Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:


Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

I couldn't take it. I'm going crazy!!! So, I went to the gym this morning. Wandered around a bit from machine to machine looking for some sort of cardio I could do. First tried the hand crank spin bikes - fail. I just don't like how they 'pedal' it's weird. Found a machine an elliptical/recumbent bike hybrid, seems to work well in the boot. Then I did planks and push-ups. Just over an hour, but enough to make me feel better. I'll try to do at least 90 min of cardio tomorrow.

The insta care called yesterday and told me that a radiologist had read my x-rays and he wanted me in a post op boot and on crutches. I just about died. I told the nurse I was in the Bledsoe boot and things seemed great this weekend - I can walk in it without much pain and I really didn't want to be on crutches!! She said she didn't think the radiologist knew I was in the boot, so I'm assuming the doc at insta-care didn't note that he'd given me the boot and this radiologist saw my x-rays and thought they'd just let me walk on out of there. The nurse said the Bledsoe boot was better than the post-op cast and crutches, so to stay in that and follow up with an orthopedic doc unless I heard from her again. So far so good. Made an appointment with Dr Brinton on Jan 10th and I hope to weasel my way into the office before that - I've got a call into the nurse.

Still a lot of swelling and pain. I've got fat piggy toes and my foot is huge. When I wake up in the morning it almost looks normal. I can't wait until I can function at least without this boot on! I'm really not doing well as far as emotional life is concerned, but what can I do? Hang in there and do the stuff around the house I never have time for :)

I am so sorry. I read this a couple days ago and meant to say something. It's so sad to get injured. The bright side my friend is that it's the 'off season'. This was me about a year ago remember? So glad it was during the winter and not the spring. You will get better soon. Positive vibes. fractures are horrible!

Aren't you supposed to keep it elevated?You can't do it can you? My wife had bone spur surgery 2 weeks ago and I can't get her to stay off of her feet either.

Lily, that is the only silver lining, it is the off season.

Chad, no one has ever said anything about keeping it elevated - now staying OFF it is another thing :) I was sitting though, I wasn't 'on' it. I tried, I really did. But, I just can't sit!

You're doing great finding other activities to keep you moving and working without hurting your foot.

I have heard other doctors choose the boot over a cast as well. I'm wondering why & what the advantages are. Let me know if you find out.

I hope you get to enjoy the snow and clean mountain air at the slopes. And some hot cocoa too!

I feel for you, Rach! I woulda curled up in fetal position, drawn the blinds so I wouldn't see anyone running by,stuffed my face with comfy food and read the day away BECAUSE I don't know one to xtrain or go to a gym.

BUT, you my dear take action and find something cardio and still keep up with core strengthening! with your youth and health and fitness level, I am certain that the fracture will heal up fast and you will be back running in no time. :)

It's so hard being hurt. SO hard to keep positive but lots of studies show that a positive attitude helps healing faster. You can definitely keep your fitness with the bike and cross training!

I am so sorry Rachel . Can you lift weights? I have cut out a ton of cardio lately and replaced it with lifting...do you think that could help lift your spirits?

QP, I think the boot provides more stability and allows you to still 'walk' and shower. If I did the post-op cast it would still be removable, but not nearly as stable and I would have to use crutches. The boot is kind of the best of both worlds.

Brooke, I guess I should just be grateful it isn't a displaced fracture. Then I'd be in for surgery! It could always be worse, right?

Andrea, talked to the PT and he said if it doesn't hurt I can bike IN the boot, so I may start biking - a lot! :) That certainly helped my attitude.

Merri, Yes. I can still do anything that doesn't cause pressure/weight on my foot. Maybe if you get a minute you could send me some of your awesome workouts so I can make myself sore and miserable? :)

Julie, I've been thinking a lot about Amber since this happened. I will lean on her expertise a lot!
