Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

Okay, okay - nobody freak out. I didn't really 'run' these miles, but you know what? I'm going to give myself a break for Christmas and New Years and realize that I AM worth it and even though they aren't 'pure' miles - I'm counting them! I worked hard for them, harder than running anyway, and persistence, grit and determination helped propel me 52 laps around a track. It may have taken 4 hours and my quad and knee are SO stinkin' rotten sore right now that I may not be able to walk in the morning, but gosh darn it! I did it! I deserve these miles!! So, my gift to myself is a little leniency on my 'pure' miles calculation and I'm taking my 14.25 miles I scooted today!

Through my whining and complaining with this fracture my sweet neighbor who just had major surgery on her left calf to remove malignant melanoma (and who listens to my crazy whining and complaining about not being able to run even though she just shakes her head and tells me if I want to have to ice myself when I'm done with an activity that hurts me I should just bang my head against the wall for an hour :) ) told me I could borrow her knee scooter so that I could go to my race today. Well, it gave me hope - and fun ideas! I could go and cheer every one on and scoot a few laps with my running pals. Hey...this just might work after all. I was excited!

Scooter Pride baby! :)

Picked up the scooter last night and on the way into the Olympic Oval I decided to ride it, practice - right?!? Well, all was well until I hit a crack on the sidewalk and went flying over the handle bars. HA! Talk about feeling dumb and embarrassed. I'm already a gimp then this? People infront of me and behind me asked if I was okay. I quickly popped up and said "yup, I'm good" I was thinking "don't look at me - hurry, get me out of here so you don't recognize me!!" Luckily nothing like this happened again.

The race was a 4 hour race at the Oval and you could start or finish any time between 8-12 and you could run as much or as little as you wanted. All I needed was one lap to not DNS or DNF - I'm in! :) Chatted with Maurine, Leslie, Maynard and some ladies from a Tri group at the rec center that do the masters swim class. Before the leaders came around to complete their first lap I started scooting. Half way through the first lap my quad was BURNING on FIRE. Oh boy...this is going to be a long 4 hours. Well, after a few laps Becca got there and we started off together. I would do every other lap to let my quad rest, but then I figured out I could raise the platform your knee is on - bingo! Not nearly as much quad pain. I then could do 3 or 4 laps at a time.

Had some great chats with Becca, despite being interrupted nearly every lap about questions or comments from other runners about my situation. All of it positive. People were calling me inspiring - HA! Trust me, no inspiration here, just hard headedness! I didn't think I'd do all that many miles: 4-6ish, but 2 hours in they told me I had a 10K done...rockin'! It was then I figured if I could let go of 'pure' miles I could finish my last 13 miles. I could do this, I just have to be nice to myself and realize that I've worked awfully hard for this and that I deserve it! Not just in an 'everybody gets a trophy' kind of way, but in a much more personal way. I had too much invested and too much conquered this year to put myself in this 13 mile hole. I was going to claw, crawl, dig and kick my way out!! So, then the race was on...

I'd scooter 3-4 laps then walk one to give my leg and knee a break. Everyone wanted a ride and I told them they could gladly take a turn. It was hard - seriously hard. You have no idea. My arms, hip, back, quad and knee are so terribly sore I'm not sure I'll be able to walk tomorrow!! I think running even 20 miles would've been easier on my body than what I did. Not so tough cardio wise - although still good, but my pony tail never got wet :) but muscularly, ouch. Well, at least on one leg.

I was ecstatic when I asked how many laps I was at and they told me 2 shy of my 1/2 marathon. Wow! I still had like 20 minutes left...I felt like a rockstar. Many people had left and especially after 3 hours the crowd thinned a TON, but I was still there...still plugging along, to the bitter end!! We finished our 2nd to last lap and they said 1 minute left, but they would let you finish your last lap as long as you were over the line when time ran out. So, I parked the scooter and walked in my last lap. I certainly wasn't fast - 6:30, but I did it. Very proud of my new found scooting endurance :)

Won a prize in the raffle (some crazy chia seed energy/hydration drink mix...not so sure about it, maybe in smoothies), and even confiscated a pocket full of Milky Way Midnights from the aid station :) I think Becca and I were the last to head out - the bitter end!

They have me recorded for 52 laps which is 14.28 miles, but with my analness I will have to just call it 14.25, but probably closer to 14.5 since I was on the outside of the track :) My fastest lap was 2:20 - cruisin'! Probably one of the laps I made Becca do some speed work. It was great to scoot with friends and chat along. This really totally satisfied my emotional need that running fulfills. Still not the same physical needs, but man - this was good!! I seriously have never participated in such an awesome race. But, I don't suggest anyone do it next year...I don't want it too crowded or expensive :)

I ended up 85th in # of laps completed out of 260ish participants and 42/160ish women. Not too shabby for scooting :) So, I hope you all can forgive me my sin of tainting my pure running miles, but dang it - I deserve this one! Best.Race.Ever.

Thanks for an awesome time Becca! (don't mind the crappy picture, we're not professionals and had just spent 4 hours running/scooting in circles :) ).

That is really amazing that you find a way to run a half marathon even with a broken foot. Great job.

O Rachel! I am crying and smiling as I read this! BEST race report of guts and inspiration, not to mention creativity EVER EVER EVER!!!

