Long-Term Running Goals:

1.  Enjoy running 'til I drop dead - and put that off as long as possible.
2.  Don't get burn out :-)

Personal:

I herniated/ruptured a disk (L4/L5) in my back in December, 2005.  I told my orthopedic surgeon I wanted to start running.  He said "You'll never run again.".  What a challenge!  So...I started running.

Since then I've lost about 50 pounds, ran 13 marathons and a number of other races.

I am still a clydesdale runner (over 200 lbs), have a large frame, big bones, and not built like a runner at all.  I'm not fast.  I mostly run to have some time to myself and keep in shape.

16 around out and back in Smithfield.  Loss of 350 ft towards Hyde Park, gain of 350 feet a little way up Smithfield canyon and then back home again.  Overall I felt pretty good and could keep going.  7:33/mile average.

I found a deal on Brooks Trance online for $50.  I'll try them and see if they help my foot at all.

9.4 on a treadmill.  7:18/mile.

Had a fun day skiing yesterday with family and friends.  Unfortunately I wasn't watching where I was going on my first run and crashed.  I had a camera in the chest pocket of my coat, which bruised the left front of my ribs.  The ski trip was worth it, but I taking deep breaths is difficult.  The run went well with short quick breaths the whole way.  It should be (hopefully) better by Boston (1 week 6 days).

8 miles out and back at noon in North Logan.  Ribs are still very sore.  Can't breath in deep, cough, sneeze, or laugh without some pain.  Ran taking smooth short breaths.  Still had a decent run at 7:26/mile.  1 week 5 days to Boston.

Race: Boston Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:15:36

Great run! The Boston is really one of a kind. The spectators were awesome.

The weather was good (50's), but have been training in 30's and 40's. I felt the tail wind some times, but a lot of the time the air seamed stagnant, which added to the heat. At every aid station past mile seven, I was grabbing two cups of water and dumping it on my head, and grabbing another to drink. By the end my feet were sloshing in my shoes like I'd been running in the rain. :-).

I started out a little too fast, and felt it at the end. the last mile was a little over 9 min/mile. Overall average was 7:28/mile. Ended up at 3:15:36.

Overall, I felt it was a pretty good effort considering the injuries I've had over the last year (back, calf, knee, foot, and ribs). Around the second week in August I couldn't run at all, so I felt good about the run.

Maybe it is time to get a little more serious, lose some weight, eat a little better, add some more miles to my runs, and work on speed. I may soon be out of the Clydesdale division in the marathons here in Utah.

Interesting fact: My Garmin 305 and several other's read 26.45 miles for the course--probably because of all the weaving in and around people, etc.

Five miles at 7:14/mile. I was originally going to do these five as a slow post marathon jog to loosen up and get the blood flowing. After starting to run, I felt really good, so I increase my pace, and then some more.

This was a weird run. I did it faster than I thought I could and I felt I wasn't pushing it that hard--especially after three days following the Boston Marathon. My legs were sore the 19th (day after), but the 20th (yesterday) they really came back quickly. Today they felt like a Monday after a Saturday 20 miler.

After this run I am questioning a little whether I pushed it as hard as I could have at Boston. But then again, the last mile of the marathon I was very burnt-up, focusing on not walking. Interesting sport this long distance running is...maybe I should keep it up ;-)

20 miles out and back in Smithfield. 7:46 AP.

Went up to Summit, Down Hillside Dr, to the North end of Hyde Park.  This was a loss of about 300 Feet.

From there I turned North to Smithfield and up Smithfield canyon to the campgrounds.  A gain of about 1000 feet.  Turned around and came back.  At mile 20 I was slowing down back up the origional 300 feet, so I took a little break.  Turned off the garmin, walked a few blocks (to the top of the hill) and slowly jogged in the last two miles.  I can tell my legs are still a little tired from Boston 12 days ago.

It was a good run.  Now I can taper for the Ogden marathon in three weeks :-).
