Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:


Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

Oh what a race. I have learned much about marathoning in the past 2 years AND 2 days! #6 is in the bag and right now I have NO earthly idea how I will do this again in 3 short weeks. 

I had the best time with Smooth! The people around us may have been annoyed to all get out, but it was one of the most enjoyable marathons I've done. I love being around other amazing runners and feeding off their energy - definitely worth paying for my last long trainer before UVM. 

Things I learned this time around: I must still respect this distance. 3 hours of sleep and not eating well the night/week before to not go well with asking your body to keep you moving at a decent pace for 26+ miles.

*I like hills :) yes, I said it. Don't expect me to ever say it again :) When the hill came at mile 14 I was SO happy and the flats afterward were a dream. I usually look forward to the canyon, but after that first big drop after the dam my legs wanted more hills. I was excited to see little ups on the canyon road and trail.

*Taking a few moments to walk and drink/gu through the water stops is totally worth it! The splits may not seem very nice during the short walk, but being able to get in fuel makes my belly happy and my mind!

*Smooth is an amazing person and I need her on auto-play during every marathon I run!

The day started out much to early - especially since I didn't go to bed like planned and only got 3 hours of sleep. I was SO very grateful for the ride I got up to Ogden so I didn't have to drive home in a delirium afterward. Plus, it was excellent company as well.

The bus ride up is my least favorite part of a marathon. They drive me for what seems like an hour up to the middle of no-where and drop me off and expect me to get back all on my own two feet?!? Yeah...head games.

Waiting at the top was fabulous, got to see a ton of fellow runners and feed off their energy! Also, Smooth got me an extra pair of shoes to wear in the mud - a priceless trick I won't soon forget. Then we were off, started just in front of the 4:00 pacers - perfectly positioned. We started probably a little too fast, but we were just enjoying the run and were definitely at a comfortable pace. Mile 9 was Terry's - a pacemaker eliminated him from our group today and I have some excellent memories of running my first 11 miles with Terry 2 years ago during my first marathon. We ran like horses and enjoyed the perfect weather.

Mile 14 as the hill hit Smooth had forgotten to take her inhaler early and had a small attack on the hill. I'm amazed at her ability and determined mind and body to get through. I tried my best to distract her and get her relaxed and breathing smoothly again. I think I failed miserably, but about a mile later she was back to her regular breathing and sounding a TON better. The dam was next, the uphills were VERY welcome preceding the dam and I almost missed them as we started down the canyon.

My legs started telling me they were done...tired an getting heavy and achy. Lack of training and running starting to rear its ugly head - on my favorite part of the downhill -shoot. I felt like I was just whining and complaining to Smooth every step of the way, so I just shut up and watched the river. It was SO full and raging down the canyon, I would watch the river and imagine floating down it instead of pounding myself to the ground on the road. It helped, a little. Mile 21 Smooth's son joined her and since I wasn't doing her any favors at this point I just pushed on and left her in fresh hands, knowing that if I fell apart she was right behind me and I could wait for her and she and Eric would be there to drag me in.

The best part of the last 5 miles was getting to see my favorite allie in her crossing guard uniform and flag making sure I didn't go off the road and cross the bridge over the river. Good thing, I was planning on it :) But, she got a big sweaty mile 21 hug! Like it or not, I was giving it to her - and had warned her before hand. It was totally her choice to be there and get it!

I tried convincing myself I was out on my normal 4 mile loop with Sandra. Super easy miles, you got this - but my body wasn't buying it. I felt like I was doing more passing and keeping a decent pace, but I knew I was no where near MP and I just stopped looking at my watch. I had passed the 4:00 pacer and I knew I was under that and just pushed through to the end. The faster you run, the faster you finish - c'mon girl.

Finished well and turned to look for Smooth, she was just a few minutes behind me and when I caught site of her Eric was with her - then I felt bad, I knew she had cramped up! STINK! After walking around the finishers area with Eric (good thing he was there - I was SO useless at this point, too much pain and soreness in the hip flexor) we headed off to the car to head home. Another wonderful ride and great company. I just honestly can't say enough about the wonderful woman Smooth is and the amazing family she has! I am truly indebted to them.

I feel good (now) about this race and looking at my splits I didn't fade as much at the end that I thought I did. I guess the mind did overcome the body - the pep talk worked. I'm still not sure about UVM in 3 weeks -  I honestly don't think I could've run this one step faster, my lack of training is showing like nobody's business and I think my time goal at UVM might just need to be re-evaluated. But, I will try not to think of that today...recovery and get back at it.

