42.000.000.000.0042.00

Began training for a new marathon this week.  I recorded my miles for the week as 42, but had not yet joined the fast running blog.  Want this recorded so I can look back at my overall progress.  Nothing crazy this week.  Just wanting to get back into things.  Last week I did stationary bike at the gym and a few other cross-training/core training exercises.

Obviously, I didn't do all my mileage in one day.  The 52 miles were spread out throughout the week.  Again, I hadn't joined the blog yet, but still want my overall mileage recorded for the benefit of future training.  Two of my runs were a bit harder this week.  Did a 3-mile run on the treadmill in 19:19.  Did a 7-mile run outdoors in 52:30.  Felt much less sore this week from the race.  However, I still have a weird sensation at night when I try to sleep.  Kind of like the car has been turned off, but there's still a little bit of rumbling going on.

Again, this report applies to the overall week.  I didn't join this blog until June, yet I want this recorded for my own personal records.  To be able to look back at my complete training program for marathon #2.  This was a strong week for me, but also a little bit painful.  My achilles were a tad bit sore.  Cautiously persevered throughout the week.  Did a 14 mile run and felt ok.  Will taper a little bit next week for the Litchfield Road Race.

7.1 miles is an odd distance for a race. I never heard of it, but I'm a novice. I suggest a square root of 19 race. :-)

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 14:22:11

Congratulations on the improvement. Very good time for a guy that could at one point bench 345 lb. Which would indicate fast twitch fiber dominance.

From rockness18 on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 15:52:46

thank you. there's very little to boast about in my running past. However, I'm really beginning to enjoy this as a fairly new outlet. Hopefully I have room for significant growth.

From rockness18 on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 15:55:12

Also, enjoyed the square root suggestion.

Great job! Looks like your wieght is coming down as well as you times. Keep it up. BTW-I do think soda of any kind puts a damper on running and health in general. But I don't eat any sugar and can really feel a differance in my overall health and esp. in running.

Ran 4 miles uphill in 45 min-

Ran last 5 miles (rolling hills) in 38

Final mile was 6:45

All done in early afternoon- 78-80 degrees and sunny

Ran same course 2 weeks ago- 9 min. slower

Weighed in today at 188lbs

That's 14 lb loss since May 1st...100% diet adjustment

Could easily have run longer

10.000.000.000.0010.00

Ran with a friend this morning who's done 18 marathons, 12 under the 3hr mark

We held a steady pace through 10 miles of rolling hills- 1hr, 20min

I expressed my goal of an eventual BQ time and was curious as to how realistic a goal this might be (having just run a marathon at 4:12)

He discouraged me from basing anything on a first time marathon and expressed his opinion, based on our run this morning, that I could presently run about a 3:30

He encouraged me to stay focussed, not to add to much too quickly and that with steady improvement this summer I could at least run a 3:30, if not qualify for Boston

Felt good after our run.  Will probably take tomorrow off.  Bench pressed 275 last week, but have vowed to changed my lifting routine...good bye heavy weights (all it's really good for these day is vanity)

Entered a 5k in West Hartford today- 1st 5k I've ever run

Felt very stiff- jogged the entire course as a warm-up (kind of scary, what am I becoming?)

Mile 1:  ran hard (rolling hills, mostly uphill)- 6:30

Mile 2: more rolling hills (one very steep, uphill, ouch!)- 7:30

Mile 3: ahh, mostly downhill (flattened out for the last 1/2 mile)- right around 7:00?

Final stretch- pretty much maintained the final mile pace

Felt a little frustrated in mile 2- a handful of runners passed me

Felt much better in the final stretch- nobody passed me (of course I didn't pass anyone else, but hey, happy I held my place)

Use this as learning experience. You should have been able to pick that last mile back up to a 6:30, but you have to learn to kick start the legs again after they are tired. That will come with time and training. I think you did very well for you 1st 5k, they are a tough distance and sometimes we just let them get the better of us.

From rockness18 on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 15:01:41

Thanks for the insight. This is definitely a learning process. I will hold on to your comments.

Ran a nice slow, steady pace today through rolling hills (9 min. pace)

Very relieved that my energy level seems back to normal...a little sore from yesterday, but felt good again

Ran 14 miles today!  Legs finally seem recovered from last Sunday

Before running, did 30 min. of weights in the gym- out of curiosity benched 225 lbs 6x- strength is a little down, but not that much considering my weight loss and running program...at this stage I am willing to let go of strength and focus more on tone...no longer spending much time with squats- legs are getting a good enough workout...the calf machine is still valuable

Ran first 4 at 9 min pace on the nose

Ran next 5 in 36:20- just over a 7:16 pace

Returned to a 9 min pace for the last 5 miles

Felt fairly good at the end

Jogged four miles at 9min pace on treadmill.  Did leg work...been staying consistent- 3x week in the gym (30min workouts) + evening crunches

Finished leg work and did 2 more miles on treadmill (15min)

Staying focussed on making that magic 7:30min pace seem easier

Last November I could keep a 7:30 for only 2 miles tops...now it can be easily achieved at the end of a grueling workout...would like 7:30 to feel like 9:00 did last November...seems achievable

Weighed in at 184 lbs- down from 202lbs May 1st.

Well, officially signed up for the Bay State Marathon in October

Ramped it up today with an 18-miler through fairly challenging hills (80 degrees)

Kept a nice, slow controlled pace...miles 1-3 flat, 4-5 uphill (fairly steep), 6-7 downhill (very steep), 8-11 flat, 12-13 uphill (very steep), 14-15 downhill (fairly steep), 16-18 flat

Hoping to build up my leg strength, which failed me at mile 22 in April's marathon

Energy wise, I felt like I could go an extra 10 miles, yet my legs were definitely spent at the end by the hills

Got lost on my way to the race...was supposed to turn left at a restaurant that no longer exists...got there 5 minutes before starting time.

By the grace of God my ankle did not hurt this morning (despite a little bit of a sprain)...ran a good steady pace through light hills...warm (75-80 degrees), with a good bit of humidity, but not overbearing.

If I'd have known how close I was to breaking 35 minutes, I'd have picked it up more at the end...felt good...never had to gasp for air.  Overall, felt good and am beginning to experience a little bit of fruit for my labor.

Had my best day running in years

Jogged 3.5 miles at about an 8 1/2 min pace up to a race course

Decided to run our city's 3-mile run on my own...started out with a good, strong pace.  Thought I'd see how far I could take it.  Began to second guess my pace on an uphill slope on the second mile...put my head down and stayed strong.  Kept my pace throughout the third mile and coasted in for the finish.  Had to double check my watch...18:21!  What?  Sure enough, 3 miles in 18:21.  I'm starting to feel a second gear that hadn't existed since college.

Ran one 400 on the track to see what I could do...69 seconds.  Decided I'd save speedwork for later in the week.  Jogged 3.5 miles home.

Big correction to make...went out and measure this "3-mile" course and it was more like 2.8.  Still an improvement to me, yet would translate to closer to 19 1/2 minutes.

Weight: 0.00
Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
5.003.000.000.008.00

Ran over lunch break...very hot and humid- 5 miles at a 9 min. pace

Walked a quarter mile and then ran a three mile tempo to see if yesterday was a fluke...absolutely not!  Ran it in 19:04.  I feeling more comfortable with my new weight and am beginning to "find" my legs.  In college, did a lot of conditioning for baseball, but never distance running.  In the off-season, we would do plyametrics + a weekly 3-mile run...never broke 20-minutes.  This is all new territory for me.  Haven't weighed 185 since high school- 20 years ago!

This blog has been a good way to keep motivated.  Not only charting my own progress, but gaining insight through observation of other people's work-out schedules.

Had a great run today!

Planned to do a slow run on course with steep hills

Noticed a 7 1/2 time at the point of mile one and decided to test my improvement

Kept 7 1/2 minute pace through first 3 miles- fairly flat

Kicked it in an extra gear for 2 miles worth of steep incline- accomplished a 38:12 time through mile 5 (at the top of the hill)- 7:38 overall pace; my best previous time for this distance was 45 minutes

Kept just under a 7:30 pace for just over 4 miles (2 miles being a fairly strong decline) on the final part of the course- total time= 1:08:25 for a little bit over 9 miles- felt strong at the end

My 5k got rained out yesterday, probably for the better (was curious to see my improvement)

Did a progressive long run today- weather was overcast and wet (good running conditions)

First mile warm-up- 9  min pace

Hit a 5-mile course and did first lap in 46:30- tired and groggy

2nd 5 miles- 41:40- much more comfortable pace

3rd 5 miles- 36:03- felt fine- shorts were soaked, so legs began to feel heavy

Slowed down for the last 5- 48 min

walked final mile home

Total of 21 miles run- 3:01:13

Tired, but a good tired.  Forgot power bars, but survived on 2- 20 ounce gatorades stashed at the loop.  Legs felt good,  but heavy due to soaked shorts and shoes.

This will put me over 60-miles in a week for the first time ever!

I have really come to appreciate running.  In college I hated it!  Perhaps it was the once a week three mile runs in Chicago in the middle of winter and killing myself to do it in 20-21 minutes.  Never really improving.  My outlet was sports and since graduating I have been unable to find something that ignites my competitive juices.  In 1995, I began to run a little bit and killed myself in a 5-mile "Turkey Trot" (35 minutes) only to come in like 200th place.  I didn't really get it at that point.  The gym has always been a tremendous outlet for keeping healthy and conditioned, yet it is hard to stay motivated by goals on the bench press, stairmaster, or squat rack.  More recently I have begun to see how my competitive nature can be applied to running- looking for a personal best, running different courses at different distances, accomplishing new feats.  It has been equally encouraging to see my wife begin to pick up running and even the girls start to show interest.  I'm unable to get my wife to join the blog- but she's now training for a half-marathon (after 6 kids!).  She did a 5k last week in 30 minutes...it was small race and she won a medal for her age division.  Now she's hooked!

Today was a challenging day

Did a 1-mile warmup at a 9 1/2 minute pace...thought, "oh boy!"

Legs were a bit sore front yesterday's weight training and I was definitely sluggish

My initial desire was to run 5-miles hard, which included 2-miles up all uphill

Ran mile-2 at a 7:10 pace and made a quick mental adjustment...15 minute tempo runs

So I fininished off the first 15 minutes by keeping a 7 min running pace

The next 15 minutes were closer to a 9 min pace

Third 15 minutes, all uphill, was at a 7:30 pace (sun went behind clouds)...for the last 5 minutes, I felt a good, strong burn in my legs (breathing was fine)

Fourth 15 minutes were slow again, sun came out again, and I was beginning to really feel it...fortunately the last 5 minutes of this segment was all downhill (90 degree heat!)

Fifth 15 minutes, I began to think "oh boy" again...it was still downhill and I ran a seven minute pace until things flattened out (6minutes or so) and then hung on to a 7:30 pace for a minute or two until adjusting to "enough's enough"...I jogged the remainder at a 9-9 1/2 pace.

I do think I had one last tempo run in me, but with the heat and no water, I was being careful not to kill myself at the end.