LOVE your determination, tenacity and spunkiness! When you texted me and said you were going to scoot around! I had no idea how in the world you were going to do it! I though you meant dragging your booted leg around to cheer. I had no idea you worked your other leg to death to make every single stinkin'

Hope the hip, back and quad and knee recover well for you today! Take a nice long REST day and week will ya? CONGRATULATIONS on a mighty fine placement too!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR, my made in America daughter! Love you!!! :)

OH, I LOVE the pictures! I fondly remember running there with you last year on New Year Day...we did 55 laps!!! That was one of the best NY present! So happy you topped the year off with an amazing gift yo yourself! :)

14+ scooting miles sounds tough! Not quite sure how you were able to do a 2:20 lap, that's pretty fast. Glad you had a great time!

From Lily on Sun, Jan 01, 2012 at 13:13:32 from 67.199.178.210

Wow I am impressed!

hey it's BEC?! I love her! :)

Happy new year. Just rest and get better. Things will work out Rach.

I'm glad you found a way to get your goal. I'd call those miles legit. How are you going to keep track of them on your shoes? Are you worried about uneven wear? haha

From Toby on Sun, Jan 01, 2012 at 13:52:06 from 199.101.225.254

YOU ARE A ROCK STAR!!! You truly have the heart of an athlete - never give up! Way to go Rachel!

From RAD on Sun, Jan 01, 2012 at 18:19:20 from 98.202.23.178

Nancy, thanks - it was just pure craziness :)

Smooth, oh you are too sweet. We did get a medal, of sorts. The blue necklace thing I'm wearing in the scooter picture is the medal. Kind of cheap, but still pretty cool! I wish you could've been there too - you seriously would've LOVED it!

Andrea, you must remember I had wheels :) Sometimes I would push hard and make Becca do some speed work - it was fun!

Lily, yes - it is Bec. Things must heal up - no way am I going to sacrifice possible surgery and 6 months off!!!

Kam, that made me laugh. Yes, I actually talked to Becca about that! Since there isn't a ton of impact I just grabbed a pair that I had retired (not even on shoe calculator any more) and am just wearing one of them, because I can't figure out how to make it work with my good shoes!

Toby, athlete...psychopath...meh, details :)

Wow, that was wild Ms. RAD! You are now the "Scoot-Queen"! What a way to bring the New Year, Happy New Year to you and yours!!!

I'm excited for you! Congratulations on getting in your yearly miles. I't cool how you found a way to do it. If you do that too much you'll probably end up lopsided from overdeveloping one side. :)

From glidergirl on Mon, Jan 02, 2012 at 09:38:25 from 155.100.9.11

RACHEL! That is so awesome!! You could have easily stayed home and had another pity party, but instead you FINISHED your 2011 goal! That is inspiring. :) Of course you should count those miles! Congrats! :)

From The Quiet Pirate on Mon, Jan 02, 2012 at 16:23:42 from 152.26.59.252

Job well done :-) I am proud you found a way to conquer the "funk" and meet your goals.

I read about the chia energy stuff in the "born to run" book. It's supposed to be the best thing ever. Let me know if it is. Happy new year.

From JulieC on Mon, Jan 02, 2012 at 18:45:40 from 67.41.188.93

YOU are VERY INSPIRATIONAL!! Those things have NEVER looked easy just riding around. Can't imagine strolling for 14+ miles!! I was wondering what sport you had said you had picked up!! Happy New Year Friend!! how much longer in the boot?

From Andrea on Mon, Jan 02, 2012 at 19:42:36 from 67.177.21.60

Rachel - thought you might find this interesting and slightly uplifting :o) http://sweatscience.com/training-one-limb-to-strengthen-the-other/

All I can say Wow! Oh yeah, and how we're the Milky Way midnights?

From Steam8 on Mon, Jan 02, 2012 at 23:44:52 from 166.70.55.77

Oh my heck! You are even more crazy than I am and I didn't think that was possible! I love it! I hope you are feeling okay today and not too sore from all the scootering!

From RAD on Tue, Jan 03, 2012 at 02:32:26 from 98.202.23.178

Slick, thanks. It was the best time!

Chad, my quad is SO sore! yes, just the one :) I figure if I kill it once a week it will keep up with the R :)

Brooke, thanks. you know how this crazy determination to get through things really push us to the edge!

QP, well, the chia seeds make a gel type substance that is more of a slow release of water. Kind of weird and it tastes blechy. If I actually get a package off to the bucaneer for her birthday I'll send you some!

Julie, thanks, no idea about the boot. I'm suspecting probably 4-6 weeks from x-rays (12/24), but it all depends on how well my body is healing. I have an appointment with the ortho/sports doc on 1/10 for follow up x-rays and I'll know more then.

Andrea, that is too funny! I was actually talking to someone about that at the race. I had learned that in my sports med class forever ago and keep thinking that keeping good strength in my L calf/ankle WILL help. So, I'm glad to see that I really did remember something correctly and I wasn't making it all up - I'm good at that :)

Terri, oh, I am STILL enjoying those :) LOVE the little mini ones. Perfect bite size of a treat! Just don't eat 30 of them in one sitting :)

Amy, I'm not crazy...I'm just bored :) Oh, and as far as sore goes - it is horrible. Seriously worse than SGM on the quad - just one! That is the only good thing is that it is my bad foot quad so I can walk on a straight knee. It is hillarious to watch when I try and bend my knee or get off my stride. My arms flail and I nearly die! That and my arm, my upper R bicep (from turning left!) hurts like crazy too. I never imagined 14 miles could hurt so bad, especially on wheels! :)
