Personal:

I started more dedicated running and racing in my thirties.  Eventually I developed symptomatic bradycardia and SVT which required a cardiac pacemaker implant and a cardiac cath ablation.  It has taken a long time to get back to running consistently again.  Counting my blessings and trying to remain more balanced with fitness.

Decided to go long today since a snow storm is rolling through tonight.  Made this a depletion run so I didn't have anything to eat before or during.  Just took it real easy because the body didn't want to go and I'm lacking sleep as well (8:06 avg).  One problem I'm having is keeping my forearms and hands warm in cold temps (below 30).  Anything over 15 mi and I can feel them become dangerously cold.  I wanted to go 20 mi, but I cut it short because my arms were becoming painfully numb.  As always, advice is welcome.

Nice long run. My hands get the coldest on me as well and I have been trying to find the right combo of gloves/mittens to keep them warm. I have thought about buying some of those hand warmer bags that warm up when in contact with air but haven't yet. I just bought some wool mittens from the army surplus store and wore them once and my hands were pretty warm. Good luck!

My hands don't usually get cold while running and I use the same pair of wool gloves all the way down to -15 deg. However I've had a couple experiences that might be simular to what happened to you. After coming in the house from a long run in the cold I delayed changing out of my running clothes which were damp from sweat. after cooling down I started feeling a little cold and my lower arms and hands got numb. my fingers went white and were completly numb. I have read that your body will slow the blood flow to your extremities if your core is in danger of getting to cold because your exremities act as radiators to cool the blood. I figured it must have had something to do with my fuel stores being low. You mentioned that you hadn't eaten. If your hands were warmer earlier in the run I wonder if it's more an issue of being well fueled and keeping your core warm than gloves. I don't know if this helps but I thought I'd throw it out there.

I think both of you guys are spot on. The lack of fuel caused my body to change system functioning and the type of clothes didn't provide enough warmth. I'm going try wool gloves. Now I need to figure out how to keep dry overall. Probably need to bite the bullet and buy some Under Armour. The stuff is expensive though and I still think I would become soaked. I'm looking forward to warmer temps.

If you haven't tried wool gloves I think you will like them. If I wear anything wind proof my hands get way to sweaty. I have some Under Armour but I don't think it works any better than other cheap synthetic shirts I have. I don't know if you have Kohl's stores out there but they have a lot of tech shirts in their sportswear dept. I've gotten some for as little as $7. I like anything that has the feel of cotton but is 100% synthetic against the skin. You can pull these strait out of the washing machine and they feel almost dry. I always wear 2 of these and then either a fleece or cotton sweatshirt over them. I'm very quick to shed a layer and tie it around my waist or put it back on before I get too sweaty. I've had very good luck with just those 3 layers in some pretty cold temps. I add a 4th layer if it's very windy and cold but I'm always quick to shed or add layers if winds at my back or front. Aren't we all looking forward to some nice 50 deg. mornings.