Total of 10 miles in 1:26:03- definitely a mind over matter type of day!

Weight is down to 183 lbs...25lb weight loss this year (still bench 225 x 5)

Welcome to the blog. Nice run today...glad to hear you are seeing improvement and that the Blog is helping keep you (and at least vicariously, your wife) motivated. Keep on logging your runs, tracking your progress and eating right and your running will improve, your weight will continue to drop and you will see an improvement in your life overall. Be sure to train smartly and not increase your mileage too quickly lest injury slow you down.

BTW, it is cool to see a Pastor on the Blog!

From rockness18 on Wed, Jul 09, 2008 at 21:38:14

thanks! Having checked out your blog, I will take your words to heart. If I add a few miles each week, do you think I'd be ok to go into the 70's in August? Or should I remain in the 60's for a while? Thus far my legs feel great. In fact, I've been disciplining myself not to increase too quickly. At the same time, it's all new territory and I don't want to do anything to jeapordize my overall training.

From jtshad on Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 09:52:26

With only a couple of months on the blog, I don't know exactly where you have been or what race you are training for. From what you have posted, I would stay in the 60's for July then slowly and miles in August to reach peak mileage in the 70's. I would add some of the miles during two-a-days and not just make each run longer and try to get over 10+ each day. This is a good way to increase mileage, add some speedwork and keep some recovery miles in your schedule.

Good luck. what is the fall marathon you are training for?

From rockness18 on Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 21:44:09

thanks...I'll be running in the "Bay Marathon" in Lowell, MA (third weekend in October). It's supposedly a fairly flat and fast one. July and August are two of the few months in my schedule in which I can probably get two-a-days, so it's a perfect time for me to peak in mileage. What distance would you suggest for speedwork? 200's? 400's? 800's? Combination of the three? I've been learning alot from observation, yet most of those I observed are far more advanced and experienced than I.

From jtshad on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 10:21:22

For marathon training, the longer the interval (up to a point) typically the better for maintaining the speed with the needed endurance. I would do at least 400m/.25M or even 800m splits. I don't dp traditional track speedwork, but I do a lot of fartleks (same thing, just on the road) and or sustained MP/tempo runs at least once a week.

Good luck with your training...stay healthy and have fun!

Was going to run in the afternoon, but couldn't go outside due to thunderstorms

Endured 7 miles of a slow run on the treadmill (9:15 pace)

Did 1/2 of upperbody weights

Pleasant surprise in the evening...meeting was done an hour early, got home and everybody was out and the weather was beautiful...quickly got out for a run

Cool, crisp evening...had to discipline myself to keep things slow...kept it at about a 8:45 pace for 8 miles...felt like I could run all evening.

My legs felt tired today...had decided to run a 5k tonight, but was second guessing it this morning.

Took 5 of the girls to the beach today, so mom could prepare for an open house

Kept hydrated all day long, just in case I felt I had the energy to run in the evening

Got home at 4pm, took a nap, woke up at 5pm and decided to go for it

Felt even though this may not be the best 5k I can run, it's the bigger picture that counts- staying focussed on the big race in October.

Jogged three miles to the race area...realized any fast mileage might be a challenge today, but began to get into a "mind over matter mode"

Race...mile 1 was fairly flat and I broke 6 minutes...mile 2 began to go downhill so I pushed it a bit, however, I unexpectedly approach almost 3/4 of a mile's worth of steady uphill...finished mile 2 at almost a 7:40 pace...the beginning of mile 3 was at least 1/4 mile downhill, but unfortunately I was unable to take advantage of the hill and was just regaining my breath...by the bottom of the hill I actually recovered and felt fairly descent...did the final 1.1 in about 6:30.  Overall time= 20:10

I never looked to see what overall place I was in, but received 2nd place within age division.  There were probably only 40-50 runners all together...I'm guessing I placed somewhere around 10-15th.  A college kid set the course record somewhere in the 15's.

Decided to see how close I could get to BQ marathon pace on a 20k route.

Ran through rolling hills to Goshen and back...exactly 12.5 miles...80 degrees out

Ran a little over 7:30 pace for 1st 10k- 47:47 (more uphill than downhill)...jogged around a building looking for water...no luck...oh well, the sun began to hide behind the clouds...decided to get into the frame of mind as if this was the final 10k of a marathon...didn't worry about pace on the way back...just ran hard...really had to hang on for the final 3/4 of a mile...2nd half time- 47:22- almost at marathon pace, but not quite...with a little bit of water, I may have gotten it.  Next time I'll plant a gatorade bottle or two.

I guess "fast funs" are all relative

Ran 2 1/4 down to the track...wanted to measure out some "speedwork"

Jogged one lap, then picked it up for 3/4 mile in 4:23 min.

Ran 4 x 880:  2:46, 2:47, 2:54, 2:50- ran "comfortably hard"- definitely pushed it, yet had a little bit extra held back in the tank (thinking of tomorrow's 20-miler)

Jogged 2 more laps and ran 2 1/4 home

It was suprisingly easier running home...perhaps the cob webs were all out

8 miles total.

Challenging run today...ran with Ed.

Headed out 7am...fairly warm, but many shade patches...did a 12-mile course through fairly hilly terrain...planted two gatorades at mile 12- went down fast...did a 8-mile loop through some challenging hills...seemed like everything was uphill, the sun was now shining bright and it was getting in the 80's, yet kept a solid pace...finished the final 1/4 mile with a strong run (not quite sprint, but close).

Ran 5 miles at just over an 8:15 pace...felt good.  Actually, didn't plan to break 70 miles until August.  Worked hard to get up to 60, but now am working hard not to add too much too fast.  Still have no injuries, aches or pains.

After close to 600 miles, retired my Asics and broke out a pair of Sauconys- felt awesome!

Did an hour's worth of weight work at the gym- squats, bench, core exercises...still feel very healthy and energetic.

Head off for a mission trip to Arkansas tomorrow.  Will make an effort to run each day, but will not have access to a computer until Saturday.  I'll enter weekly mileage then.

I'm glad you liked the Saucony Tangent shoes. If you can afford it I would buy two pairs of shoes that you can rotate each day. Make sure you don't increase your mileage too fast, because you can get an injury if it's more than 10%.

Very nice running your doing.

Had difficult time getting out last week due to mission trip.  Probably inspired me a bit for today...Everything came together- rested legs, 11 hours of sleep, perfect weather (no sun, high 60's).

Ran the same 10k route as two weeks ago (measured 6.25 each way).  Did first 10k in 44:59- felt great!  Walked 1/4 mile and headed back.  Ran second 10k in 43:59.  Could have kept same pace for at least another 5-10 miles.

Total time and distance = 1:28:57/12.5 miles (7:07 pace)

Well, I'm beginning to feel as though a BQ might be within reach.  Just need to stretch out my pace to endure the mileage.  7:30 has become quite comfortable and hill running is becoming much more managable.  My hope is to improve my pace through a little extra speed work over the next month.  Will do another 20 mile run this week as well.  Still feel strong...perhaps the low mileage week (last week) will help me in the long run.

Did 20 minutes of weights- still bench 225lbs x 5...very surprised I haven't lost much strength...will taper out most of my strength training a week or two before the marathon.  Personally, I feel as though it is beneficial to my running.  As long as I have been lifting weights, I have never had a major injury of any sort (other than being struck by 90 mph fastballs).

Ran 6.25 in 52:10.  Will run in a 5k tonight...plan to jog to the course (3 miles), so will have gotten 9 miles in today before the race.  May not help me to achieve best time, but am trying to keep my overall workout regiment in focus.  After this Fall marathon I want to focus more on the shorter distances and races to achieve best possible times.  However, for marathon training, I want to achieve the best possible workout.  The 5k will be treated as a tempo run.

I am not sure if the last two weeks of training in Florida have resulted in any improvement...I'm hoping to have at least maintained.  This next month will be very key in helping me determine if I'm ready to pursue a BQ pace for the Bay State Marathon.  There is a 20k race in New Haven September 1 which will also be helpful in determining my progress.

Jogged 2.8 to race course...ran a 19:09.  This was the same course I ran earlier in the summer...off road course.  Ran the first mile in 6:05...maintained until about 3/4 of mile two...steep uphill...closer to 6:30 on second mile...finished strong.  Felt good.  12 miles for the day.

Started my morning with the intention of a slow "recovery" run.  Did 30 minutes of weight training, followed by a run towards Morris.  Ran first five miles in 43:52...felt really good.  Decided to pick up the pace and run the next four miles in 27:55 and the final mile in 8 minutes flat as a "cool down".  Feel great!

Hope I haven't overextended myself for the 20-mile run tomorrow.

Solid 20 mile run today.  A few strong hills within the route.  Ran the first 12 in 1:37 and the next 8 in just over an hour for a total time of 2:37:42 (overall pace of 7:53).  Definitely had enough in the tank to feel confident about a strong marathon finish.  Feel good about progress.

Thanks for the comment on my run. You had a great run today yourself. With your recent training you should feel confident about your marathon. Which one are you running?

I will be running the Bay State Marathon in Massachussetts. I crashed and burned towards the end of my first marathon, but do feel much better about the upcoming one. Keep up the good work!

Same thing for me in my first marathon. I didn't have much of a base and it showed.

You have been putting in a lot of miles so I am sure with a strong base this marathon will be much different. You should get that BQ.

Ran 10 miles today...ran the first five on my own in 43:14.  Joined my family at the track and ran four with my wife- 9:55, 8:43, and the last two in 19:10.  Ran one mile on my own on the track in 6:05- ran fairly easy to see how I'd feel...surprised at the ease of this after yesterday's 20 mile run.  I'm going to run a 20k in 2 weeks, so will concentrate a little more on my diet- more fruits and vegetables, less power bars and more healthy snacks.  Still maintaining my weight at 182lbs.

Very pleased with my run today.  I was a little sore from the speedwork yesterday, but really felt as though I was due for a good tempo/type run.  Warmed up for 1/4 mile and then did the uphill route to Morris.  Really pushed it through the steep hills.  Total time for 5 miles up= 36:18 (7:16 pace).  Ran a steady clip back down the hill across the back route and did 4.5 miles in 29:22 (6:32 pace).  Jogged 1/4 mile back to the gym.  Overall, 9.5 miles in 65:40 (6:54 pace) + .5 mile at around a 8:30 pace.  Very encouraging progress.

Pastor,

You're running great. One thing I've learned about long distance running is it's a practice in patience. I know you have plenty of that or you wouldn't be in your line of work. Anyway, stay balanced and patient in your running as well and a BQ will happen in time. God Bless.

This was a day I just had to push...felt very, very average.  Jogged 2 miles down to the track...pretty windy out today.  Decided to run a 10k at a good strong pace on the track.  On the first lap realized the wind just basically made me want to quit.  Struggled mentally every half lap and by mile 3 was telling myself...3 mile tempo is good...forced myself to just keep going and stay firm...by mile 5 was ready to celebrate a descent run, but just kept pushing...finally, as I start mile 6, my mental state began to strengthen.  Finished 6.25 miles in 42:32 (6:48 pace).  Jogged just under 4 miles back home.  12 miles total.

