Ran the Hartford Marathon as a training run for Philly in 5 weeks.  I was a bit nervous for 2 reasons- 1) I have not completed a 20-mile run since March  2) My achilles have been acting up all summer.

I decided to stick with the 3:15 pace group and hang with them as long as I felt healthy.  This would get me a good slow mp run in- my longest mp run this Fall has been 9 miles and even that has been broken up as tempo or interval training.  My achilles were sore for the first two miles and were never again an issue.  I stuck with the "3:15ers" through 16 miles (even catching back up w/them after a potty break) and was thrilled by having held a 7:20 pace for all that time.  The only negative was that I was running in a new pair of shoes and had developed a major blister by mile six (bigger than a silver dollar).  At about 16.5 miles I saw a puddle in a neighborhood driveway and decided to take of shoes/socks and soak for a bit.  Jumped back on the course and kept a nice easy pace until mile 22 (8:30-40ish).  At mile 22 I stopped again to address the blister + stretch and then decided to pick it up for a mile to see how the legs were- ran miles 23 and 24 at 7:40 pace.  Stopped again at the end of 24 to stretch and rub my "hot foot".  Cruised in with a time on my watch of 3:35:14- happy with the run!  The best part is, besides the blister, I did not beat myself up, so hope to put in a few extra 70 mile weeks and another 20-miler before Philly.

My wife ran the half and finished barely over 2 hours- not bad for a mom of 6!  She loved the course and was happy with her time. Overall, a great day!

Well, first big congratulations to your wife! It is so hard to find to train and be a mom, if I had one more kids I think it might do me in!!!

Sorry to hear about the blister, but glad that you had a great LONG run. Sounds like you are ready for the real thing in a month.

My achilles does the same thing, BTW. After a few miles it feels fine. BUT after this last marathon, it was so sore for a week or so. SO, make sure you are stretching those things like crazy!!!

Good run... now at least hopefully you won't have to worry about blister problems at Philly! And getting in a solid long run like that is always a confidence booster. I can't believe Philly is only 5 weeks away now!

Nice training run! I'm so impressed that you 26.2 miles off only a 9 miler. Soak your feet in some epsom salt and warm water! Your wife did great as well :)

thanks guys! Kelli, you seem to manage quite well for 5 kids yourself! Also, Jake and Andrea, are you both running Philly? I'll keep an eye out for you- obviously won't keep up with your times, but will hopefully be alot closer than today.

5 is NOT 6! And one is actually an adult, so she does not count (although the stress she causes me....)

Great job on the marathon "training" run. Looks like you should do great in 5 weeks.

thanks...I feel so ready to run, but that dang blister is killing me!

Have you popped and slit it so it can not refill and then let it dry out?? Also, if you put Aquafor on it every day with your socks, it will be back to good in no time! I got a massive blood blister running the St George marathon---it was seriously sticking out almost a half of an inch and it was about 2 inches long. It was the worst i have ever had. But, I went in the medical tent and they took care of it. 2 weeks later, it was completely peeled off and healed.

Thanks...I've done the pop, slit, etc. and taking care of it each day. It was seriously deep, yet has vastly improved. My wife has been calling me a baby for the past few days, so I'm needing to buck up and stop milking things. :)
