Was able to get outside today.  High 20's with 10-12 mph crosswinds.  Hit the Goshen hills...roads were partially clear, while paths were caked in snow.  Ran most of the clear sections in a 6:30ish pace and the caked sections (w/hills) in 7:30-8ish pace.

1st 5.15 miles:  36:49 (7:09 pace)...felt very good with this.  With any type of traction would have been well under a 7:00 minute pace.  Crawled up hills and ran gingerly back down them.

2nd 5.15 miles:  38:57 (7:34 pace)  Generally kept the same pace.  However, there was 1 winding hill that lasted 3/4 of a mile with no traction whatsoever.

Overall, very satisfied with the effort today.  With the challenging weather, my desire it to get hill work in whenever I'm able to get outside.  I'll continue to do speedwork on the treadmill.

Total mileage= 10.5 miles (2 minute jog in the middle)

Great workout! Your going to achieve all your goals this year I know it. I did the same thing last year and didn't let the weather defeat my goals and everything came in place.

I admire your dedication and attitude.

Question non-running related (let me know in the future if you would like this posted to your private email instead). How much do you study each week in God's word? Do you study in the mornings?

Kory,

It is fine to post non-running comments on my blog. Thank you for the encouragement and feedback in regards to my running.

I do spend a lot of time in study, preparing for a sermon and 2 Bible studies each week (average about 20 hours per/week). However, I am careful to separate my study time from my daily devotional life. Currently, I have started the new year by committing myself to approximately 2 chapters OT + 1 chapter NT each day (no commentaries, study guides, etc...just ask for God's Spirit to open my ear/eyes and speak to me in a fresh way each day). My new year's resolution has been to strengthen my discipline of journalling (which has been lacking of late). I treat journal time as reflection/meditation/prayer.

I noticed you are doing devotions with your wife. Thank you for posting this. My wife and I have strayed a bit from doing this together. We normally have a devotional time around the dinner table in the evening with family. We have been less consistent with this in the past couple of months. You have inspired me to return to this valuable format in our household.

Oh, and yes, morning is my best time for devotions. Evenings are a good time for me to read other extra-biblical material. Currently, I have just started "The Prodigal God" by Timothy Keller. This book was endorsed by both Billy Graham and Rick Warren.

I believe part of the reason I have become so "hooked" on running is that it has so many parallels to our Christian faith. My challenge is to keep the proper balance and enjoy this outlet to the fullest. - 1 Tim. 4:7-8

Thanks for the information. I just finished reading the whole new Testment which took a while. Now I feel I need to read one book from the Old Testment and one book from the New Testment to keep that fresh. I feel through prayer that's where God is leading me.

I've read the books "The Purpose Driven Life and The Purpose Driven Church", by Rick Warren. Lately I haven't read anything outside the Bible which is bad, because it is something I could do.

Running is great and when you keep the balance. It does make you feel good, and your taking care of your body which is the Temple of GOD. Hopefully, I can get that balance back and not feel the addictive need to run.

You've really excel and like I said if you stick to your strategy you will achieve all the goals you want.

Warren's books are solid. He's taken some flack from the press lately for standing up for his values...more power to him. Other reading is nice, yet you're wise to keep your Bible reading a priority. I have the luxury to give additional time due to my full-time profession.