Today was a victory for me in staying focussed on the "big picture".  Next Monday I have a 20k and this gives me confidence to pace it just under 7 min/miles.  Hopefully I'll continue to progress as the marathon gets closer.

Ran 2 miles to the track...decided to run 2 miles at around the pace I hope to do next Monday's 20k...in my mind I feel ready to keep a 6:45-55 pace.  I ran the first mile without checking my watch...was surprised to see a 6:27 time at the end of the 4th lap...without stopping continued on for a 2nd mile...this time I wanted to keep a controlled 6:45 pace again without checking my watch...upon finishing 4th lap looked to see a 6:35 time.  If I feel this good on Monday, I may find myself with a pretty good time.  I think I will pace myself at 6:45...we'll see.  Finished off with back route home for a total of 8 miles (+ 30 minutes upper body at gym).

This has been a good month.  I've sustained 70 mile/per/week schedule and have felt an energy level able to do more.  The times are gradually going down.  7 min pace is becoming much easier.  I have a 20k and 1/2 marathon planned for this month + two 20 mile runs.  This would get me up to six 20 milers for training.  I also hope to emphasize 1-mile repeats this upcoming month and will be careful to really observe recovery runs.  I'll be very satisfied to keep under a 7-min pace for the 20k, and hope to improve whatever my pace ends up being by 5-10 seconds for the 1/2 marathon (end of September).  Overall, I feel as though I am getting close to my BQ goal, but do not want to ease up or take anything for granted.

Mixed feeling about today's race.  First of all, I was happy to finish under a 7 minute pace.  However, I did a poor job in pacing.  Felt great at the start!  First 2 miles kept a 6:30 pace which seemed incredibly easy.  There may have been a mistake on the mile marker for mile three which indicated I took 7 min on mile 3, so I picked up the pace.  Mile four was where I became overly aggressive and paid for it...did a 6 minute mile (what was I thinking?).  Kept the pace at 6:50 for miles 5 and 6, then somewhere around mile 7 or 8 hit a slight hill.  This almost ruined me (ran one of the miles at 7:30...it's all blending now).  At mile 9 a friend passed me which helped tremendously in my return to just a couple seconds over a 7 minute pace.  Mile 10 my training partner, Ed, gave me a big swat on the butt and stuck with me for a mile before taking off.  Mile 11 began a slight decline and I was able to return to just under a 7 minute pace for the final stretch.

My overall time was 1:26:12 for the 20k (6:56 pace)...with a smarter pacing strategy I may have had closer to a 6:45-50 pace in me.  Again, I'm happy with the result and have learned from the experience.

The winner ran the course in 59:11.  There were just over 2,000 runners in the event with several elites.  It was an enjoyable day!

Overall mileage was 14 (warm-ups included).

Good job on the sub - 7 effort. Most races are about learning how to race better, so it sounds like you've done a couple of good things today. Your weight is just falling off - that's what happens with good training. Sounds like you've reached one of your long term goals too.

From Robert on Tue, Sep 02, 2008 at 10:05:58

Good job. Keep this race in perspective. Don't expect PRs while you are running near your historical max miles/wk, not tapering, and losing weight (yes, I said losing weight). I blew up up on a half about 2 mo. before G-ma's this year. I beat myself up about it until I realized I ran 11 x 400 hard hill repeats 3 days before the half. Stay focused on the bigger goal while not losing touch with where you came from is the key (i.e. patience).

Note to self:  feel the need to report the minor aches/pains that has accompanied my progress for future reference.  Early June worked my way cautiously through minor shin splints (ran slow vs. stop running).  After a week of soreness they've been fine.  Early July began to feel almost a "locked up" type sensation in my right knee...not very painful, but just stiff.  Probably from my increased mileage.  Again, was able to run through it and have felt nothing since.  Two weeks ago my right foot, just under my small three toes began to really hurt.  It was more of a bruise type feeling which I think occured while breaking in new shoes on a 10-mile run through the hills.  It never hurt that badly during my runs, but definitely caused me to limp a bit during the rest of the day.  The pain is about 95% gone.  I'm still feeling very healthy with an enormous amount of energy.

Yes, I hear you regarding the pains. Sometimes feels like the body alternates from place to place for pain once something heals. I have the same problems you have. One stiff knee and a compartment pain in a foot. I've been self massaging and stretching more, which has helped. My foot still barks sometimes when I run over 15 miles. I have a fallen arch on the foot, but I wear orthotics. That foot has always been testy though. Don't be afraid to hit the treadmill (if you have access to one) once and a while. I consider it friend not foe! Keep up the great work.

Well...strange run for me today.  Just came off of a 20-miler yesterday which was a beast and along with the humidity completely wiped me out.  Today I thought I'd just do a nice 10 mile run at a recovery pace.  As I started out, I felt really good (no humidity, perfect temperature).  My first mile came in right about 8 minutes, so I thought I might just step it up to marathon goal pace for a couple of miles as long as I felt so good.  Well, the couple of miles stretched into 12...felt absolutely great!  No rhyme, no reason.  Came in at 1:29:33 for a 7:28 pace over 12 miles.  Great start to the week...will definitely do recovery pace tomorrow.

Hope to step up the miles this week...maybe 80?

Our 10-year-old kept getting up last night and kept me from getting much sleep.  Felt as though I should save intensity for tomorrow.  Still got out for 10, kept an 8:45 pace for the first 9 and then ran mile 10 in 6:30.  Hopefully I can get better rest this evening.

Well, got up early.  Ran two miles to the track at about 9 min pace.  Planned on running 2 sets of three miles, but was short on time...instead ran 3x1 , walked a lap and then ran 2x1...

mile 1- 6:50

mile 2- 6:05

mile 3- 6:28

(walked lap)

mile 4- 6:45 (planned on running 3 at this pace, but noticed it was getting late)

mile 5- 6:11 (picked up pace to make up for lost mile)

Ran 2 miles home at 8:15 pace

Total for morning = 9 miles

Still figuring out my capabilities/limitations...next week I plan to run a much more even approach to mile repeats.

Ran three light miles over lunch.  Felt a little stiff from the lighttrainers this morning, so realize I may need to work them into my schedule maybe once or twice a week (they'll be my marathon shoes)

Great workout! These are some nice splits on the mile repeats. Good job nailing the last one. I know what you mean by trying to run more even splits. I do that a lot on my tempos runs. I am all over the place pace wise. Running on the track is a great way to practice even splits since you can get feedback every 1/4 mile. I am thinking of doing a 6 mile tempo on the track next week just to get a measure of where I am at training wise going into the marathon. Nice workout and great week so far!

Wow, awesome run with great splits like Jim indicted (especially for early in the morning!). You are running well and your consistent and increasing mileage is really paying off in your performance!

From Robert on Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 10:05:21

Excellent work! Yes, mile repeats can be tough doggies for pacing. I usually start around 10K pace and TRY to work down from there. You're doing great.

Thanks guys! I'm in need of the encouragement. It's been a difficult week to get sleep, so I almost bagged this morning. Should be able to rest well the next two nights.

You make me think I am not running enough miles, you are a machine! Great workout today.

I have had 4 key runs in a row so tomorrow is rest. Saturday is 21 miles, 11 miles @ 7:25 avg then 10 miles 6:40 avg.

I really like these long progressive runs they give me confidence for negative splitting a race. The plan is to run 7:15's for the first 14 miles or less and then go for it around 6:45's for as long as I can.

Keep it going!!

Ran 5 miles with my wife...incorporated a local 5k run.  She ran the course in 27:30 which includes a good size hill and chopped 5 1/2 minutes off her early summer run on the same course.  She will be running a half-marathon the last weekend of this month and has been running 5 days a week.  Can't get her to do the blog, but am proud of her hard work.

Did another 9 miles on my own...felt really good, but wanted to save a big day for Sunday afternoon.  Ran the final mile (mile 14) in 6:06.

Planning to do a 20-miler tomorrow.  Wanted to get a good enough workout in today, so as to just feel it a bit tomorrow.  Maybe I'll regret it later, but I want to have to learn to push it more when tired.

Ran just over two miles to the track and ran 5-miles, wanting to run firm without really pushing it too much.

Mile 1- 6:56 (felt very easy)

jogged one lap

Mile 2- 6:38 (again, felt easy...seemed like a pace I could hold for 1/2 marathon)

Mile 3- 8:00 (just wanted to make sure not to over exert today)

Mile 4- 6:13 (ran hard, but comfortably hard- never really pushed it)

jogged one lap

Mile 5- 6:47 (just aiming to keep it under seven...really more of a 7 minute pace until the last half lap)

Jogged just over 2 miles back home- 10 miles total

Also, did upper body at the gym and was surprised that my weight lifting is actually beginning to creep back up.  Maybe my body's beginning to adjust to the additional mileage.  Benched 225- 3x5 (plus squeezed a 6th out at the end)

Mixed feelings on today's run.  It was 78 degrees with 75 % humidity.  New it might affect us, but wasn't sure how much.  By mile 3 my feet were absolutely soaked.  Then mile 12 we tackled "Gallow's Lane" (listed this month by runner's world as the #8 most challenging hill in the U.S.)  Not sure if my legs really ever recovered from Gallows.  Overall, Ed and I ran the first loop (12.5 miles) in 1:29:11 (7:08 pace).  Felt good about our effort, but knew I was in trouble for the second stretch.  We loaded up with gatorade for our standard 8-mile loop which we typical run at about a 7:30 pace.  Well, about 4 miles in, I crashed and burned.  I sent him ahead and continued to run at a slower pace, salvaging a time of 1:07:22 (8:25 pace...more like 9:15 for the last 4 miles).

I'm not sure if it was the heat, our ambitious first loop, or my high mileage week which caused me to crash...probably a combination of all three.  Next week we plan to do the first loop slowly and marathon pace at the end to rebuild our confidence.  Anyway, it was a good day for mileage.  Also, used my light trainers to see how I could handle greater mileage.  Think I'll be fine with them.

In my book any time you run 20 miles it is a good run. After my run on Saturday I know the humidity can take a lot out of you. That first 12 miles was awesome (especially with the big hill) and you hung in there to finish the run. I think you have a good plan for next week. You are definitely running strong and I wouldn't let one day shake your confidence. You will be ready for your marathon.

From jtshad on Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 22:07:49

Good job getting the mileage in, this is a great learning run...learning how to deal with the heat, hydrate, pace correctly, stay mentally strong, etc. Nothing wrong with a run like this as long as you look at it for what it is...training!

Keep it up, you are doing awesome.

From rockness18 on Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 14:35:51

Thanks for the encouragement guys and helping me to keep it all in perspective. I've been battling things mentally over the past week or two. Patience is one of my weaker areas, so as the marathon date starts getting closer, I'm just itching to get through the training process. Glad to have gotten this run under my belt.

From Bob on Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 14:40:04

You're doing just fine. 20 miles is 20 miles. We can't control the weather. Besides, think of how prepared your hammies will now be after slogging around heavy wet shoes!! Call it our form of "water running".

