL!!! You, seriously, are the prime example of "you get what you put into it"! Way to go out there and do something amazing, not all of us have the guts for that.
Hey Ruth - Though I am a late comer as far as kids are concerned ( I only did senior year of high school for xc/track and then two years at college on the xc team), If there's one thing I've learned it has been to make the most of each and every opportunity. I agree with all of the other bloggers on here that you possess the determination, the grit, the guts, and the sheer willpower to do anything you want, which when added to your natural ability is a phenomenal gift that I think is only going to become that much clearer and more defined as you embark on the next stage of your running career. Don't sweat xc in college. Yeah it's a big step up from high school, especially D-I or D-II, but you will do great. :) It's going to be such an awesome experience. Just concentrate on getting that base mileage in early on, and rest as much as you can. With freshman year getting used to classes can be a doozy, especially if you're on a school sports team. We know you're going to do awesome though! Congrats again on the very cool 2 day huge breakthroughs. I mean you broke school records, huge PRs, and laid it all on the line... you can't ask for more than that!

Congratulations on both PR's, and a call from coach Patrick Shane. Yea, who the heck is Ruth Hilton after all? A very important event in the history of FRB. BYU starts paying attention to our high schoolers.
If BYU offers you a scholarship, will you go?