AP: 9:02 (for the 26.34 I recorded) splits: 8:41, 8:58, 8:46, 8:43, 8:45, 9:13, 8:54, 9:07, 9:14, 8:52, 9:11, 9:29, 9:03, 9:33, 9:52, 9:27, 8:51, 9:05,  9:20, 8:57, 8:33, 9:07, 9:06, 8:59, 8:57 (last .34). Looking at my splits some of them are actually quite remarkable for me, especially knowing that they included a walk to GU and drink. I like that the last couple miles were just a bit progressive. Not intended, but pleased.

I LOVED every second and step of the 21 miles we ran together! Too bad I couldn't finish with you but am super glad you finished strong with progressive faster paces to boot!

I loved reading this too! My least favorite part is the ride up on the bus also....not to mention the sleepless night from too much anxiety. 3 hrs sounds about right. Good work! Nothing is quite like that feeling of finishing!

I really like those last 4 splits. Sounds like you still had a productive 26.2. I think you can still accomplish your goal at UVM. There isn't anything really standing in your way. I say go for it!

Smooth, I only speak honestly (I think you saw the ugly side of some of that Saturday!), but I did have such an amazing time with you! Burt, hmmm...still not seeing it. I may have a bit of endurance on you, but out right speed? You've got that corner...just watch out, I'll take you someday! When you least expect it...

Steam, I don't know why that bus ride plays with my head so much! I think it also has to do with the fact that I get motion sickness winding up the canyons for so long as well.

Merri, Watch out! If you do that you just might get the 21 mile sweat hug too! :) Don't say I didn't warn you...

Lily, the only thing standing in my way is that I can't walk right now :) Hip flexor really isn't happy. It is daily better, but that is with constant nsaids and ice/heat and stretching. I REALLY hope UVM is going to be a good race - I've looked forward to it and will be disappointed if it isn't, but we can only do what our bodies will allow, right?

Cal, much stronger than anticipated! I still think you should've joined us for the fun group run :)

gdoc, thanks! Much of the credit must go to Smooth though. There were times her smooth, quick steps kept me on pace when I would have rather slowed down a bit.

QP, thanks. It was a fun race with lots of good memories. I'm glad I was able to finish as well, I may be paying for it now - but it was good then!

Stacie, I thought you were in FRONT of us! I only remember you passing and I didn't see us pass you back. STINK! You should've yelled at us and we would've drug you along! :) I'm assuming your race is posted now. Must go over and check it out!

Brent, running warrior...I like it. Yes, quads/hip flexor aren't all that happy. If I like the hills that means the downhills beat me up too much? You are SO knowledgeable! I wish you could pace me through a race sometime.

I am so glad you got to run with Smooth. Anyday on the trail with that lady is worth the trip. That is really why we run anyway isn't it? To be outside with friends going through thick and thin? I can't believe you can just pick up and run a marathon....Catherine just ran 18 miles with me Saturday after not running more than 4-5 miles at a time since DC. Oh, to be young again:) I loved your report, and I'm so happy you finished. Your splits look great to me! epecially since the last bit took you a great deal of effort, you didn't really slow down too much. I am so happy for your experience. Awesome job RAD and it's a remarkable achievement considering where you were a few weeks ago. I was wondering how you were holding up during my long Saturday run; that is, I was hoping you were not getting killed by the heat and your hip was holding up coming down that Canyon. Ogden is a tough course and you did extremely well by keeping an even pace throughout. Happy Recovery!

Chad, it is crazy, I saw SO many people but completely missed you! You did have an excellent race though.

Luz, things are looking better each day - and YES that is why I run! I knew I had the training in to do the marathon, but the last month of relative inactivity had me worried. Help completely reassure me of the saying "the hay is in the barn!" We shouldn't be so worried about resting before a big race. I need to teach myself that more.

Rossy, thanks! Ogden seems to be a bigger mental battle than physical - lots of twists and turns at the end. I was happy to finish upright and am looking forward to UVM!

David, oh the dreaded early morning wake-up for summer racing! The hip is well...okay. Walking almost normal, but still not full strength on flexion of the hip. It'll come...hopefully soon.

Terri, thanks! we need to RUN together sometime. Another trip to the outerbanks may be on the docket :)

You did awesome!!! I was shocked that you were still up so late blogging the night before the race. Maybe you should always do that. Seems like it worked out fine.