From JimF on Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 15:54:48

I know what you mean about battling patience and expectations. One day I think things are going great and I will run close to 3:00 the next day I wonder if I can break 3:30. It will be good to get to the line and see what happens. Even though it is hard to do I have been trying to listen to others on the blog and just trust the training. You have had good training so that won't let you down on race day.

Good luck in the half, try and negative split this race it will give you a ton of confidence. I could try and hold 6:52's as long as possible but I would rather run a bit easier the first 12 miles and then take off and who knows maybe I will hold it for a 3 hour marathon. This is what makes it fun and interesting.

From rockness18 on Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 22:45:42

"Smally", I'll let you know. I'm such the novice and get totally confused by the hot, humid days that make a marathon seem impossible and then the cool, crisp ones that lead me to believe I could run close to 3 hrs. I'm shooting for a negative split in the half and will allow that to influence my marathon strategy...Jim, thanks for the consistent encouragement...it has made a big difference in my training as well.

From smally on Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 09:21:17

It was so nice to run with no watch today, 14 degrees and sunny, heaven on earth.

My game plan after thinking about it is a negative split, 134/130. I know I can run sub 3 but I just don't want to hit the wall and be passed, that really hurts. Therefore my plan is to pb have a great race and then train for a sub 3 Boston.

This is so fun. I also my best buddy trying to qualify, he ran 319 when I qualified so this race is really important for him so I want to run at least the first half with him.

CT is so nice in the fall.

Nice easy  mile ran at 9 min. pace.  Have decided to stop weight training for my legs until after the marathon.  Will slowly taper on upper body as well.  Still plan on a big week and then gradually tapering for the October marathon.  Plan on a bigger run early this evening...

Ran with Ed 2 miles down to the track.  Did progressive runs on the track 2 sets of 5 miles.  Here are the splits:

Mile 1- 7:43

Mile 2- 7:38

Mile 3- 7:10

Mile 4- 6:52

Mile 5- 6:28

Jogged 2 laps, then started 2nd set

Mile 1- 7:28

Mile 2- 7:10

Mile 3- 7:04

Mile 4- 6:43

Mile 5- 6:23

Total on track = 10 miles in 1:10:38 (7:04 pace)

Had a lot of energy left at the end...felt as though I could have run an extra mile and break 6 minutes.  Taught me alot about strategy for running.  I'm easily faster than Ed, yet he beat me in the 20k a few weeks ago with a negative split.  Told me if I would have just kept with him, I could have easily improved my time and left him at the end.  Helpful to have an experienced runner work with me.

Jogged another lap + 2 1/4 home.  15 miles total for the evening.  Plan to run lightly tomorrow and Friday, followed by my last long run before tapering.

I dropped doing any leg work to once a week and that doesn't include any extra weights (body weight mostly). I use to do more for injury prevention sake, but not sure if it really did much for that or not. I carry plenty of muscle bulk because of my lifting history anyway. What marathon are you running?

From rockness18 on Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 15:25:34

Yeah, I've spent the past 3 months doing 2 days a week...one day of squats 3 x 10 at close to body weight + one day of nautilus type lifting. I'm not sure a month off from the weights will do much, but just want to allow my legs to be fresh. I'll be running the "Bay State Marathon" in Lowell, MA. It's a flat course and should be a good time of year.

Well, it was a full week mileage wise and we wanted to get one more 20 miler in before gradually tapering for the marathon.  We took a very hilly route and kept a steady, conversational pace throughout.  Weren't setting any speed records, but felt good about our distance and both had a lot in the tank at the finish.  Could have easily run another four and felt confident about our potential.

Next Saturday I will run a half-marathon which will hopefully help in determining my marathon pace.  It is now 4 weeks away from the race and I plan to focus on tapering, healthy diet/sleep, and getting a comfortable feel with marathon pace range (7:10-7:25ish).

Felt really good today after a big day of running yesterday.  Yesterday's pace made it feel almost like a recovery run...upon finishing 22 felt like I could go another ten.  I was hesitant to pick up the pace...Ed had very little sleep the night before and seemed to be struggling a tiny bit with the hills.  Having slowed him up the previous 2 weekends due to my inability to deal with heat, I owed him the respect of sticking with his pace.

Anyway, all that to say there was a lot of energy in the tank today.  Ran 2 miles down to the track (8:30ish pace).  Ran 3 mile repeats- 6:33, 6:10, 5:58.  Ran 1 mile with my 9 and 10 year old (8:40 pace).  Ran 2 miles with my wife (9:50, 9:04).  Ran 2 miles home in 13 minutes (6:45 pace).  The final two were almost 100% uphill...fairly gradual, until a quick, steep incline at the end.  Felt great at the finish!

The increase in mileage over the past couple of months have made speed work quiet challenging.  You never quite feel like you're 100%.  However, over the past week or two I have felt as though I'm starting to get a grasp on the mileage.  I hope to make the most of my miles as I begin to taper and focus more on marathon/tempo paces.

So nice to have your family run with you in stages, everyone seems so supportive of your running. I love playing hockey with my 6 year old Julian and now he is starting to run a km every 3 days on the TM.

Your so ready for this half marathon and of course the marathon. I think you should run 7 min miles for the first half and then take off for the last half and average 6:30-45, you will pass a ton of runners and give yourself a lot of confidence for the 19th.

Set out to do a 10k on the track.  Probably should have waited a day, but may not have a chance to run long tomorrow + want need time to be ready for 1/2 marathon on Saturday.  Warmed up for two miles...mile 1- 8:08, mile 2- 7:04...start the 10k...the wind was just wicked up on our track today and by mile 3 I made a slight adjustment in my head to break the run up into tempo runs...just didn't have it in me to fight that wind every 1/2 lap...

First tempo was 3 1/2 miles in 22:32 (6:26 pace)

Jogged two laps

Second tempo was 3 miles in 20:38 (6:53 pace)

Walked another lap to cool down.

9 miles total...Probably should have been more even split...was definitely feeling tight from Sat/Sun.  Plan on pacing the 1/2 marathon on Saturday at 6:40-45 and see how it goes.  My goal is to have a much more even split this time.

Ran 4 miles as a warm-up and to contribute to my final 70-mile week.  This morning was in the mid-60's and wet, a mixture of light ran and 100% humidity.  Due to just a tad bit of soreness in my legs, I decided to run a conservative, yet firm race.  The event advertises itself as a "fast race" with an overall decline of 100ft.  However, I found it to be a much more challenging course than the 20k I ran earlier this month.

I did not use a watch to time and although the course had mile markers, the times were only posted at mile 1, 5, 9, and 12.  Thus, I was pretty much forced to run by 100% feel.

Mile 1 split- 6:15 (very steep decline...was honestly trying to keep a 6:45 pace)

Miles 2-5 were all through rolling hills, yet definitely leaned more downhill.  I just wanted to keep things around a 6:45 pace...again, forced to go by 100% feel.

Mile 5 split- 32:46 (take away mile 1, perhaps still a little too fast)

Miles 6-9 felt very comfortable.  I made a decision in my mind to keep a conservative pace in and keep myself in position to possibly break 1:30 which seemed very do-able.

Mile 9 split- 1:00:48 (felt very positive about this split...still feeling comfortable)

Miles 9-12 were still moving through rolling hills.  The slight lean downhill was beginnning to shift to a slight lean uphill.  My energy level still felt strong and my hope was to remain in position to break 1:30.  Mile 11 was mostly uphill, yet in my mind this was a positive thing (whatever goes up must eventually come back down)

Mile 12 split- 1:22:30 (legs a bit stiff, yet energy level still strong)

Quickly began crunching numbers in my head.  Felt confident that a 1:30 was still within reach.  Mile 12 began a slight decline which gave me confidence to turn it up a notch.  However, half way into mile 12 came a very steep hill...uh-oh!  It looked to be about a quarter mile, so I still felt there was a chance...but as it leveled out it was followed by another steep hill...dang!  Just put my head down and kept going strong.

At this stage I realized the 1:30 wasn't going to happen, but still wanted to finish with an overall 7 min pace.  Things eventually flattened out and I still had the energy to sprint the final 1/4 mile or so.

Mile 13.1 finish- 1:31:32 (still felt strong)

Overall, I felt good about the race.  In hindsight, I definitely had it in me to break 1:30.  A few things may have helped- a watch, or timed mile-markers, a quicker pace in miles 9-12 (it was hard to gage on my own), and a better sense of the course (I honestly thought I was in position for a strong finish...just didn't know much about that final hill).  Also, felt good about finishing a full minute in front of a local runner who has been neck-to-neck with me in the past 3 or 4 races (beating me twice and me beating him by a few seconds once).  Ended up in 11th place, 2nd in my age group.  Also, my wife completed this race with a pace just over 10 minutes...huge accomplishment after having 6 children!

From JimF on Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 15:49:46

Great job on the race! I think 1:30 would definitely be in the bag with some better weather, less hilly course and less than a 70 mile week. Considering all of those factors I think it is an excellent result and positions you well for your marathon. As Sasha points out you have made some incredible progress this year. Congratulations!!

From haynes on Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 17:38:25

Good race. Did you notice how we went with the running water for the first half then crossed the bridge and went against the running water for the second? I knew it was a down and up course because of that. I don't actually trust my garmin for altitude change because it will highly overestimate it. Yeah, you should be under 1:30 on another course later in the year (ie. colder). It may not have seemed warm ever but times suffer from 60 up and that is exacerbated by the humidity.

From Dale on Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 19:34:46

A good solid effort, especially given the conditions and the course. It's always good to finish a race strong like that, and not always the easiest thing to do. Good job!

Thanks for all the encouraging responses! Sasha, I credit much of my improvement to this blog...it makes a world of difference. My goal is to get a BQ and with this run under my belt, it seems within reach. You folks have dones wonders for my workout plans through my ability to see your workouts and observe your advice to one another...and yes, if there was a way to run around hills, I would definitely commit myself to mastering the technique.

Dave,

First off tell your wife congratulations, we all know who is most important.

I admire you racing without the watch, I really tried to do my best running by feel for my last 10 miles today, I felt so free.

Lets be smart these last 3 weeks and most importantly realize just how blessed we are.

Great race today.

I'm sure if you run the race next year and keep training you'll break at least 1:29! That last mile was devastating! especially when it started on a downhill...congrats on improving so much so fast! what marathon are you going to try to qualify for Boston? Haynes and I are doing the Hudson Mohawk in 2 weeks. Supposed to be one of the top 10 fastest marathons in the US. We decided Cape cod was too hilly for us (or at least me) to break 3 hrs.

From rockness18 on Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 22:44:04

bedoukian,

I'm looking to run the "Bay State" marthon in Lowell, MA, also considered a "fast course". Hopefully, "fast" for them is relatively closer to my definition of fast than Hogsback's. Good luck in the Mohawk...hope you break 3 hrs!

From haynes on Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 22:59:30

Lowell is supposed to be quite fast. And I have heard that not only from the website, but from people who have run it. Good luck.

Absolutely nailed a work-out today!  This is my last "big one" before tapering.  Went to the track and the goal was to keep MP for 5x4x3x2x1 mile with 2 min breaks between sets.  Based on my recent 1/2 marathon chose 7:10 as marathon pace.  Here are the results...

Set 1- 7:08,7:07, 7:02,7:01,7:02

2 minute rest

Set 2- 7:00,7:00,7:01,6:59

2 minute rest

Set 3- 6:55,6:54,6:52

2 minute rest

Set 4- 6:49,6:47

2 minute rest

Final mile- 6:25

Work-out included 2 warm-up laps and 2 cool down laps.  My intention was not to get progressively fast, yet that's what my body wanted to do.  Learned alot about patience and my potential to achieve a negative split.  This was a good confidence booster leading up to marathon day.

I don't mean to sound dumb, but what does "triumphs 2" mean? Is it a total monthly mileage? You've lost 23 lbs. since May? And your 5k time dropped over 2 minutes in 2 months? That's awesome!

From JimF on Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 14:45:05

Awesome! You should get a lot of confidence from this workout. You are running some impressive times and should lead to a huge PR for the marathon plus an easy BQ. As you go into the taper you will only get stronger so everything is looking real good.

From rockness18 on Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 18:01:16

Jason,

The triumphs 2 are the brand of Saucony's I wear. I have 2 different pairs and keep track of the mileage on each. Thanks for the compliment...much of the dramatic improvement is due to me not having run for several years...I am working hard, but don't plan on the exponential improvements to continue indefinitely.

Jim, thanks! I am definitely beginning to feel stronger. Perhaps finally getting used to the increased mileage. Can't wait for an easier week or two.

Felt a little sluggish today at first, probably a combination of Tuesday's run, last night's baseball game, and last weekend's half-marathon.  Still wanted to do a good, steady run.  Decided to go out on the 8-mile route, a bit hilly, yet gorgeous place to run.  My best pace on that route has been just under an hour (7:15-20ish/per mile).  Put on a stop watch and decided to just go by feel (not check until I finish).  Within a mile it started to rain fairly hard, yet it felt kind of refreshing (more cool than the humid feel I've been used to).  The pace seemed to gradually pick up on it's own.  Was able to semi-sprint the last 1/3 of a mile or so and came in at 55:56...very surprising!  Didn't really have to overly push it and broke my best time by at least a couple minutes.  Looking forward a progressive taper and really starting to get a feel for my stride.

Ran 5 miles on the treadmill + 45 minutes on weights.  Kept 9 min pace for 3 miles and 8 min pace for the last two.

Tomorrow will be my last "long" run...16 miles. Here are my breakdowns since May 4th's marathon:

50 mile weeks- 5 (six if you add in tomorrow)

60 mile weeks- 2

70 mile weeks- 9

90 mile week- 1

20 milers- 7

Total weeks over 50 miles= 17 (18 after tomorrow)

I never cracked 60 miles in preparation for the May marathon.  Also, I only completed 1 20-miler (failed at a second attempt).  Obviously, I'm far better prepared this go round.

Well, today I've determined my marathon pace goal.  Ran 16 miles, 14 of them @mp.  Eased into the run with the first two miles in 7:30 and 7:20.  Went through sloping hills for the first 10 miles in 1:12:12 total...took a gu in mile 10 (first time ever trying...actually liked it) and transitioned onto the high school track (only stopping 10 seconds for water).  Did 4 miles on the track in 28:25 for a total of 14 miles in 1:40:37 (7:11 pace).  Felt as though the last four miles could give me a sense of what I can do for an entire marathon, factoring in 2 weeks of taper time.  Thus, in my mind a 7:10 pace seems do-able, in fact, I felt the ability to have been able to hold it today for several more miles.  Finished the run with a light "cool-down" jog for 2 miles.

Upon returning home, my oldest daughter asked "what the heck happened to you?"  I had no idea what she was talking about.  She continued, "why are you bleeding?"  I looked down to discover that I had literally run my nipples off.  Whoa...that certainly was a first!

This is the first week in well over a month in which I've had 3 solid recovery days strung together in a row.  Felt very good.  Did a warm-up run to the track (8:45, 7:30).  Planned on running 4-5 mile repeats at 5k-10k pace.  First three were much quicker then I had planned...6:18, 6:00, 5:53...I definitely had another strong mile left in me, yet reminded myself that I am in the midst of a taper.  Jogged 2 miles back home for 7 miles total.  For the first time in months,  I decided to leave that final mile within me.  My hopes are to be very careful with diet over the next 9-10 days and have one "short, brisk run" early next week at mp, along with a few short bursts within slow runs.

Thanks! To things are helpful...1) The taper feels wonderful! 2) It was cold this morning...I've done 75% of my training in humidity (Having lived in Chicago for 5 year, I trust Indiana has similiar summer patterns).

Looks like your weekend might be a little warm, yet probably better conditions than much of your training weather has been. Hope you can get the proper rest this week...many of the veterans on the blog seem to think you're more than ready. Good luck!

From wheakory on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 18:27:06

Great run. It's best to leave that one mile out that you wanted to run, because your training is over and it's time to rest with just some intensity.

You have a great strategy for going into the marathon. It's important to get that last MP run in early on in the week of the marathon. It's a real confidence builder.

Yes, we all need prespective because running can become self consuming. You've already done all the work necessary to have a stellar race. I would just run 5-6 miles per day with one workout including 2 miles at PMP. I usually take the 1-2 days before a race completely off, but some still run

about 2-3 mi. You know what to do. Just keep it low key, hydrate, and stay off your feet the day(s) before the race. You are going to blow your PR away.

Felt really good today.  I was tight to begin with, not sore tight, but the kind of tight which takes longer to get warmed up.  Ran 6 miles at the track (only place flat), 2 at mp...

mile 2- 7:32

mile 3- 7:06

mile 4- 7:06

mile 6- 8:15

I want to be careful this weekend.  7:06 felt very, very easy.  However, my 1/2 marathon time a couple weeks ago was barely under 7 minutes (hilly course, humid day- but nonetheless).  My desire this weekend is to ease into the pace (7:05-7:10) and resist the urge to go faster until I get to the 18-20 mile stage.  If the weather's good (forecast is 55 high) and I'm feeling good that day, then I'll see what I have at the end.  If not, I should still be in good position to challenge a BQ time.  My goal is 3:12, I'd be thrilled with anything under 3:10...and as much as I'd like to say I'd be satisfied with anything under 3:25, deep down I won't be...I really want that BQ time.  I'm in position, so I'll just need to be patient and wise.

Tonight will be my last evening of sit-ups/push-ups/crunches (been doing them every other night since May 4th) while I watch baseball.  No more weights at the gym either...except for stretching.  Slept 9 hours last night and hope to average at least 8 each night this week (recognizing the night before will be a struggle).  Currently have no nagging injuries...nothing- calves, shins, feet, toes, hamstrings- everything feels 100% healthy...couldn't say that throughout most of the training.  Literally ran through several little nagging aches and pains.  Even have all my toenails in tack (one's still black, but not in pain...not from running, but from kicking a chair in the middle of the night).  Feeling good about things!

I hope you don't mind me handing out advice. I'm no expert and I'm only forwarding what I've read in several books. One trap I tend to fall into before a race is thinking of reasons for having a bad race day. Whether it be the weather forecast, weight gain, lack of sleep, etc. Try to stay as positive as possible. It can be hard to do while in a taper though. Besides, consider your progress, you're going to "knock the cover off the ball"!

Great day for a race.  Everything came together.  Weather started in the 40's and a bit overcast.  The winds were definitely strong, yet not a factor until the last 5 miles.  Here's the splits as best as I can remember:

Mile 2: 13:50 (somehow missed the 1st mile marker...fully stopped to take a drink and decided to sacrifice 3-5 seconds every 2 miles to do this...I believe it paid off in the long run)

Mile 3: 20:55 (felt great, but decided to slow down a tad)

Mile 5: 35:20 (somehow missed 4 mile marker...someone said a spectator took it)

10k:  44 minutes (somehow missed mile 6)

Mile 7:  49:35

Miles 8-12:  kept steady pace...nothing too interesting...stilling feeling great

* Halfway point:  1:33 on the nose (felt really good, but decided to treat the next 2-3 miles very cautiously...mini-mini-Heartbreak)

Mile 14:  1:40:10

Mile 15:  1:47:20

Mile 16:  1:54:35

Mile 17:  2:01:50

Mile 18:  2:09:15

Mile 19:  2:16:40

Mile 20:  2:23:00 (at this point, knew I was going to get the BQ)

Mile 21: 2:30:00 (now we began to hit a very aggressive headwind, my system felt great, but my legs really began to have to work)

Mile 22: 2:38:00 (I actually stopped for about 20 seconds to not only take a gu, but drink 2 cups of water...think it really paid off)

Mile 23-26:  stopped paying attention to the time...just focussed on keeping each mile around 7:30...do remember doing mile 26 in 7 minutes

Finishing time:  3:10:30 (was able to sprint at the end and passed about 10-12 folks on the track, including the 3:10 pacers)

My family was all at the finish, cheering wholeheartedly.  Although my legs were a bit sore, my energy level was sky high and I felt like I could run another five miles.  Many folks seemed to be struggle with the headwind, during the final 5 miles and I probably passed 30-40 runners.  The only folks who passed me were the 3:10 pacing group, but I passed them at the end (sorry if it sounds like bragging...but it did feel good).  It was all so exhilerating.

A few huge thank you's:  first and foremost to God for good health and my family for 100% support...secondly, Ed who joined me, trained with me and at age 52 today ran a 3:17...thirdly, to Sasha for setting up this blog- the access to elite training regiments made an incredibly huge difference...and lastly, to so many folks on this blog who gave such consistent encouragement- noteworthy- Jeff, Jim, Todd, and Robert.  I finished the day with a meal at Cheesecake Factory, including a chocolate, peanut butter, cookie dough slice of heaven to go.  Plan to go hit the hotel's swimming pool with family right now, and return to eat dessert just in time for the Red Sox game 7 (my wife was shocked to see me turn it off last night at 10:15 w/a 2-2 score).  This week I planned to register for the Boston Marathon.  No running this week...but I'll be back at it dedicating the next month to getting faster.

Congrats on a great race and the BQ! Your training really paid off and you ran a spectacular race (God was definitely with you on this one!). Nice consistent running. Miles 23-26.2 are gut check and you did exactly what you needed to do...focus on a mile at a time. I am sure it help knowing that you were way under the BQ time (inspiration or just confidence that you got it in the bag!).

Still a little bit sore from the race...but a "good" sore.  Went to the gym and did 20 minutes bike, 30 minutes weights, and 4 miles on the treadmill (9 minute pace).  Will be careful this week, but feel ready to ease back into mileage again.  After a week or two of "recovery running" (nothing much under mp), I will entirely focus my running on getting faster.  Did very little sprinting over the past 5 months (knew that endurance was my weakness).  Hopefully speed will come more naturally...I was much more of a sprinter in high school- never ran a mile under 6 minutes, but was always the fastest white kid on the team.  Will be interesting how much of it I can gain back (do remember running a lap around the track in college in 55 seconds...I be happy to get it close to an 60)...I'm getting old though...we'll see.

Glad to hear that you came out of the marathon in pretty good shape. You definitely deserve some downtime and will do the body good. You bring up some interesting points about speed. I ran the 400/800/mile in track in HS but I haven't tried to run all out at any of these distances since I started running again. I am probably afraid to see how slow the time would be!

From rockness18 on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 19:35:26

yeah, I gave an all-out on the mile at one point in my training which made me feel good. Then gave a "close-to-all-out" in the 200 which made me feel not so good. Oh to be young again! Glad to see you keep perspective and continue on in your quest for a BQ...you undoubtedly have it in you.

Cool, crisp day.  I've been running quite conservatively for a month now, including the marathon.  Not much speed, rather keeping fast days close to that 7:05/7:10 pace.  Today decided to cut loose just a little bit.  Nothing real fast, but still stretch it just a bit.  Ran 9 miles in 1:00:35 (6:43 pace)- mile 9 was the flattest stretch timed at 6:33.  Did a cool down for mile 10.  Legs felt great...plan to begin speed work either this weekend or early next week.  Start with 100 meter sprints week #1 and gradually work my way up to a 5k (100, 200, 400, 800, 1mile, 2mile, 5k).  This will take up my next 7 weeks- 2x per week.  Hope by the end of this stretch to have improved my 19:09 5k pr...we'll see.  If so, would love to break 18 minutes by next Spring.

Did weight work-out at the gym...legs for the first time in over a month.  I'll feel it tomorrow.  Next taper, I'll wait 10-days or so before race to cut out the leg work.  I was cautious this time, but think I will benefit from the extra strength work next go round for the Boston hills.  One hour of weights + 4 miles on the treadmill.  Kept a 9 min pace, but worked my way up with incline.  Plan on plenty of hill-work-outs over the next 4-5 months.  All road races chosen will be the most challenging (w/hills).  Plan on a 10-12 miler tomorrow.

Do you have a set workout for legs (i.e 3 sets of squats, etc.)?

From RivertonPaul on Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 12:28:01

Good idea to work in some incline. I need to work on holding pace uphill myself. Do the the treadmills at your gym also have a decline feature? If they do, you can get some excellent downhill training in as well.

From rockness18 on Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 14:10:54

Jon,

I do the basic nautilus equiptment- 3 sets of 10-12, free weight squats (deep)- 3x10 (be careful, not a good idea if the technique is wrong), calf raises, and a little bit of bicycle. My routine is 2x per week- one day a little more intense than the other. Also, I've found if time's an issue, just do 1 or 2 sets for a total work-out of 15-20 minutes.

Paul, I wish our treadmills had the decline feature, but they don't. Fortunately I live in a very hilly area, yet winter is approaching rapidly.

That is a strong 5k even for the treadmill. Do you have a target 5k coming up?

From rockness18 on Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 09:52:26

Jim,

I don't...in fact, I am hoping to get a couple months of training in before I do. Was surprised to run such a fast time. Personally, I don't think I'm that fast yet...it's easier for me to keep my legs pumping on a treadmill that won't slow down than to do so on solid ground. I plan on running a 10k on Thanksgiving, but am keeping my expectations very low. The course is a slow one with steep hills. I've run the course once and it kicked my butt.

From JimF on Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 13:45:27

17.52 no matter where it is sounds good to me. I am amazed at how fast your times have come down at the 5k. I think you should be in great shape to run a good a solid 10k. Is this your first shot at a 10k in a while? I had hoped to be doing some 5k/10ks but now that I am running another marathon I will have to wait to spring to focus on a solid shorter race.

From rockness18 on Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 15:49:06

Jim,

I've only run a 10k once in my life- last Thanksgiving. It was the same one I'll be running this year and I did it in 54 minutes. It seemed extremely challenging then, but I hadn't been running much.

From JimF on Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 14:43:52

I think it will be much different this time around. I would think sub 40 and how much under will depend on course/weather. You will have plenty of time to have recovered from the marathon before the race and also add in some speed work. If the weather cooperates I will probably try to run a 10k before the marathon just as a speed workout. It seems like you came out of the marathon in great shape so that should help you in the build up to Boston.

Ran 10 miles today...had interesting experience.  It was freezing cold outside, yet for the 2nd day in a row my right foot was literally burning.  I had to stop a couple of times, take off my shoe (in 30 degree weather), and place my foot on the cold cement to take away the burning sensation.  I'm going to post this to get some sort of insight on what it might be.  I found a few things on the internet about foot striking, break down of red blood cells, and iron depletion- all associated with high mileage runners- especially on the heavier side.

I have never heard of the foot issue that you are experiencing but hopefully you can get it figured out soon and taken care of. I assume that like other running issues just rest and ice may help.

I'm thinking it might have something to do with my shoes. They were light weight trainers, not all that worn (less than 200 miles), yet pretty thrashed. I wore a different pair this morning and felt fine (a bit tender, but much more protected). I'm definitely going to be cautious and do some icing over the next few days.

Felt very sluggish this morning, yet still wanted to make it a "speed" day.  Jogged 3 miles to at an attempt to get loose and then told myself just to kick it in gear, like it or not.  Ran a 3 mile tempo (5:52, 6:40/hill, 6:07).  Jogged 2 more miles to the track and then did 12 x 100meters with 200meter jogs in between- kept each sprint right about 15 seconds, give or take a little on each one.  Foot never got "hot" today. Threw away my 903's with- pretty much shot with modest amount of mileage.

Great job on the bench press. About 4 years ago I could get up 225 3-5 times. Now, I am straining with the weight I used to warmup with! But, my mileage and pace make up for the lack of upperbody strength, I guess. Only so much time to work out, and weights (and tennis) are the casualties for me.

From rockness18 on Thu, Nov 06, 2008 at 17:21:38

Jeff,

Yeah, I'm just clinging on to some of my strength at this point. However, to reach the next level, I may need to sacrifice some muscle mass. A year ago I could bench 275 x 5, but weighed 205 and could run my present mp for only 2-3 miles.

From Robert on Thu, Nov 06, 2008 at 18:01:43

I don't even want to get near a bench!!! Too scary to even think about it. However, I'd like to see how much I lost in squats and deads. I use to rep out 440 in those movements. I could pick up the rear end of a car, but I felt like my rear end was the size of a car!!!

From rockness18 on Thu, Nov 06, 2008 at 19:38:02

So Robert, I saw you lost 60lbs. What was your top weight and strength?

From Robert on Fri, Nov 07, 2008 at 09:55:05

According to my training log, I weighed between 240-245 back in 2000. At that point I was doing 440 deadlifts, 430 squats, 720 leg press, 250 bench, 520 calf raise, 175 shoulder press, and 45 weighed dips all for 2-3 sets x 6-10 reps. I did a variety of other stuff (cleans, farmer walks, etc.) sticking to multi chain movements (no bicep curls, tricep press, leg extensions, etc.). During 2001 I started to run 3 times a week with heavy lifting on opposite days. My desire for endurance training gradually took over. However, I now have a thick torso, core, and legs from years of lifting, which I can't seem to shed. I'd like to lose another 10-15 and get down to 165, but can't seem to get there without being a complete jerk around the house. Not worth it right now. Sorry for the long post.

From rockness18 on Fri, Nov 07, 2008 at 11:54:38

You were a beast! I'm impressed you've made such a solid transition into endurance training. At my peak, my squats were only sets of 8-10 @ 315 lbs. I always had somewhat lean mass and could never quite keep up with the "big boys".

From Robert on Fri, Nov 07, 2008 at 12:26:50

Squats at 315 is nothing to snicker at because not many can even do their own bodyweight on the bar. My transition to running took about 4 years (got serious in late 2005). I'm glad the Lord directed me to running. I found that specializing in weightlifting only is a dead end and the end goal (maximum strength) does not pay in terms of health benefits since it means getting bigger and heavier. I found drugs and cheating are rampant as well. A balanced approach of power and endurance is a much healthier option, but as you know you have to specialize at a certain discipline (endurance running) in order to improve. We'll have to talk more about this stuff at Boston.

From rockness18 on Fri, Nov 07, 2008 at 21:04:51

Would love to...I was really into the weightlifting in college and would literally have to sneak into the gym due to my baseball coach's philosophy on lifting. However, I came to the same conclusion as you, just within the past year or so. My "lean" muscle mass was starting to become less defined and it seemed and 5-10 years of gaining a pound or two was adding up. Never dreamed I'd become a runner (still don't quite consider myself one).

From rockness18 on Fri, Nov 07, 2008 at 15:20:47

Thanks...everything I've read about Boston seems to focus on the hills. We live in very hilly terrain, so I plan on taking advantage of it. They're not the funnest workouts, yet hopefully they'll get easier.

From jtshad on Fri, Nov 07, 2008 at 16:45:16

You have been doing some great training. As for Boston, the first 12 or so are downhill, then from about 14 to 21 is is uphill. Nothing too bad, but training both up and down will get you better prepared. Heartbreak Hill is not as bad as everyone indicates but it is the accummulation of the hills for about 5-6 miles that can catch up with you.

From rockness18 on Fri, Nov 07, 2008 at 20:56:11

That's good to know...I took a look at an elevation chart and was intimidated by that uphill stretch. Hopefully hill training will help me get acclamated. My next goal is sub-3...not sure if Boston's the place to do it, yet I'll still give it a shot.

Was a little disappointed today.  Felt great and had the time to do 18-20.  Still had high energy after 10, but when I stopped to get water had trouble restarting again.  My right foot is still aggrevating me a bit.  Nothing like the "hot foot" from last week, but a bit painful nonetheless.  Could have probably gotten another 10 in, but didn't want to risk any damage.  Might take tomorrow off or just run lightly.  Ran first 9 through a segment of hills in 1:05:50 (7:19 pace).  Measured mile 9 (flat stretch) and timed it in 7:10- probably the best gauge of my effort throughout.

Hope the foot gets to feeling better. You probably did the smart thing by not going extra distance. Still a strong week of running.

Thanks Jim...my foot took quite a pounding in the marathon w/my light trainers and I'm still feeling the affects just a bit. The only frustrating part is that my body feels like going and my foot says "be careful". There's a lot of time before my next marathon, so I am being cautious not to do something I'll regret.

Very smart move and way to use your wisdom. It's better to cut the run short than run in pain. This could have lead to a real bad problem if you would have kept running.

Ran 10 miles today.  The first 2 miles @ 9min/pace to the track.  At the track started with a 3-mile tempo (6:39, 6:38, 6:29).  Jogged another mile and then did 16 x 100m sprints on the soccer field (jogged 100m between sprints).  Jogged 2 miles back home.

Legs feel great.  Right foot is still tender.  Plan to do much less on pavement this week- mostly track and treadmill.  Need to get this foot thing back under control.

Nice workout. Do you do your workouts before or after Church.

I usually do mine before Church. Usually I don't run on Sunday, but lately I feel I'm trying to relax my spirit to get out there and run and think about Church, and having a good spiritual attitude going to Church, because lately my Spirit needs to be revive or something.

From rockness18 on Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 09:35:30

I do them after church. It is one of the most powerful times for me during the week. Obviously, Sunday is a big day for me (sermon + family). Our pattern is church, fellowship (coffee hour), and then head out to eat. We take our time and upon returning home, everyone "crashes"- nap time. This used to be the time of day I would watch football. Now I often head out for a run. Much time to pray, reflect, think over the morning, and then even shift my thoughts towards the upcoming week. I don't view this as "work" or "breaking the Sabbath"...it definitely fits in to our family day and allows me some personal "rest time" as well. This Sunday I wasn't able to get out until dark, still had a great experience.

If I didn't have a sermon on Sunday, I might take your approach. Seems to make a lot of sense.

From JimF on Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 17:29:15

Nice tempo run with very consistent splits!

Sorry to jump in your conversation but just to add my two cents. I normally don't run on Sundays either but I ran yesterday after church since my wife and kids were in a meeting. I ran through some trails where the leaves were falling and no one was around. It was definitely a great time/place just to think and reflect on the greatness of God and his creation.

BTW, hope the foot gets better!

From rockness18 on Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 19:54:28

Made it to the gym today.  Did 25 minutes of leg-work- nautilus + light squats.  Followed up with a 7-mile run on the treadmill...seemed like 40 miles!

Mile 1: 7:55 pace

Miles 2-4:  6:35 pace

Mile 5:  7:45 pace

Miles 6-7:  6:27 pace

Foot's still tender...doesn't seemed to act up much until miles 8-10.  I'll continue to keep off pavement most of this week...see if that helps.  My wife noticed the tenderness seems to be on the portion of the foot that is affected by the slope in the road when running against traffic.  Suggested even running on the other side of the road (on streets less affected by traffic).

I've finally come to terms with my denial. Although my foot isn't horrible, I'm not allowing it to heal properly. Rather then fighting it, I'm going to ease back into my running schedule. Maybe even take a few days off. This will be difficult due to how good my legs feel, yet it's just silly to rush into things when I have almost 5 months to prepare for Boston.

Good judgement. You won't lose a thing and will come back stronger. Might be a time to get it checked out by an MD or Podiatry just to make sure it's nothing serious. Lots of little bones in there you know. Just my 2 cents and clears up all doubt. Get well soon.

From rockness18 on Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 10:13:40

Thanks. I'm actually taking your advice. My wife's setting up an appointment for next week- rather be safe than sorry. I've had several aches and pains and have an extremely high level of pain tolerance, but I'm trying to see the "big picture" for Boston and want to get the best training in possible. Might as well start on the right foot.

From JimF on Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 10:28:32

Dave, I think you are smart for having your foot checked out. As you said you have a lot of time before Boston so good to get everything straight so that you can come back even stronger. You have a great base so some time off won't hurt. Hopefully, nothing serious maybe the rest will take care of it.

From Robert on Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 10:31:37

Yes, you probably developed that higher pain threshold from years of weight training. Once you get use to always being sore in weight training I think it desensitizes running induced pains. We might see the pain as no big deal, just a part of the process, and keep running. While others not use to persistent exercise induced pain might stop early. It can be both good and bad, but the trap is pushing too far while in pain from injury. I've had to work on that and be more sensitive to pain levels and what my body is telling me. Just some thoughts.

From rockness18 on Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 18:01:57

Jim, yes I'm hoping the doctor just prescribes rest. Robert, your assessment makes a lot of sense. I'd of kept going, but my body (or at least foot) would completely shut down. That's not normal for me. Got to the point where 10 miles was the absolute limit. Then I could only limp.

Have a doctor's appointment set for Monday morning. This will end my speculation. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

From jtshad on Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 16:26:59

Good choice. That is what I recently did with my foot problem and it cleared up with about a weeks rest (luckily it wasn't the issue that I feared). Besides, the break from running was not bad as it made me want to run again instead of feeling like I have to.

Good luck with the Doc on Monday.

Went to the foot doctor today.  Upon examination of x-rays, determined no structural damage.  However, he saw clear inflammation around the 4th metatarsal and prescribed a weeks worth of anti-inflammation medication.  A few of his suggestions included- new dress shoes, icing/stretching, a little trail running substituted for road running (he is not a big fan of treadmills) and taking it somewhat easy this week.  However, he made it clear not to stop running.  He did not want to see me lose fitness in preparation for Boston.  He wants to see how things go over the next week or to (easing back into a "normal" running schedule) and then come back if I'm still having problems.  He said my condition was not common, yet also not rare.

Did 45-minutes worth of strength/core work at the gym + 2 miles of light running.

That's great news!! I wonder why he's not a fan of the mill? I've found it to be an excellent tool for injury recovery. However, you do have to pay attention more to form than on the road. Take it easy.

From JimF on Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 10:06:25

Glad to hear that it is not too serious and that you can continue running. I have been doing some trail running recently and have really been enjoying it. Do you have some trails close by? Hope the foot gets back to normal quickly.

From rockness18 on Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 10:51:40

Thanks guys! Robert, my doctor's not necessarily against the "mill", but does not like the motorized feature and synthetic surface. He agreed it might be easier on my legs/knees, but not necessarily on my feet. I didn't completely follow him on this, but agreed that I'm basically picking up my legs while the machine keeps on spinning. Jim, we do have a ton of trails around us. I enjoy running them, yet it's hard to get an accurate measurement on how far I'm going (maybe that's ok). It feels good to get back out there!

Went to the track.  Jogged 1st mile, picked it up at a comfortable pace for 2 miles (13:55), jogged the 4th mile, alternated a tiny bit of speed for the 5th mile (very controlled) which included 2 x 400 (1:28, 1:29) w/400 jogs in between, ran 6th mile at comfortable pace (7:02), and jogged final mile.  Felt like continuing, but am really going to be careful to ease back into things.

Great run! Your being smart by easing back in. Because a marathon does cause a lot of tissue damage and swelling and by doing recovery runs and slow runs it will make the healing faster. Now I need to practice what I preach after a marathon for me. :-)

It's nice to have someone to run with when their slower, because it makes you patient and you know you won't run faster on a recovery run. At times I wish I could have this to, because I always end up going too fast on my recovery runs.

My day off is tomorrow, so I'll get a full running workout in- thinking of a progressive-type run.  The foot is feeling great.  Still plan on easing my way back to "normal" running schedule.  Think I've gained like 4-5 pounds, but it should peel off fairly easily once I'm back in stride.

It was bitter cold out this morning.  My initial intention was to do a progressive run, finding a trail and giving it a gradual push.  Made it 3 miles down to a trail and found it to be 5-10 degrees cooler.  My fingers and face were completely numb, so I spent just half a mile in the woods and came back out to the streets.  Ran a couple miles up to the track and at this point felt still felt fairly good, so ran a mile in 6 minutes flat.  Again, just so cold, I found it difficult to breath.  Rather than fight the weather, I toned it back down and headed home.  Ran a total of 9.5 miles, mostly at 8:30-45 pace.  Foot was not a factor.

Might revisit doing a 10k Turkey Trot.  It is being held in Goshen and is one of the toughest courses in all of CT...there's like 6-8 hills.  Noticed folks with sub-40 pr's were running it in 42-44 minutes last year.  If I can discipline myself to continue to be gradual in my recovery, I'll enter and treat it as a training run.  If I feel any discomfort between now and then, I may use it to help pace my wife.

I have a North Face Flight jacket that's very thin and easy to run in, and I wear a regular tri dri long sleeve under that. Then you want a good pair of mittens. That's all I wear in the coldest weather from 30 to below zero and I don't get cold. The jacket is wind and water resistent.

Overall, felt very good about the race this morning.  Did 3-mile warm-up.  Sizeing up the field (500 runners) and the times from last year, my goal was top 50 and a time under 45 minutes.  This was the most challenging course I have ever run (6 fairly strong hills) and felt as though my pacing remained consistent throughout.

Mile 1:  6:30 (Had to exert myself for a hill that cover the last .25)

Mile 2:  6:30 (Probably the hardest I ran for the entire race)

Mile 3:  7:10 (.75 uphill followed by a sharp decline back down)

Mile 4:  7:28 (Not that bad a hill, just pretty much covered most of the mile...my legs began to really feel it)

Mile 5:  7:47 (nastiest stretch of the race...kept a solid pace...held position)

Last 1.2:  7:40 (nice gradual slope downward, followed by one sharp upward hill, and ending w/a .2 mile stretch that was flat...ran this stretch at a 6:23 pace and felt strong at the finish)

Overall, if this was a flat course, I really feel as though I had it in me to maintain a 6:20-30 pace...the hills were challenging, yet I seemed to push through them with strength.  This is officially my 10k pr (although I've shattered that time within a 1/2 marathon and 20k).

I'm very pleased with my run today.  Having completed a 10k yesterday, I didn't expect to do anything special.  As I set out, my intent was a 20-miler, yet within a few miles I knew I was feeling pretty good.  Decided to turn left instead of right to pursue to 22-miler Ed and I measured out last September.  It's extremely challenging, full of hills.

I checked last September's log (20th) to find what I completed it in:  2:55:39 (7:59 pace).  It was my last long run before the marathon taper.  Today I did it in 2:43:22 (7:25 pace).  The first 12.5 was 1:33:35 (7:29 pace) and the last 9.5 was in 1:09:47 (7:21 pace).

In September I weighed 179 lbs...today I was 183 lbs.  My goal for Boston will be a sub-3hour and I hope to get my weight down to 175lbs.  The 8 lbs alone might help shave 16-20 seconds per mile which puts be almost there (I was 182lbs for a 7:16 overall marathon pace).  Nutrition diet starts today!

I had to laugh today.  Ed did not know I was running a 20-miler yesterday and found a semi-long run for today full of hills.  Asked if I was up for something new and I heard my self saying, "sure, why not?"  First 5 miles was "killer".  I joked that he was sadistic and sticking it to me.  He replied, "You haven't seen anything yet."  Sure enough, the next 5 miles was a series of hills unlike anything I've ever run.  Felt like the streets of San Francisco.  I joked that he was just going to keep hitting me with hills until I dropped.  He quipped back, yeah each new one's like a punch to the gut.  We ended up running 13.6 miles in 1:52:49 (8:18 pace).  I'm now heading off to run with my 9-year-old, Courtney.  She's getting ready for the "Jingle Bell Run", a 3-miler next Saturday.

Finished off the day by running with Courtney.  She ran the 1st mile in 8:25.  Then we ran a sequence of three half-miles with a 1-minute break between each.  Kept about an 8:40 pace.  She is hoping to run 3.1 next Saturday.  I think she'll do fine.

Beautiful weather today- low 50's.  Jogged down to the track at about an 8:45 pace...felt rather sluggish.  Decided to run the first mile on the track without looking at my watch...wanted to see how close I could get to mp (6:53) by feel.  Mile was fairly effortless (despite feeling sluggish), yet hard to judge by about a 15mph wind...did it in 7 minutes flat.  Speed up the second mile with the thought of a 3-mile tempo run...again wanted to run by feel.  Part way through decided if I came in between 6 and 6:10, I'd finish the tempo...did it in 6:20.  Felt as though I should save the tempo run for tomorrow when my legs might be a little more fresh.  Decided to run a third mile by feel to see if I could nail the mp pace...finished it in 6:50 flat- pretty darn close!  Again, the wind was making it tough to judge, but I'm starting to grasp a better feel for pacing.  Jogged a mile slowly and then picked up the pace to a 7:30-40ish range on the final 2 miles home.  Total of 9 miles.

Nice run! It is nice to be able to judge your pace by feel. Looks like you did a good job of this. Also, it is nice to be able to run your goal MP comfortably.

No records set today.  Was up last night until 2:45, doing a paper for school.  Made it to the gym and got a quick workout in.  It's a challenging time of year to get in the workouts.

Jogged down to Whites Woods (1.5 miles).  Ran a 5k on a trail course in 19:42 (5:52, 6:50, 6:13).  Felt good with the effort, considering it was off-road and I have had two poor nights of sleep.  Would love to get my 5k efforts closer to the 19minute range...it's been hard to work on speed with the weather conditions.  Jogged 1.5 back for 6 mile total.

Nice run! It is hard to work on speed this time of year but every little bit helps build the base for Spring.

Good point...I was so ambitious after finishing the last marathon, but have had to "calm down" due to schedule, injuries, and just being so plain cold. Maybe this is just the maintaining/building base stage...I'll try to keep that in perspective.

From Robert on Thu, Dec 04, 2008 at 11:15:28

Hang in there and keeping trudging through December. You'll feel better at the beginning of the year, but then there is February (anoother trough). Stay in contact with your body signals as you build more ambition.

The weather was in the high 30's so I broke away in the afternoon to get another tempo run in.  Normally wouldn't do 2 days in a row, but I'm willing to take what the weather will give me.  Jogged 1.5 miles down to White's Woods.  Ran the 5k trail course hard...didn't have great expectations based on having run it hard yesterday.  Felt satisfied to run it in 19:50 (5:58, 6:55, 6:12).  Honestly, that middle hill is a bear!  Took a 4 minute rest and decided to run the same course with a goal of keeping new marathon goal pace.  Figure tired running would give me a sense of how I'm progressing.  Ran the 2nd 5k in 22:35 (6:58, 7:59, 6:52).  Was very happy to nail the 3rd mile in almost exactly my goal pace.  The middle hill is just nasty, so I just kept the same effort and allowed the time to slow down.  Jogged 1.5 miles back for a total of 9.2 miles.  Although the speed work may be a challenge in the winter, I want to at least be able to maintain what I have and perhaps continue to broaden my running base with hills and distance.  I've decided to skip the 5k event in town this weekend (to do a longer training run) and have signed up for a 10-mile run two weeks from Saturday.  They advertise themselves as having the most challenging course in New England (steep hills).  I will not concern myself with pr's this winter/spring (will be happy if they come) and will focus more on challenging courses to prepare for the hills of Boston.  Boston is where I want my new pr.

Really? Interesting. My goal is to break 3 hours. What aspect of running do you think would help me the most? Speed, hills, endurance, etc. I will address them all, but would like to address my weak areas as well as aspects that will help prepare my for the Boston course.

From wheakory on Fri, Dec 05, 2008 at 14:18:15

I would still focus on rolling hills, but you really don't need anything real steep hills to train on. I did hill repeats to prepare for Boston and that really helped, along with Yasso 800's.

I would just make sure in your training that you are running a lot of rolling hill courses and every other week alternate between hill repeats and yasso 800's or 1600's on the track or wherever.

Good solid run this morning. Took Ed's route from last week (Pie Hill Road) and ran it backwards. Crazy hills- doesn't matter which way you go, still the most challenging hill course I've ever face. Gave it a nice push this time and came through the 13.6 in 1:47:12 (7:53 pace). Also, did 1.5 warm-up run. Started cold, but got used to the weather as the run progressed. Weight: 181 lbs

Nice solid workout. That's a good course to train for Boston. Even if you just ran one hilly course a week to train for Boston that's all you need.

Do you have an email address? I want to send you this Excel Spreadsheet on Boston that calculates your pace per mile for whatever ending time you want at Boston. It tells you what you should run per mile at Boston to get your time according to the course.

Today was a semi-recovery run.  Ran with Ed through rolling hills- not as crazy as yesterday, yet still challenging.  Temperature was 16 degrees and we kept a nice solid pace throughout- 13.5 miles in 1:48:42 (8:03 pace).  Finished the run and went to the gym for a leg work-out- squats, leg extensions/curls/calf raises.  Felt really good today.  After 4 straight days of solid running- 2 5k's under 20 min + two long hill runs, plan to take tomorrow completely off (maybe a few crunches/sit-ups).  I'm finally understanding the concept of "weekend warriors".  Looks as though these cold weeks may involve short, quick lunch breaks during the week and double long-runs on the weekend.  I just can't get myself to get up early and run in the dark...especially with temperatures in the low teens.  Would rather run 30-40 minutes hard during lunch break in mid to high 20's and sun.

Family is great and running is going well, I started a 20 week program for Boston, I should email it to you so you can compare with what your doing. Its a great program, intense but not a ton of miles.

Thanks for the comment the other day. If you want this program to look at send me an email at miles26.2@gmail.com and I find it and forward it to you.

Today was a real test.  I really wanted to run outside, but the streets were just too icey.  Took it to the treadmill for the 5th straight day.  Decided I must do speed work.  Just didn't feel an ounce of it in my legs...determined to do it anyway.

Mile 1:  9 minutes- sluggish

Mile 2:  8 minutes- more effort than usual

Mile 3:  7 minutes- felt border line tempo

Mile 4-5.75:  6:15 pace for 1.75- had decided to push it for 3 miles...couldn't hang on

.25 miles:  jog

Mile 6:  6 minute pace for .50 miles, .50 jog

Mile 7:  6 minute pace for .50 miles, .25 jog, .25 again at 6 minute pace

Mile 8:  9 minute mile

Overall, able to get 3 miles of "speed work" done, but it was not pleasant at all.  Glad I did it.  Hope to get a long run in tomorrow...outside!

When you feel your body doesn't want to do speed work don't force the issue. Because you could cause your form to be uncomfortable and cause an injury.

Great run today. Winter outside for me definitely takes the zap out of my leg to do speed work.

Well, the race today was postponed due to inclimate weather.  Started an attempt to run outside this morning...too dangerous.  Went to the gym and decided to do a tempo run on tm at a 6 minute/per mile pace.  Made it to 3-miles fairly easy, so decided to continue on towards a 4th.  At 3.5 miles, thought 5 might be possible.  At 3.75 miles, began to second guess it.  At 4-miles decided to pursue mile 5, but stop immediately if my form were to begin to suffer.  Learned alot about myself on mile 5.  Just as as was about to give in (4.3 miles), I began to experiment with my stride.  By the time I reached 4.5 miles, I was beginning to regain a little strength (felt like I was doing less work).  I almost wondered if the treadmill had slowed down (it does that when you do not keep up with programmed pace).  Finished mile five successfully and then slowed to a 10 minute pace for .50 miles.

After slowing for 1/2 mile, sped back up to marathon goal pace (6:48) for .50 miles and was pretty beat.  Slowed back down for another .50 miles and then picked it up again to mp for a mile this time (was happy to see I was regaining strength).  Cooled down for final 1/2 mile.  Did 9-miles total (including warm-up outside).  Felt like a made the most of a rotten day.

Trying to make the most of running indoors.  Did a little bit of speedwork today.  Started with a progressive warm-up, beginning with a 9 min/mile pace up to 6 min/mile (for 2 miles).

Then I began a Yasso 800 workout on the treadmill (1 incline), starting with a speed that would be impossible to maintain for 10 sets.  Just wanted to see how far I could take it.  Kept a 5:30 min/mile pace for 6 sets (1/2 mile each) with .25 mile jog in between sets.  On set number 6, my form began to suffer, so I took a 2-minute break to get water.

Jogged another .25 and then did a mile at 6 min pace, jogged another .25 and did a second mile at 6 min pace (which finished the distance expected in a Yasso 800).  Jogged a final mile.

Total of 10 miles.  I'm beginnning to feel a little bit of explosiveness in my legs.  Speedwork on the treadmill is probably not ideal, yet it's forcing me to keep a certain speed  and seems to be helping me with form.  The 50-60 miles weeks also seem more condusive for speedwork.  When the weather breaks, I plan on getting a good endurance week or two in.  I'll just try to be flexible with whatever I can get in a this time of year.

Still depleted from last week's illness.  Ran 2 miles on the treadmill...did 20-minutes weights.  Am beginning to eat a little better, but can still only stomach half-size meal portions.  I'm looking forward to regaining energy and strength.  Hopefully, the "rest" will help in the long-run.  Might do a 5-mile road race on Thursday...only if my energy is back by then.  It's another very hilly course.

Good to hear you are feeling a little better. Hope you are back to 100% soon.

Thanks...it was a nasty stomach bug. I'm feeling much better today, but now spreading to the rest of the family.

Back on the treadmill.  Missed a great streak of good weather due to illness.  Felt about 90% today...good enough to do a little speed work.  Jogged 2 miles warm-up, did 3 x 1 mile repeats at a 5:45 pace (1 incline).  Jogged 1 cool down mile.

Energy was high enough to continue workout, but I felt it would be wise to ease back into things.  Want to get back to my 10-mile per/day average starting with the New Year.  Would be great to get back to 270-300 mile average for Jan/Feb/March.  December was rough with the weather/illness/foot issues, yet I've made it back to almost full health without losing too much fitness...don't mind the cold, but can't wait for later sunlight!

Nice strong finish to the year.  Due to another snowstorm, back in the gymn on the treadmill.

1st 3 miles:  Began at 10 min/mile pace and increased 3 notches every quarter mile.  Overall, just over a 7:45 avg.

2nd 3 (.1) miles:  Ran a 5k in 17:48.  Not a time I've been able to achieve outdoors and may not accurately reflect my realistic speed right now, yet still happy with the effort.

Last 3.9 miles:  Another progressive run, peaking at 6:48 (mp) and remaining there for the final mile.

Logged a total of 1946 miles this year, dating back to May.  I did not log Jan-April, yet a conservative guestimate would give me 100 miles in January, 120 miles in February, 150 miles in March, and 180 miles in April.  This would give me approximately 2,500 miles for 2008.  My best guess for 2007 would be 300-400 miles total.  My best guess for 2006 would be around 200-300 miles total.  I began the year weighing in at 205 lbs, so have lost a total of 26 1/2 pounds.  Lord willing, I hope to build upon this new base and have fun in 2009 experiencing new places/races and establishing new records and goals.  The focus for now is Boston (sub-3), then for the first time I will shift focus towards improving times in local road races and staying healthy/balanced.
